One of the best songs ever. U2 performed at the Superbowl immediately after 9/11 and when they did this song they had a tall screen that scrolled all of the people that died that day. It was sad and hopeful and beautiful all at once.
The same show they provided at the super bowl they also did at the very first concert that they played at Madison square Garden after 9/11 happened and it was chilling to see the name scrolled up that white silk in the center of the arena being so close to where it happened I will never forget it.

U2 is an undisputed top five bands of all time. Their musical journey is profound, and, like the Beatles, they have changed with several phases.
The Joshua Tree album was a love letter to America. I will always adore U2 for trying to remind us of how great America could be, of love, and unity. I sometimes thought their vision of our country was naive, but these men came from their own deadly division in their country of Ireland. They were not just rock stars, they were messengers. They studied history. Devoured it. MLK, Malcolm X, Billie Holiday, JFK, religion, civil rights, slavery, etc. All of that, and more, is in their music. I remember knowing some hits in the 80s and finally buying the entire Joshua Tree album. It filled me with hope, the desire for a more spiritual life, activism, and a renewed love for history and my own country. I even started visiting the desert more, which I still do to this day. It also reminded me of human ugliness and war. It haunts me to this day. It is a sacred album that is absolutely TIMELESS. Americana from the perspective of some SERIOUS Irish men. Great reaction and commentary! :)

U2 had been working towards their big break through from the early 80's. They had made a huge impression with their Live Aid performance, two years before The Joshua Tree was released. Expectations were high...and they delivered.

Now we're talking my favorite! The best way to hear U2 is to hear them live. They are one of the few bands that actually sound better live. I would suggest reacting to U2 live from Sydney. For this song, a very moving performance is the Super Bowl halftime show after 9/11. For someone that has lived through the trauma of 9/11 this was a very moving performance.
I saw them in concert on the Joshua Tree tour at ASU stadium. BON JOVI opened for them. One of the most Iconic concerts EVER. I was 18.
This song has religious elements ,is on the Joshua Tree album ,one the ten greatest rock albums of all time surely. The live version is even better ,to witness the crowd ,the emotion .. Sometimes he starts with "All I'll want is you "and that links into this song at concerts.

I was in downtown L.A. that day. I was on the north side by Union Station, so I didn't see them, but I could hear them. By the time I learned it was actually the band playing it was too late to try to get down to 7th. Crowds were fking crazy. That corner is skid row. When those cluless radio jocks talk about it not being one of the best neighborhoods, that's code for it's poor and black. To amplify their cluelessness, U2 picked that location just because of that. Bono has always been a humanist and an activist The song is a protest against the divisions in society, and a longing for a place where we aren't divied by race, class, religeon etc... 'where the streets have no names'. The radio jocks obviously didn't get the meaning of the song or the reason for that location. From Wiki: "The lyrics were inspired by a story that Bono heard about Belfast, Northern Ireland, where a person's religion and income were evident by the street on which they lived. He contrasted this with the anonymity he felt when visiting Ethiopia, saying: "the guy in the song recognizes this contrast and thinks about a world where there aren't such divisions, a place where the streets have no name. To me, that's the way a great rock 'n' roll concert should be: a place where everyone comes together... Maybe that's the dream of all art: to break down the barriers and the divisions between people and touch upon the things that matter the most to us all." Bono wrote the lyrics while on a humanitarian visit to Ethiopia with his wife, Ali; he first wrote them down on an airsickness bag while staying in a village."

Guys this is one of my favorite bands of all times … you guys need to check out the Beatles doing their concert from the rooftop Dont Let Me Down is a great song they played almost a full hour on the rooftop the whole thing is worth watching
The background to this song is The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1970s & 1980s. The conflict was primarily along religious divisions, Protestant/Unionist vs Catholic/Republican (its a long and sorry story) which led to the city of Belfast being segregated with walls to separate the warring communities. The mere mention of the name of the street that you lived on would identify you as either Catholic or Protestant. U2 wanted to tear down the walls and live in peace where the name of your street wouldn't get you killed.

To get a true appreciation for U2, do live versions whenever possible.
This was a very turbulent period in LA that saw a lot of bad stuff go down. Police were on alert at the best of times, so when the hottest band on the planet (in 1987) decided to set up a video shoot in a shady area of LA, it kind of pushed things beyond what they thought they could handle. The great thing is how they defied the police and pushed forward to record the video anyway. One of the most interesting videos, imo.
U2 did this as a tribute to The Beatles legendary rooftop concert from 1969, the last time The Beatles ever performed live in public. As with everything else, The Beatles did it first. And the cops really shut The Beatles down; it wasn't just put on like this video was. U2 wasn't actually playing on this vid; it's just for show, but The Beatles really played a show on the roof of their London recording studio. There are some great videos of that concert on youtube. They did 'Get Back' (a Paul McCartney song), 'Don't Let Me Down' (a John Lennon song) and several others. Hope you get a chance to check some of them out. The premise of the song is that we want to be somewhere that you're not judged by the street (neighborhood/section of town) you live in.... equal.....it is probably their greatest live in concert song. EPIC
The Beatles, U2, and The Red Hot Chili Peppers played the on rooftops to record videos. It would be great for another band to do this again to help the atmosphere. Music could help greatly!!!

Their Super Bowl halftime performance after 9/11 is phenomenal and very emotional. They performed for the reopening of the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina as well. Green Day joins them for the song The Saints Are Coming that brings the house down. They have many great songs spread out over decades. In fact, they are the only band to have a number one album in FOUR different decades (80's, 90's, 00's, 10's) and I believe they still hold the record for the most Grammy awards.

One of my favourite music videos of all time. It captures a beautiful moment in time, and when you watch the video, it feels like it’s happening for the first time all over again. Love.
The lead singer for U2 got the idea to do this from The Beatles, They did this on the roof of the Abby Road Studios in 1969.
This was the Joshua Tree tour in the 80's. They did the same thing at a park in San Francisco the week before. I was at that concert. Their concerts are more than entertainment. They part political statements and other things. They are an event. Considering they came from war torn Ireland it makes sense. They did a lot of work for equal rights for minorities and women. Also awesome music. They pushed the envelope of what music bands do.
Another killer rooftop performance was The Beatles on top of the Abbey Road Studios in London / UK. History was made on that day with Get Back and Don’t Let Me Down. If ever you get a chance…
Everyone must watch GET BACK the documentary Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) put together from previous footage about the lead up to this amazing performance. It's 3 parts but if it was one big movie, it would have been my favorite of last year.
Although I grew up with this U2 video, but it pales in comparison to the Beatles' rooftop performance.

I was in High School in 1985. They were just starting to blow up the charts with the album, Joshua Tree. My boys got tix to Soldier Field and made a Road Trip. Top 5 concert in my entire life!
48 yrs old and I still agree with the woman. You do what you got to do for Rock. U2's producer just had to keep the Cops busy long enough to get the video made. He done his job.

This is one of the songs that immediately takes me back to growing up in the 80s. It never gets old, even thinking about the meaning today.
I was there! One of the greatest days of my life! Playing on the roof was a homage to the Beatles when they played on the roof. And now so many artist play on the roof. The Beatles were the seed to performances like this.

It was March 1981 and I found myself alone in Philadelphia. So many years have passed since that day, I really don't recall why I was in Philly, nor do I remember why I was by myself.
Since at that time, I did know a lot of people living throughout the city and also had some relatives in South Philly. I was probably there visiting a loved one. Sorry, but that day is a total blur. However, I remember that night like it happened yesterday.
I wanted a few beers and a bite too eat so I parked my car and walked into this very cool hot spot, called the
"Bijou Cafe".
At that time, the Bijou was the type of place where you could hear some very good "up and coming" rock bands, wile having a drink or 2 and maybe meet some new people in a relaxed, comfortable, intimate setting.
Some jazz legends like, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and John Coltrane played there years prior when the Bijou was a jazz club.
Along with musicians or bands that were "green" or inexperienced when it came too touring or playing for a live audience, the Bijou was the perfect venue for them to hone their skills and gain experience. It was also a real treat for the people in attendance because of the sound quality and intimacy of the place.
I cruised on in, sat on a stool at the bar, ordered a drink and then started getting comfy. I don't recall purchasing any sort of ticket WHATSOEVER for admission.
"I will have 2 or 3 drinks, grab a bite, then head on home"
Yup, that's what I told myself. It took me years of failure to finally realize that this game plan never works for me.
As my drink arrived, I noticed a bands equipment was being set up on the stage.
"Cool, hear a couple of tunes wile I'm hanging out."
As I was scanning over and checking out the approximate 175 people in attendance, I noticed a very attractive, petite, blue eyed, blonde haired women sitting 2 stools from me. After introducing myself and throwing out all the charm, charisma and comedy I could muster, it was soon very apparent that we clicked big time.
She was interesting, funny, smart, energetic and oh so damn cute. It was very hard for me not too stare at her perfect features.
The real incredible feeling was, she felt the same about me.
No she she was not blind nor deaf.
The 2 of us were on the same "vibe" and connected immediately. It felt so natural, so very real, and so easy too hold onto each other's gaze, share a gentle caress, laugh together, and enjoy every word of our conversation.
To say we were "off in another world" would suffice.
The only thing that brought Blondie and I out of our exciting flirtatious world was when we both realized the band was now starting their 3rd song.
Never heard the MC announcing the bands name, nor have any recollection of hearing the first 2 songs of the set.
We decided to give them a listen.
It was clear and obvious too me after a few songs that these 4 guys were good.
VERY GOOD!
A talented bunch, that appeared to be somewhat experienced and totally in their element up on that stage. They sounded, played and even looked tremendously professional and poised beyond any "rookie band". Just a real cool looking group.
It was about at this time that I noticed my bar stool, with me on it, was now facing the band just 75 feet from me and concentrating on them instead of my new, best, female friend.
They played maybe 15 songs in total, sounding powerful, clean and oh so tight during the set. Their music had a "fresh" new not dated feel for 1981.
During their 2 song encore, I was now practically standing on the stage as the 5th member of the band.
I have no recollection of leaving my barstool or that gorgeous girl behind.
When the music finally stopped, the 4 of them soaked in the steady crescendo of the ovation. A long, steady, rousing and raucous clapping, from a satisfied audience of about 175 people.
I shook all 4 band members hands when they left the stage and simply said "Thank you".
All 4 performers were wide-eyed, smiling and appreciative.
I have often wondered whatever became of that blonde haired beauty I had such a good time with, all those many years ago.
I know what became of the band I saw that magical night......

U2 was on top of the world in 1987. Their run of albums from War through Achtung Baby was about the best run that any band has had.
In God's Country is another great song by U2.

They did this on skid row next to the Cecil Hotel, the most infamous "haunted" hotel in the US during their tour when they were the number one band in the world. Do a bit of research and you'll find out how amazing this was.

That album Joshua Tree had so many crazy good hits, it's literally one of those "desert island" albums for me, right up there with Beatles Blue album (yeah Blue I said it, not White not red haha) for me.
The hotel right beside them is where the Richard Ramirez stayed. Also known as the Night Stalker, the notorious serial killer stayed at the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles for a time, which has a dark and sordid history.

That was the 80's and 90's man, in a lot of ways it was so much better. Bands would do that kind of thing sometimes, just randomly perform on roof tops in odd locations, on Wall Street on the steps of the stock exchange, etc. There's no danger or soul in music anymore.
U2 is the story of my life..seen them 49 times in concert since 1987..ONE IS MY WEDDING SONG.

I've never been a much of fan of U2. My jam is The Beatles and classic 70's rock and some New Wave. However, I do love this particular U2 song so much that its easily in my top 5 faves from the 1980's. Also the music video is among my top 80's favorites as well. Their other popular tune, "I still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" from the same album is also very good, but back in the 80's the radio played it so often that it made me dislike the song. Their other earlier tune, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is another one that I like.
One thing notable about this music video is that is shows Bono without his trademark sunglasses, while the rest of the band are all wearing shades. U2, the biggest band in the world? No. But they can be the best Irish band in the World. Next to the Irish singer, Imelda May.
In most cities, the poorer neighborhood's streets have numbers rather than names which is why they chose that specific location.

7th and Main in LA in the 1980s was right in the middle of the Hood. So U2 definitely was trying to unite people from different races....Where the Streets Have No Name is a reference to Heaven and U2 are very religious Catholics so wanted to put out the message of peace through Christ

This is how we got our information back in the day the radio. This was a big deal...
It is a great video and the whole setting performing on top of a building gives it something unique and special. They have been around for 4 decades and made magnificent work. Their life performances are extremely good and filled with passion. I prefer the life version sometimes over the studio version: less polished and more raw emotion.
An integral part of their songs is their lyrics: beautifully written with a strong message. So I warmly suggest that taking in the lyrics as part of the experience (before, during or after). It will enrich your experience I think :-)

The video is taken from what the BEATLES did thirty years earlier and more successful at it. Beatles were unrehearsed, last time live, tinny speakers, on a cold London day. The U2 video was leaked intentionally to the radio to get a crowd, etc. Great song, but nothing like the original BEATLES.
