Sadly only 3 out of 7 Turbines are operational. Hirakud dam currently generates less than half of it's installed capacity

Our family didn't get any compensations and were forcibly driven out of valley fearing water release.

Hirakud is the longest earthen Dam (composite structure of earth, concrete, and masonry)in the world and stands across the mighty river, Mahanadi, in the Sambalpur region of Odisha. It was the first major multipurpose river valley project after India's Independence in 1947.Pride of Odisha.❤
I salute the labourers those who without any basic saftey equipments made this impossible thing possible. It shievers me to think of those men and women who were climbing the ladders and roaming around bare feet.

This video is so beautifully presented. As said by late Jawharlal nehuru hirakud is indeed one of the temples of 20th century India, an epitome of brilliance of our engineers and hardwork of our people.

My ancestors were some of the local residents whose homes got completely submerged due to the Hirakud dam. We never got any compensation/alternate settlement, despite running from pillar to post... There was a time when my grandfather couldn't afford 2 square meals a day.
On one side, there's the contribution of Hirakud towards the general prosperity of the state and nation yet on the other side is my personal grief associated with it... So, yeah, I've mixed feelings about this monument of modern infrastructure of post-independence India.
That's true. after 1956 many people were not paid compensation for uprooting. Sorry for your family sufferings.

I have asked some people in Odisha and out side Odisha, they said it was done by foreign talent and also they have given the credit to foreigners....then I told buddy this was constructed & managed by our own Indian engineers & common people... they laughed at me.....now I am thinking how this great project is underrated by Indian history as well as our schooling system...
Hirakud dam is work of British government but Indian government take the credit.
Today's also our Indian could not able to build the statue of unity so they asked help of China.

@@pareshbag7114 Statue of Unity was not built by Chinese....this was completely managed by L&T. Only problem with that we don't have bronze panels...that casting is available in china for that we took support from Chinese.

many villages and old temples submerged after the reservoir filled up. my great grandfather had 15 acres of land, he was given 150 rupees 10 rupees for an acre at that time. he came n build a home in sambalpur.
