Fun fact:
The german scientists that the US "imported" from Germany after WWII, including Von Braun and Arthur Rudolph who developed the Atlas rocket that took the Apollo mission to the moon, made their calculations with the decimal metric system.
Soooo ironically the decimal metric system (and not the imperal sistem) was the one that took the man to the moon.

I think the fascinating part is that's not a high-voltage motor - that's a run of the mill low-voltage DC motor, using the nichrome heating element as a voltage divider

Great review! This works great for Shrink Wrap (I use one in my business but did not test it on SMD- just general shrink wrap) or Shrink Wrapping wires but it seems barely functional for reflow removal of small Surface Mount parts.
I recently tried my Harbor Freight heat gun for SMD and it works fine on low, and I have ordered some nozzles to go on it for more precise control. I found that when hot air spreads out on the surface of a board, you can overheat electrolytic caps and they pop like firecrackers leaving shredded brown paper over the workbench. The high setting can scorch and smoke a PCB where I tried rapid bulk removal of salaged components. I still prefer a 40 watt cheap iron and compressed air for pulling parts.
Yeah, you pop cap and you're picking up brown confetti for months!
The 230V version also has a nice cable, plug and heats pretty good the heat shrink

Hey are you familiar with the shrinking tubes which got solder inside of them? So you can put on the tube and instantly solder two wires. I really like them

I got the same one. It is way better than using a lighter for heat shrink tube.
Funny while watching this I was doing an unboxing of my own, the METERK MK01A happened to be delivered just as I started watching. Man this thing is huge, my Flukes and even my old Micronta are smaller. But I admit it has many more features. I got a case of stick matches when a property management company went out of business. I guess it's small stick matches for the rest of my life! Don't imagine I'll be buying that mini hair dryer, but thanks for showing it off!

I've found the 853d station heat gun works instantly on shrink - the temperature rises as fast as on my soldering iron. It's worth it just for that and can be used for single shots..
Reflow took a little more work ... PCBs are excellent heatsinks and of the nostrils that came with the gun, really only the smallest is capable of breathing out enough heat to be effective and to work fast enough to be useful, I usually crank the temp up to about 420c on a low flow. If it's for only one component - it''s not worth the effort.
If I'm honest I also stole the Iron (the wife's) and have it mounted upside down as my base to keep things toasty. Not needed but on bigger chips it helps a lot, as does a lot of flux. Makes stripping a board for bits worth the work.

Great video but here’s some tips to help u a long the way it’s a great heat gun mine has a blue cap at end of it u can use it on electronics no problems for soldering or unsolding parts but one tip take the plactic tip off one it put me heat out and to it will melt the cap it u hold it to close to your work mine started to melt so I removed it well hoped this helped good luck
The temperature is low because the air flow (and noise...) is high. You would get reflow temperatures by reducing the air flow - preferably by reducing the motor speed, but you might try some sort of “doors” on the air intake side. As it came, it is tuned to heat shrink operations - period.
These are just barely hot enough in a pinch, if you glob some low melting point solder on things first. It'll never be ideal, and it takes a while, so it's definitely a last resort. I do it because I rarely have to remove chips, and don't want a real air gun sitting around.

Do you know about a small air mini gun like this one but that blows just air, not hot air, so i can use it for cleaning.
This looks like a direct knock-off of SparkFun's Heaterizer XL-3000, which is $13.95 for the same specs and comes with lifetime, US-based technical support and decent return policy. For the money (only $1 more), I'd recommend that one. The instructions are also hilarious. I've used it for heat-shrink and to soften 3D-printed parts for clean-up. I haven't tried using it for re-flow, though.
I wonder if that heating element insulation there is made of asbestos.. is sure looks similar to the pics I have seen online.

Id been looking at one of these as a means for cheap reflow but I think I might have a look at something a little better, might be worth it just for heat shrink though.
I use a mini hair straightener I got for $1 for shrink tubing.
Fun fact for you. NASA used the metric system on all the Apollo missions.

Quite noisy, but thats par for the course. BigClive's seems pretty quiet.
What is more impressive than putting a man on the moon? Doing the necessary calculations in Imperial and not have things explode.

What do you call that black thing with four pins?
I was removing SMD components from a board, with this THING and after about +/- half an hour [of on and off use] the metal nozzle end started to melt the plastic around it and the metal nozzle started to dip downward nearly coming in contact with that red plastic “shielding” - this device is for very light usage [no more than 15 minutes at a time] for like shrinking heat tubes and not much else. Just my opinion
You need at least 300° C for reflow.
12 bucks? It is like 3-4 in Indonesia. So that was 8 bucks heat shrink bonus.

This was design for DIY project like packing or something, with heat too low think it may not suitable but hey you can try but I'm not sure how its gonna take the adhesive to melt with this heat gun.
I'm surprised there aren't any mods to this thing to adjust the temp and air flow.

Omg..I have one on my solder station I was considering that for something portable. That was until you turned it on and it made my ears bleed. You should have used a decibel meter rather than the power meter. :D

@@MrTater-gw3px yeah you can make the temperature go higher by restricting airflow. It will be better if you restrict the intake but I suggest a fan speed control..\
These mini heat guns aren't for flowing but shrinking heat shrink wraps and warming up phones to soften the glue to open them rather, if you wants one to reflow there are others that is more expensive

yeah, for the price it's ok. No good to SMD work, but great for heat shrink.

i bought this, turned it on, and it fried itself within ~4 seconds and began smoking, i messaged the seller and they gave me a refund the next day so there's that.
edit: Also the screws on my unit were severely stripped, really weird
edit 2: i opened mine up, @ the factory they left some paper in the unit and it burned up inside and caused it to break. Was a pain to put back together but now it works but I got a free hot air gun, so
Way to void a warranty!!!! Like they are a real warranty! It needs about 50c more temperature! Maybe take out a inch or two of the nichrome! You would be better off with a halogen bulb and blow! Hehe!! Let's not talk about psycho exes! It gives my nightmares!!!! And flashbacks! Sets of my PTSD. She was the trauma and the stress! Man was she crazy! I'm lucky to be here! Keep up the good work. Ran across these on various Chinese sites. Still need hot air reflow, but decided definitely not to buy this. No temperature control. Not even power control. No airflow control. The suspicion that it just won't solder was easily confirmed elsewhere.
Thing is, if you know anything about hot air stations, these inexpensive Chinese ones right around $50 or integrated with soldering stations, you know that you often need to keep them at super low airflow. For two reasons, for one, at even 700-800W, they have trouble reaching soldering temperature, and they have a better chance at low airflow, and for other, when you're mass desoldering, you won't care, but sometimes you'd REALLY REALLY appreciate not blowing all the little capacitors and resistors away. So this will fail on both accounts. 300W going wfull blast is just bad.
Heatshrink? I have butane jet lighters. If i need to shrink it gently and slowly, my hair dryer will do. It has lots more power.
If you want to play around with it, do you think a bit of diode modding could make it go slower on the fan without combusting the thing?
