I'm pleased with the added intensity with which Great Britain have brought to this second test, it was unmitigated hostility that lost them the first test. The focus and calm is evidenced by their discipline in general play. Fatty vautin played with the keenness of youth, gene miles always good going forward providing the backs with room and options and meninga was rather quiet really, but I love the nostalgia, thanks for the upload 😅
If the Poms had played football instead of trying to physically bash the Australian's, it might have been closer than 18-6. They might have even won, who knows??
A lot of people only remember the funny or idiot Fatty from The Footy Show and from his long time Ch.9 commentary. But I can assure you that Manly and Queensland fans definitely appreciated his skills. He could run, pass, kick and he was a demon tackler. For a back rower there wasn't much of him. 176 cm (5'9") and only 90 kg (14 st 2 lb), but all of that was heart.
Apparently Paul Vautin was given the nickname Fatty out of pure chance. After he signed with Manly prior to 1979, Ken Arthurson was taking him on a tour of the club and as they were walking through the gym, there were club legends Fred Jones and Graham Eadie in there talking. Apparently Jones asked Wombat who the fatty was, and it stuck as Vautin's life long nickname.
When this GB side came to us in NZ we never saw them really play like this though we saw Ellery's brilliance. They are good, better than they showed us. What a pity, We did beat this Aussie side in 83 and we used basically the same team to roll this GB side 3 nil. 42 min 2 half there's that GB side I remember. Jack called it from the start no one backing up
Very interesting how deep their backline is in attack which seems to allow them to break Australia's line somewhat easier that a flat line approach. I'd love to see this come back to league and the scum where the hookers need to strike for the ball skills lost to todays touch footy approach.
Agreed, Jake friend was probably the last of this ilk of hookers, if the team could adjust to this in recent years the game would prosper, because you are right, it's become a touch football game, the forwards going forward, the backs going back, the halves determining plays from the ruck and scrum, perhaps we could petition for it's application into this modern version of footy eh?!?
Yeh .. in both tests they tried to take hid head off .. ref was as weak as.. not sending them off.. definitely had his money on the Poms in both games.

Pommy always where bad losers, poor old wally no wonder he has bad memory lose now 40 years on

That ref was as weak as piss.. both those players who tried to take Wallies head off should have been sent off .. he was a terrible ref.
the ref made G.B. look better than they were the no 11 should have been sent off for the elbow to wally's head
look again at the replay...Keith Reign swung and connected, he was the right one to go off see the Gibson replays at half time.
