I didn't have any sandpaper handy, but I just scrubbed it really well with the rough side of those dish sponges and it worked like a charm. Glad I found this vide to explain what was happening.
This worked for me using the green rough side of the green and yellow sponge. I scraped the AirTag back and forth for about a minute to scrape off the coating. Thank you and thanks to the uploader!
Outstanding advice, clearly and intelligently delivered - I did exactly as advised, it worked perfectly. Very best AirTag problem solving video out there - very well done.
Genius! My father-in-law called today for help with this exact situation. My immediate reaction was to tell him he probably needed new batteries. But then I quickly jumped on YT, found this video, and walked him through the fix. It worked, he's happy, and he thinks I'm a genius. It's a win all around!
I bought the same Duracells from Costco to replace an Airtag battery last month, and I didn’t even bother to check until today, when I replaced the Airtag battery on my bike. Thanks!
Thanks so much. Worked! I too bought the super pack of Duracell 2032's from Costco. I would never have figured this out! Once again Apple makes a product that does not play well with others!
Genius ! I just saw another video who decided it was a design flaw with the AirTag. If you look at the AirTag you can see that the negative contact is well inside of the insulating black rubber ring. So, as you predicted, something must be covering the negative side of the battery ! BTW, I just used an emory board and cleaned off a section and made sure the cleaned area touched the negative contact in the AirTag. Thank you. I was getting ready to buy six new batteries !!!
Yes, the Duracell CR2032 batteries from Costco now work with this hack. Thank you! I thought the AirTag was defective, so I already replaced it. I now have a spare AirTag ....
Very Nice Video and ‘trick’ for the Duracell Battery though I have no AirTag’s as of yet. I do prefer Duracell, they just seem to last longer in my electronic’s.
I have had success without sandpaper/saliva/solvents by just taking the new coated Duracell 2032, placing it into position, then pressing it down to make contact and rotating the cell until I hear a chirp. Once you get this signal that a good contact has been made, and just put the back on the AirTag without rotating the 2032. That has worked 4 times when randomly placing the battery into position didn't. Saves a lot of time & energy. I can't vouch that this works every time or for every Duracell 2032, but it has for me. If it doesn't, there is always sandpaper which should work every time. Hope that helps.
I had the same problem with two ‘Air Tag’. The first one I ended up throwing the iTag away. After finding your video I gave your solution a try. I have reported this issue to Apple. Must be something to do with the resistance of the contacts.
I will try the same with Maxell and Panasonic batteries I was about to dispose, thank you. Mine made the „happy sound”, but the battery level was still showing almost empty.
i put on some pure alcohol on the back with a cotton swab and cleaned it with that, repeated this a couple times until the coating was gone. Dried it with a simple towel and works like a charm.
I did one easily with just a moistened napkin. The second one required some 240 sandpaper, then had me register it as a new tag. But it finally works. It had lasted 15 months with the original battery. Another site mentions that the battery level was removed by Apple recently because it was unreliable perhaps. I find the warnings inconsistent too, because they come on, then disappear.
Thanks for this - same deal in the vehicle tracker keyfob tags for my campervan.... I phoned the tracker company and they informed me that Duracell 2032s don't work in their tags... Thought I had a big card of useless Duracell 2032s that I just picked up from Costco...
Holy schmoly, it works great! I actually checked the voltage with a VOM and since the battery was 3 Volts I couldn't figure why it wouldn't work in the AirTag... but I put the VOM probes in the MIDDLE (not the outer negative underside of the battery with bittering junk insulating the electrical current. I suspect the ring is at the outside to help prevent electrical current passing thru stomach juices when colocated within 1. inches - clever). Anyway, silly me I had to try licking the battery corner and initially I thought it didn't seem all that bad - just strange... but after 5 seconds or so, indeed I had a foul taste on my tongue! (hope it goes away before it's time for evening libations LOL). BTW, judging by the tiny round silver connector on the bottom, you only need to sand a small identifiable section of the negative battery base (like where 4 digit black stamped number appears, or the + symbol on the positive side), then line up that sanded section to match the tiny round silver connector and you're good to go. Thanks again Jeremy - yo the MAN!😇😎
Duracell changed the side where they put the bitterant on. I recently bought Duracell CR2032 batteries where the bitterant is applied to the positive side. They probably changed it to cope with this problem.
the issue with mine is that i never loose the sound , i followed this video steps but still doest work, again i always have the sound no matter which battery I use and when i replaced still showing the low battery sign that needs to be replaced
Here's an even easier solution - lick your thumb and rub your thumb on the back of the battery. The saliva on your thumb will disolve the bitterant (Back of the battery should look cloudy) just wipe it down and you should be good to go.
So what you’re saying is the Duracell batteries for AirTags are useless because people don’t want to keep an eye on their crotch goblins….. go it. Thanks for this video too 👍🏽
THE MAN IS A GENIUS! SAVED ME MONEY AND TIME WASTED GOING TO HOME DEPOT FOR NEW BATTERIES!
WTH! It worked! Well done! Duracell should include a piece of sandpaper in every pack of Costco batteries.
That would be hilarious
I didn't have any sandpaper handy, but I just scrubbed it really well with the rough side of those dish sponges and it worked like a charm. Glad I found this vide to explain what was happening.
I'm not glad I found this video, but I am very glad Jeremy *made* this video to explain what was happening. Thanks Jeremy
Can confirm abrasive side of sponge worked. I was able to remove the coating just in the spot where the bâtèrent meets the sensor.
did the same and it worked, thank you
This worked for me using the green rough side of the green and yellow sponge. I scraped the AirTag back and forth for about a minute to scrape off the coating. Thank you and thanks to the uploader!

Thank you so much! I didn’t have sandpaper but a nail file did the trick. The only kids I have are the 4 legged ones that I’m using the AirTags for 😂
The MOST useful video on TH-cam.

I can’t believe that really worked thank you.

Thanks for explaining, so simple once you know. I used a nail emery board and it worked great!
YOU-ARE-A-FUCKING-GENIUS . Thank you from Italy , my money didn’t get wasted buying these duracell stuff ! Liked and subscribed
Thanks , have that Costco pack , thought I was going crazy. Yes rubbing alcohol works also.
Works great. I can believe you figured this out
Very Nice Video and ‘trick’ for the Duracell Battery though I have no AirTag’s as of yet. I do prefer Duracell, they just seem to last longer in my electronic’s.
Thank You! People helping people, priceless!
Thank you for this. I’m getting my 240 grit sand paper today!
Hi. Omg! It worked! Thank you sir! Subscribed!❤

Perfect fix! Thank you so much for showing me how to get my Duracell 2032 batteries to work in my AirTags!😊
Thanks for this. I didn’t have a sandpaper and I tried using a medical gauze with rubbing alcohol. It worked.
Simple great video, THANK YOU 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you. Really good advice!
Solved my problem -- thanks for detailed explanation - subscribed

I have reported this issue to Apple. Must be something to do with the resistance of the contacts.
It worked right away! Thanks for sharing!!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Worked like a charm. Didn’t have sandpaper but had a wooden emory board(nail file).
Sanded down and it worked.
I will try the same with Maxell and Panasonic batteries I was about to dispose, thank you. Mine made the „happy sound”, but the battery level was still showing almost empty.
Thank you, man! Your video is the best! Appreciated!
Excellent help!! Appreciated
i put on some pure alcohol on the back with a cotton swab and cleaned it with that, repeated this a couple times until the coating was gone. Dried it with a simple towel and works like a charm.
Rubbing alcohol works to remove that taste strip. Thanks for this video, I couldn't understand why the Duracell batteries weren't working.
I used emory cloth and it worked perfectly, after Goof Off did not! Thank you, Jeremy!
Very helpful. I was about to throw out the AirTag because it wasn’t responding after the new battery
Thanks a lot man. I was about to throw my duracell batts!!
Glad I found this video. I had the exact issue and your solution worked like magic. Thanks
Thanks a lot mate, cheers!

It works just tried it with mine . Just lightly sand it and it works . Good hack thx
Thanks!!! I try what you did and it works!!!🎉
Thanks! Others recommended nail polish remover which didn’t work for me (nor did straight acetone). Back to the hardware store to get some sandpaper.
Worked perfect. Thank You!
Thanks! It works perfect now.
Thank you!! Solved my problem and saved me money!!
it worked, thaaank youu
Thanks very much! Works perfectly after the procedure!

Very useful, tks a lot!!!
Nice hack, i had same issue with 4iiii Power Meter, unresponsive with Duracell

Oh my god! Genius!!!
Thank you, it worked.
Thx, save my life ❤

Saved me some money
Excelente, funciona perfecto, muchas gracias!!!
So dumb to have to do this but it works. Thank you!
thanks for your help
Thank you sir.
Thanks brah!

That’s great to hear.
Mahalo! Worked for me too.
Thank u !
Worked
Sanding didn't work for me but I just rubbed it with hydrogen pyroxide for a few seconds and they worked!
Gracias!! me sirvió con una esponja de lavar platos :).
Legend
it worked
the issue with mine is that i never loose the sound , i followed this video steps but still doest work, again i always have the sound no matter which battery I use and when i replaced still showing the low battery sign that needs to be replaced
Sounds like an issue with the air tag. Contact apple support.
Its Nov 2023, and I just bought airtags that come with Duracell.
It's not just air tag. My clip on tuner doesn't work either.
i got sound once installed but can't connect ? any idea
That’s more of an issue for Apple to solve. Reach out to their support.
Funny. New Costco packages say “ compatible with AIRTAGS” wonder if they were getting lots of complaints.
This should be posted by apple itself
Rubbing alcohol and a kitchen towel did the trick for me
Does alcohol work?
I don’t think so. But you can try it.
I bought so many batteries for my husbands watch and none of them worked, I bet that was as the problem all along😬
Here's an even easier solution - lick your thumb and rub your thumb on the back of the battery. The saliva on your thumb will disolve the bitterant (Back of the battery should look cloudy) just wipe it down and you should be good to go.
That worked perfectly lol
It didn't work for me
I just licked it until the coating was gone
My Duracell worked without the modification??
I was expecting it to be a problem…hmm! I’m not sad
Thank you 🙏🏽 omg!! 😂😂😂😂 duracell sucks 😂😂😂😂
Maybe the genius who did this at Duracell is causing his company a lot of loss.
So what you’re saying is the Duracell batteries for AirTags are useless because people don’t want to keep an eye on their crotch goblins….. go it. Thanks for this video too 👍🏽
u nailed irt bro! scratch it and worked
