Love your content! Just moved to California, new to saltwater fishing …. do I need a different type of reel? Have an open reel ugly stick medium action. Any pointers would be appreciated!
Hey Cody, welcome to Cali. You don't necessarily need a new fishing reel for rock fishing. Some use bass fishing gear. The biggest difference between dedicated saltwater gear vs. non saltwater gear is longevity. Dedicated saltwater gear are made to withstand saltwater better. Which leads to better corrosion protection and overall longevity. Now, try what you already have. Just make sure to rinse out your rod and reel with freshwater at the end of each trip. Ugly Sticks are tough rods. I own one for surf fishing. Even a medium action Ugly Stick can withstand the best inshore species. But when it comes to rock fishing, you need something stout. A surf rod in medium power Ugly Stick will work. But if you got a GS2, Elite or Carbon Ugly Sticks, make sure it's in the medium heavy yo heavy power.
Make sure you have at least 50lbs of braided line too.
Hope that helps Cody and if you don't mind, I'd like to answer your questions in one of my upcoming videos of rock fishing. Stay tuned for the shout out.
Tight lines. 🎣🤙🏼
