Add Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico to the list that has an arch of triumph. This is arch is called Arco Triunfal de la Calzada de los Héroes. The arch is topped with a bronze lion signifying the strength and pride of the people of Leon.
Something I found interesting at the DMZ was the cross border traffic. To my best recollection our guide said that there was some sort of special economic zone near the border in North Korea. North Korean labour has competitive wages, which is attractive to some sorts of manufacture. So parts, or what not, would be shipped north for assembly and finished goods back south for sales.

People don't smile in Russia because it is the culture. There are many countries in Europe too that don't smile. Smiling randomly is seen as nefarious and makes it seem as though you are either mocking someone or have cruel intentions. In all honesty, people in the US smiling all the time is uncomfortable. There are differences in culture you know, there is no need to extrapolate false conclusions from a simple difference in culture.
You gotta react to this same guy but for my country, Spain! Great videos he does. In the case of the Spain video it’s the best I’ve seen explaining my country to foreigners. I read a book by Yeonmi Park about her escape from North Korea, her horrible time in China and her arrival in South Korea. I really recommend it, it’s not a fun book to read, but it’s an incredible book to read.

I recommend watching Crash Landing on You (south korean tv series). Even though it's a rom com, the better part of the series takes part in north korea and the script, set design and so forth was done with the help of north korean defectors. It got good praise for being pretty accurate with its depictions of north korean life
A viewpoint that I find particualarly eye-opening is that of N. Korean defectors, mostly in S. Korea or U.S. Two YT channels that often feature interviews with these people are Dimple (mostly NK) and Asian Boss, which has many such among their more general content. As for arches des triomphes, the word & concept "triumph" is a Roman invention, and referred to a mass public celebration of a military leader following an important victory. They date back to the Republic, but were especially important during the Empire. Many Roman arches were actually built on the conquered territory rather than in Rome itself. Only (long?) after the fall of Rome did other cultures begin to imitate the archtectural structure as a military commemoration, but generally with some local substitute for the Roman-style triumphal ceremonies.

Regarding triumphal arches, I don't think it necessarily has to do with something war-related or France. There is one in the Austrian city of Innsbruck, located in the city center. It was built in 1774 to commemorate the wedding of archduke Leopold of Habsburg (Austria) and the Spanish princess Maria Ludovica. Maybe the arch is a general symbol of victory?!
There's a triumphal arch in London too: Marble Arch, and one could argue that the Brandenburg Gate is one too. Yes, I know it says "gate", but look at the thing! It's not gating anything and has them horsies at the top!
It was built as a toll gate, then rebuilt as a "really impressive" toll gate, then Napoleon took the horsies away and only when he was defeated it became a triumphal arch. For a brief time it was a border crossing, and then it was walled off. Now it symbolises the triumph of the removal of both wall and border i guess. (but it is hideously cramped in between the buildings next to it, so the wall is still there too )
When I migrated to Belgium (I'm dutch), every classroom had a depiction of the king and queen of Belgium, next to a crucified Jesus above the chalk board. That was in 1985. Coming from a very liberal country, that seemed pretty surreal to me. Separation of state and religion existed, but a lot of schools are (were?) mostly raised by churches here.
I agree with what you said about doubting everything said about pro north korea speakers, but shouldnt the same be said about some north korea defectors? Some of them get paid a lot of money to talk about how bad the country is, so much so that its the only job they have, sometimes telling absolutely insane stories just to attract an audience. I recommend checking a documentary called Loyal citizens of Pyongyang, where they talk about north koreans in south korea. Also i think understing the korean war is also important, from how they see it, it was a civil war/revolution, internal politics. Until countries from outside started sticking their noses in.
Fun Fact: the only two times the North Korean national football team participated in the World Cup they lost to Portugal. The first time was in 1966 (England), when they lost 5-3 after being up 0-3, due to the stellar performance and hat-trick of Eusébio, and the second time was in 2010 (South Africa), when they lost 7-1. 🙂
Some points that are nice to be aware and think about when criticizing the 'authoritarian regime' that they have there: "They can''t acces TH-cam": They are technically at war, and the US stand with the other side. Other than that, they suffer from a lot of economic blockades. But specifically about TH-cam, they probly could have it if TH-cam agreed to theirs terms of what content can be allowed there... as they do agree with all other countris they are in. "Its a dinasty": Their constituiton is public on the internet and they they have democratic elections. You can of course think it is strange that the same family keeps winning it, but they do have it. Also, UK literally has a monarchy till this day, a constitutional one but i mean... * It is nice to read about the people participation on their pollitical system there, they have far more say on stuff than most other coutries. "They have pictures of their former presidents at schools": Well we have those here on brazil, pictures of the current mayor mostly. Also... Mount Rushmore... that was built on top of a sacred mountain for the natives... "You can' travel to NK without government permition": Can you travel to any country without government permition? "They have approved hairstyles": Pretty sure that is just fake. "Religious literature": They have a lot of christian churches there just check on google maps. See if that is prohibited on their constituition. * Actually he says it does not prohibit it but that it is limited, based on... i guess he just knows that... "It is a closed country": They also have lots of foreign embassys there, more than some other countryes... "Oh they have lots of bombs": Still at war and gets threatened by the US a lot, sometimes they use its military force to get basic trading going on without getting smashed by some kind of blockade. Don't get me wrong they do have lots of limitations, from water to food to acces to some basic stuff. But they are not the evil North Korea either. The geography now videos are biased A LOT. They did it on the Brazil's video too, they even say that the deforestation of the amazon rainforest is to grow more food when that is just not true, most of our soil is used to plant commodities, that we do not eat and most of it gets exported (That is true for the meat production too, it just gets exported). One great video about North Korea is the 'We Went To North Korea To Get A Haircut' one by the channel BoyBoy. They just go there and film it and get a nice haircut. That's it, liked your reactions a lot.
If you want to see more of North Korea check out the UK;s channel 5 TV series Michael Palin In North Korea. Michael was part of the Monty Python team and now does a lot of travel shows.
Alejandro Cao de Benós (the only non-korean to ever work for the North Korean government) has done many interviews in spanish, even 1 hour podcasts, in wich he has said things like "There won't be a world without North Korea" or "If the US shows any level of agression against Korea we will instantly drop thermonuclear bombs in their main cities", he has also explained that even after 2 decades of serving the North Korean government he still can't live inside the country because they believe his job should be outside, so he lived around the world, mainly in Spain, until recently when he was declared as wanted by the FBI for "Conspiracy to violate the international emergency economic powers", basically he provided illegal services of blockchain and crypto currencies to the North Korean government. After this he disappeared and about 1 month later he twitted that he didn't understand why everyone was searching him, he was just eating falafel in Israel, even after trolling this much they haven't found him lol weird character
The original Arch of Triumph is in Rome, Ancient Rome to be precise, yes the Romans were the originators, the Napoleonic French were drawing on the traditions of the past for legitimacy.
I just finished reading Yeonmi Park's 2nd book. I found her story to be very interesting, and as we are so close in age (she is a year and a day older than me) it was interesting to see all the parallels and contrasts between her childhood and mine. I would also highly recommend Malice's latest book "The White Pill" which is about multiple communist regimes throughout the 20th century.
I’ll reccomend a really good book I read 20 moons or so ago. _Korea's Place in the Sun: A Modern History_ (Bruce Cummings, 1997). Yeah, out of date today, as it doesn’t cover anything from the intervening years between now and 1997, BUT, the thing about books written at any particular time: the things glossed-over in a book written today (using both the prosaic and academic meanings of “gloss”) are gone into in greater detail. Plus there’s the zeitgeist of the times thing, if you see the value in that mode of retrospection. Side comment: an interesting thing to me about the fairly new phenomenon of “reactors” is, it’s an opportunity for TH-camrs to vary by interest, personality, approach, etc., etc. and stray from the whatever formula is becoming consensus. An opportunity not everyone trying it out is fully comfortable taking (maybe no one is). I’m fascinated by the contrasts. Whether it’s done consciously, semi-consciously, or not, your content appears (imo) to be on the edges of the emerging consensus (whatever that is), which I appreciate! Specifically, being educated and (I’m guessing) I and many others intake information more easily when sharing with someone apparently just being themselves. I dunno, a lot of us are less social since the internet, especially if we’re not presently employed, and my guess is a lot of people enjoy what virtual one-sided-ish company (you TH-camrs) we keep to be people who can’t be bothered with trying (too) hard to match a “formula for success”, while forsaking some large piece of who they are. Anyway, long-winded, thanks for reading, all this is complimentary. Subscribed.
Definitely just gave me another channel to check out, that video was delightful and highly enlightening on a few different things, such as the cuisine being more in line with traditional Korean cuisine as a result of its isolationist nature. Additionally, the banning and restricting of religious texts and ideology is pretty simple when you think of it. You can't convince your populace that you're God, if you allow them to read about and follow their own Gods.
Sooner or later they're gonna have to open up a little. Maybe only to the level of.early 1980s USSR or China, not even like today's China or even Cuba or Vietnam but way more open than they're now.

In order for a revolution to happen you'd need conscious people and right now everything is too tightly controlled by the government and the military, way more than in any other socialist or communist country. I believe they will open up ever so slightly and very slowly, but even after that they can modernize the country's economy and open more to tourists but still keep a more traditional society and an economy heavily dependant on government funds, kinda like 1950s-1960s Spain or Portugal.

It's so funny how you mention your faze of being fascinated watching all material you could find on North Korea. I went through it as well back in 2012 - 2013 accumulating over 30 documentaries about this strange country. One of the most memorable was a feature length documentary following an old American defector having lived in North Korea ever since the war.
There's a video on the channel named Qprekrupna2 titled 'Morning in Pyongyang'. Gives you a taste of what it's like to be a citizen of a capital where elites reside. A very bitter taste, at that.
Yes, having the portrait of leaders and the party symbols everywhere serves only one purpose : so people remember that they can't escape the politics and ideology of the regime. No matter where you are or what you do the party sight/hand or boot if you want is over you.

I think I might have to agree with you on Indian food. I eat more beef than anything else, but I really do like some smoked salmon. I'm planning on visiting a friend in Salt Lake City in a couple months. I'll make a point to check out a Korean restaurant one of the nights. If you ever see something called lefse, I would highly recommend it. Especially if it's being made fresh by an old Norwegian woman. Smoked salmon with some Swiss cheese and some spicy mustard wrapped in lefse is definitely my favorite way to eat fish.

There's a triumphal arch in London too: Marble Arch, and one could argue that the Brandenburg Gate is one too. Yes, I know it says "gate", but look at the thing! It's not gating anything and has them horsies at the top!
It was built as a toll gate, then rebuilt as a "really impressive" toll gate, then Napoleon took the horsies away and only when he was defeated it became a triumphal arch.
For a brief time it was a border crossing, and then it was walled off. Now it symbolises the triumph of the removal of both wall and border i guess. (but it is hideously cramped in between the buildings next to it, so the wall is still there too )

When I migrated to Belgium (I'm dutch), every classroom had a depiction of the king and queen of Belgium, next to a crucified Jesus above the chalk board. That was in 1985. Coming from a very liberal country, that seemed pretty surreal to me. Separation of state and religion existed, but a lot of schools are (were?) mostly raised by churches here.
Try looking at video of North and South Korea from space. South Korea looks like an island.

I agree with what you said about doubting everything said about pro north korea speakers, but shouldnt the same be said about some north korea defectors? Some of them get paid a lot of money to talk about how bad the country is, so much so that its the only job they have, sometimes telling absolutely insane stories just to attract an audience. I recommend checking a documentary called Loyal citizens of Pyongyang, where they talk about north koreans in south korea.
Also i think understing the korean war is also important, from how they see it, it was a civil war/revolution, internal politics. Until countries from outside started sticking their noses in.

Some points that are nice to be aware and think about when criticizing the 'authoritarian regime' that they have there:
"They can''t acces TH-cam": They are technically at war, and the US stand with the other side. Other than that, they suffer from a lot of economic blockades. But specifically about TH-cam, they probly could have it if TH-cam agreed to theirs terms of what content can be allowed there... as they do agree with all other countris they are in.
"Its a dinasty": Their constituiton is public on the internet and they they have democratic elections. You can of course think it is strange that the same family keeps winning it, but they do have it. Also, UK literally has a monarchy till this day, a constitutional one but i mean...
* It is nice to read about the people participation on their pollitical system there, they have far more say on stuff than most other coutries.
"They have pictures of their former presidents at schools": Well we have those here on brazil, pictures of the current mayor mostly. Also... Mount Rushmore... that was built on top of a sacred mountain for the natives...
"You can' travel to NK without government permition": Can you travel to any country without government permition?
"They have approved hairstyles": Pretty sure that is just fake.
"Religious literature": They have a lot of christian churches there just check on google maps. See if that is prohibited on their constituition.

"It is a closed country": They also have lots of foreign embassys there, more than some other countryes...
"Oh they have lots of bombs": Still at war and gets threatened by the US a lot, sometimes they use its military force to get basic trading going on without getting smashed by some kind of blockade.
Don't get me wrong they do have lots of limitations, from water to food to acces to some basic stuff. But they are not the evil North Korea either. The geography now videos are biased A LOT.
They did it on the Brazil's video too, they even say that the deforestation of the amazon rainforest is to grow more food when that is just not true, most of our soil is used to plant commodities, that we do not eat and most of it gets exported (That is true for the meat production too, it just gets exported).
One great video about North Korea is the 'We Went To North Korea To Get A Haircut' one by the channel BoyBoy. They just go there and film it and get a nice haircut.

In NK there is no internet, they have intranet, its like private network. Only some military have acces to internet.
Alejandro Cao de Benós (the only non-korean to ever work for the North Korean government) has done many interviews in spanish, even 1 hour podcasts, in wich he has said things like "There won't be a world without North Korea" or "If the US shows any level of agression against Korea we will instantly drop thermonuclear bombs in their main cities", he has also explained that even after 2 decades of serving the North Korean government he still can't live inside the country because they believe his job should be outside, so he lived around the world, mainly in Spain, until recently when he was declared as wanted by the FBI for "Conspiracy to violate the international emergency economic powers", basically he provided illegal services of blockchain and crypto currencies to the North Korean government. After this he disappeared and about 1 month later he twitted that he didn't understand why everyone was searching him, he was just eating falafel in Israel, even after trolling this much they haven't found him lol weird character

I just finished reading Yeonmi Park's 2nd book. I found her story to be very interesting, and as we are so close in age (she is a year and a day older than me) it was interesting to see all the parallels and contrasts between her childhood and mine. I would also highly recommend Malice's latest book "The White Pill" which is about multiple communist regimes throughout the 20th century.

I’ll reccomend a really good book I read 20 moons or so ago. _Korea's Place in the Sun: A Modern History_ (Bruce Cummings, 1997). Yeah, out of date today, as it doesn’t cover anything from the intervening years between now and 1997, BUT, the thing about books written at any particular time: the things glossed-over in a book written today (using both the prosaic and academic meanings of “gloss”) are gone into in greater detail. Plus there’s the zeitgeist of the times thing, if you see the value in that mode of retrospection.
Side comment: an interesting thing to me about the fairly new phenomenon of “reactors” is, it’s an opportunity for TH-camrs to vary by interest, personality, approach, etc., etc. and stray from the whatever formula is becoming consensus. An opportunity not everyone trying it out is fully comfortable taking (maybe no one is). I’m fascinated by the contrasts. Whether it’s done consciously, semi-consciously, or not, your content appears (imo) to be on the edges of the emerging consensus (whatever that is), which I appreciate! Specifically, being educated and (I’m guessing) I and many others intake information more easily when sharing with someone apparently just being themselves. I dunno, a lot of us are less social since the internet, especially if we’re not presently employed, and my guess is a lot of people enjoy what virtual one-sided-ish company (you TH-camrs) we keep to be people who can’t be bothered with trying (too) hard to match a “formula for success”, while forsaking some large piece of who they are.

Definitely just gave me another channel to check out, that video was delightful and highly enlightening on a few different things, such as the cuisine being more in line with traditional Korean cuisine as a result of its isolationist nature. Additionally, the banning and restricting of religious texts and ideology is pretty simple when you think of it. You can't convince your populace that you're God, if you allow them to read about and follow their own Gods.

@@TheGabrielPT I really don't think that's going to happen. In order for a revolution to happen you'd need conscious people and right now everything is too tightly controlled by the government and the military, way more than in any other socialist or communist country. I believe they will open up ever so slightly and very slowly, but even after that they can modernize the country's economy and open more to tourists but still keep a more traditional society and an economy heavily dependant on government funds, kinda like 1950s-1960s Spain or Portugal.

It's so funny how you mention your faze of being fascinated watching all material you could find on North Korea. I went through it as well back in 2012 - 2013 accumulating over 30 documentaries about this strange country. One of the most memorable was a feature length documentary following an old American defector having lived in North Korea ever since the war.
My Brothers and Sisters in the North is a great documentary on North Korea you can find on TH-cam. It was made by a South Korean-German filmmaker.

I think I might have to agree with you on Indian food. I eat more beef than anything else, but I really do like some smoked salmon. I'm planning on visiting a friend in Salt Lake City in a couple months. I'll make a point to check out a Korean restaurant one of the nights. If you ever see something called lefse, I would highly recommend it. Especially if it's being made fresh by an old Norwegian woman. Smoked salmon with some Swiss cheese and some spicy mustard wrapped in lefse is definitely my favorite way to eat fish.

Kinda weird Kim was born in 1984 reflecting Orwells book named 1984. A funny coincidence. I think the video lacks information about the econonomy of North Korea. How can they substain their army or people? Well the people are hit by hungers and by sickness. Officially Covid-19 did not occur in North Korea. That is very telling how an dictator controls his people. The emphasizes on how much North Korea use ressources on the millitary is also telling. The North Korean millitary budget matches 2% of the US millitary budget. So yes the North Koreans likes their millitary but compared to the US they are just a bug on a windshield
