I watched a video the other day where you talked about waiting for a duck to pose a certain way, and you learned it's behaviour to get a better shot. I went straight down the park, studied the ducks, and noticed they bobbed 3 or 4 times, before flapping their wings to dry off. Same every time. Before now I thought it was just by chance. You've helped me pay more attention to the little things to get better photos (and enjoy nature). Thanks, Simon.

@@simon_dentremont In one of your earlier videos I think you mentioned birds pooping just before taking off, which is something I had noticed a few times before and it was really nice to have someone experienced confirm I wasn't just imagining it. It definitely made me take note of your channel since it showed that you have both knowledge and a sense of humor to share.

animals are creatures of habit just as much as we are, I have a family of foxes that just moved in under a boulder in my yard, and before mom leaves she pokes her head out and backs off a second later she will do this 3or 4 times before she comes out to bask in the sun, I have a good 3 or 400 photos of her and the kits and as long as I don't move she will stay there but if I move shes gone till night fall.

I know it was just and ad, but buying/selling used gear is how photography flourishes. It gives a nice price point for beginners, and a good used lens is every bit as good as a brand new one.
I'm a beginner and I have been shooting on a nikon D7000 with a 300mm f4 AF lens. Its not a perfect set up by modern standards, but It gets me out taking wildlife photos. That has been invaluable to me. I appreciate those people willing to keep their stuff in good shape and reselling them as they upgrade their gear.

I couldn’t agree more, but just be careful when buying used gear with MPB. They sometimes charge more that the retail price. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve bought a lot of gear there, but not all of their deals are great.

It's also a hobby were equipment is fairly well maintained as a whole by most users. Beaten up equipment is very apparent, but it's definitely how I've been able to stay in digital and film photography.

There are not many people who would give a Master Class in photography for free. This is one of those videos. Every tip will lead to getting better photos. A lot of these tips are borne from years of experience. You have a very unique style Simon. Somehow you are able to impart vasts amount of knowledge in a relatively short video, but in a way that is very easy to understand whilst not feeling rushed. I have been taking photographs for many years but your advice on back button focus.....absolute game changer for AI Servo on moving subjects. It does not matter what skill level you are....this channel will and does make you a better photographer.

Your videos have amazing production values - we really appreciate all the time you put in to sharing your knowledge with us. Thanks so much. Again!

When I was thinking "Hey, maybe I'd like to take up photography beyond point-and-shoot with my phone", I ended up with a bridge camera on precisely the logic of getting my feet wet in the practice without going all-in, budget-wise. I really wasn't comfortable at the time spending more than $1000 on a new hobby, and I honestly have not regretted that decision at all; I'm learning a ton and I figure I've still got at least a few years' worth of learning with the camera I bought before I start really wanting to level up into a nice new camera body with interchangeable lenses. I don't claim that a bridge camera is the way to go for every beginner, but it certainly is working for me, as I'm having the time of my life with it! (When I can shoot, that is. This year is not off to a great start, as far as that goes, but things pass.)
One suggestion: for a setting in which to practice pure technique of shooting animals in action, you can't do better than a dog park, especially a fenced-in one with lots of room. I've done a LOT of practice with auto-focus and shutter-speed at a local dog park that's several acres large!

Another Great video Simon. I went from being a professional portrait photographer and putting that aside to becoming an award-winning wildlife photographer. I have to say through the years of watching TH-cam that yours not only has been the most valuable channel to watch. Also enjoyable as I love your personality. But also, inspired me to help people. I have a teacher background and as hard as it is at times working 2 jobs. Im trying to get out at least one video a week to help new photographers. This is a beautiful and seldom overlooked field. But I must say Wildlife photography has been one of the greatest things to come into my life. Just being out in nature again. I won't hold you up I just want to say thank you for all the great videos

Nice low angle, too, they look like dinosaurs

Love this, especially the fact you recommend newer people getting APS-C or micro 4/3, so many professional wildlife people forget how expensive photography is! personally I started with a second hand canon rebel t7/2000d/1500d(depending on country) and 75-300mm mkiii (the cheap non IS version) for about AU$600/US$400, within a year I was hooked on wildlife and upgraded to an r7+18-150 and 100-400mm while it was on sale for about AU$3300/US$2200, which is an amazing rig for newer people, sure theres a few autofocus issues because they jammed the r3/r5 autofocus system in a (probably) untested APS-C body but I have gotten some amazing shots and the crop factor saves so much money on longer lenses. Though I cant wait to get the 200-800 and have effectively 320-1240mm range, its going to be tough to ever swap to full frame when its near impossible to have the same reach unless your camera lives with a 1.4x converter stuck to it, or you're willing to pay 30k for the 1200mm f5.6 😅

I'm not really a beginner but I am an amateur/hobbyist and this video was so interesting and informative, and even though I knew some of it, there is always more to learn or to refresh your knowledge. I have already used MPB in the UK a few times and in fact I had a lens collected by their courier this very day, for them to assess and maybe buy. They are great to deal with and they make the whole process so easy. Pricing is on a level with other places I have used that deal in used photography items, and if MPB think you have 'under'graded your item they will tell you and pay you a bit more than the original quote!

Canons lens is expensive and heavy.I'm a stroke patient , my left side is still affected, so my options would have been 75-300 or Tamron 100-400. The 150-600 I didn't think I could manage one handed. Your article helped me decide more or less 😊

Wildlife photography has always been my passion! I used a Canon PowerShot sx740 for the longest time and have just jumped into the deep end with the Sony 𝛂7r5 and the 200-600. I'm still battling the learning curve with this thing, but I'm excited for spring (rural ontario outside of Ottawa)
The most helpful thing I discovered for wildlife, which you mentioned, especially for mammals, is time of day! For spring and summer, you want to be out there near sunrise! Ridiculously early.... 4:45am, alone, sneakers and silent clothes
Ps, I love that deer in the snow clip that you use here and there on your videos! Stunning spellbinding....what a vibe

An Eastern gray squirrel managed to die in my backyard last winter. I wasn't in the mood to remove it to the garbage so there it lay for a couple of hours, beside a pink dogwood. Suddenly a very large brown wing appeared on the other side of the dogwood. The bird jumped a bit brining it fully into view. Big white head, powerful yellow bill, a bald eagle. It tuned its head to determine the squirrel was available for the plucking and off it went. Closest I've come to a bald eagle in my living room.

I almost skipped this episode thinking that a "super-amateur" level photographer like myself wouldn't gain anything new from it. Thanks for always proving me wrong, Simon!

Great advice, including the need to be mindful. I once had a Barred Owl fly 5 ft. over my head across the trail, landing in a nearby tree. Being mindful of her comfort zone, I inched slowly closer and allowed myself 25 unforgetable minutes watching her groom, including tucking her head beneath a wing. My favourite shot was when it appeared as though she unzipped her outer feather sweater revealing her tawny chest.

Great timing. I went out shooting with my new Sony 200-600 for the first time today and got some great shots of the local wildlife. While landscapes are my primary passion some of my favourite images were taken of birds and other wildlife with longer lenses. As someone coming from Fuji (APS-C) the 100-400 is amazing for the cost / weight. While I have yet to get experienced with the equivalent Sony 200-600 I have noticed the extra weight and slower motors / OIS (assume due to larger elements). If I could afford to keep two systems I would likely have either MFT or APS-C for wildlife and keep the A7R for landscapes 😊

I have loved photography for a long time but only recently started getting into wildlife photography. I have a nikon coolpix p600 my mother offered me for my birthday in 2015, which is not ideal for wildlife photography but I still learn on it. I don't have enough money to buy new equipment, but I can’t wait for the time when I'll do. Hopefully by then my skills will have improved enough that the equipment won’t be wasted. Thank you very much for your advices!

Great tips again, Simon! I’m still at the learning stage myself. I have a couple of spots where some very interesting birds congregate and I’ve figured out their patterns. Now my big challenge is getting out earlier. That’s the toughest problem for me.

I just recently got interested in photography kind of backward. 1st, I got a nicer printer. Then I experimented with real photo paper and was able to do some pleasing enough photos from my catalog of cell phonne photos. And just like that, I'm a photographer!!! 😆 😅😂 🤔 😪 😵‍💫
Sorry for the messy string of emojis but that is kinda the process I went through discovering that yes, I can do photography but, I really have no idea how to achieve what I am after.
Your channel has been a great eye opener and encouragement.
I really appreciate your desire to genuinely help and educate those of us that are absolute beginners, as well as your perhaps mis-guided more veteran type photographers as well.
I think I appreciate most that you are encouraging and do not speak down to your audience.
    Thank You very much!

Hey Simon, I wanted tell you that I just received a Sigma 150-600mm lens from MPB that I ordered after watching this video. I had recently purchased a 100-500mm Sigma lens from Adorama and ended up returning it because the listing online and photos said and showed it as having Optical Stabilization, but the unit I received did not. I had to call them to get the return approval and call them again after they failed to cover the shipping costs. Very frustrating. I had no issues with MPB. The unit was exactly as advertised and works great! So glad you included this ad. Weird thing to say, but there it is. Keep up the great work, your videos are fantastic!

As usual, a video packed with information diamonds. Regarding positioning upwind of aquatic birds in anticipation of taking off into wind. it occurs to me that their apparent movement and speed will be less making tracking easier.
Also I plan to make many repeat visits to my local country park to practice on very common species. I think it was yourself who advised 'a great image of the commonplace is far better than a poor image of the rare' (I paraphrase).
Many thanks for your continued valuable videos. Best wishes.

I know you're joking about not seeing a Bald Eagle in my living room but I would add the advice that being ready to catch something in your yard or a local park where you're spending time anyways is a good idea, have your camera ready to hand! Early on when I got into bird photography I tried chasing all over the county where I live and the first great shots of a Red-tailed Hawk I got were literally in my own backyard. I live near my city's downtown but nevertheless in addition to Red-tailed Hawks I have had Cooper's Hawks and Great Horned Owls visit my yard. Great Blue Herons and Osprey have flown over my house and once even a Peregrine Falcon flew high overhead! It wasn't the best picture ever but I wouldn't have even been able to identify it if I hadn't taken a photo and zoomed in.
I've gotten used to listening for squirrels or crows giving their alarm calls and that usually means if I pop outside there will be a hawk sitting in a tree nearby. As an added bonus the amount if garden and house pests in the area has gone down.
On the other hand there was recently a sighting of a leucistic Red-tailed Hawk about an hour away and I'm debating whether it's worth driving that far to try to photograph it. I've never tried to find a specific individual bird before. I was thinking I might call Cornell's lab of Ornithology for advice.

I started with a Canon 2000D, and a Tamron 70-300. Not the best objective ever (far from there), but for 100€ new, it's a great one for starting. Since then, I greatly upgraded my equipment, but still this Tamron is what I took with me last year when I went to the unsafe San Francisco.
