  • First - sorry for the poor quality of video! This was an experimental setup for a freshwater sump. The goal was to filter the water through a reverse under-gravel system in the sump, which would provide nutrients to the roots of plants. This was supposed to act as a replacement for expensive substrate. It "worked" and grew plants quickly, but the larger tank should have been setup with more bio-load and less or no plants at all and the sump would need to be larger. The plants in the sump outgrew the small area pretty quickly and were replanted into a 110 gallon tank using Turface as the substrate. A video of the 110g using this substrate, the PPS Pro dosing method, and a DIY powerhead CO2 diffusor coming soon, as it's yielded great results over the last few months. The plans for the experiment in this video, shown at the beginning, can be seen with better quality on the project page: www.aquaticopia.com/projects/p...

Because bubbles gradually accumulate that can eventually break the siphon, and also to prime it, I drilled a small hole and fitted a safety check valve (one-way/used for air pumps). Attached is airline hose and a walgreens syringe so that I can suck the air out without using my mouth! Best of luck and hope that made sense!

Ohhh man you're gonna laugh so much! I thought you did some kind of suction valve with a syringe. After all it was just a syringe hanging in there, and you just use it whenever u wanna prime. You made me think of different ways to make a valve, I even got a nice design for a pvc + syringe + power drink rubber lids (those that you can suck, but no liquid will come out) + dual DIY internal valves. I will post a vid, you will laugh, cuz you inspired me to do this hahaha thanks a lot man really ^_^

I really like the fact you explained the results of this kind of sump. Now I know what I should do and what I shouldn't. I have a question though, I saw this syringe glued on a PVC, thats some kind of suction valve to start the siphon, right? can you please explain how to make it?

How did the planted tank turn out? Did it work good?
    Any plants you'd recommend?
