Finding Bass In Early Spring - Fountain Grove Lake, CA
This golf course lake has some great looking bass. I've fished this place previously but from the banks. Now that I have a small inflatable boat to take out to this lake, I can reach places I never did before.

This Lake Has Tons of Bass - Early Spring Bass Fishing with Friends (RAW FOOTAGE)
มุมมอง 21828 วันที่ผ่านมา
It's early spring here in Northern California and that can only mean one thing when it comes to fishing, the bass are starting to spawn. The temperature is still pretty cold but these bass are already active in this lake. This is my first time here and it sure won't be the last. Oh, did I mention I got a BOAT? #bassfishing #fishingvideo #fishing
Chasing Smallmouth Bass - The Creek

Nothing like early spring bass fishing when the water slowly starts to warm up and bass starts to head to shallow areas in search of the perfect spot for their beds and begin what's known as spawn season. There's only one place I always come back to when it comes to spring bass fishing. #bassfishing #smallmouth #freshwaterfishing
Bleeding Out A Cabezon For Dinner
มุมมอง 472หลายเดือนก่อน
We went back to the same spot where I caught a big Cabezon in hopes to find another big one. We didn't find a huge one, but we got a keeper that was just above the legal length for us to take home. We bled the fish on the spot so it will be fresh by the time we cook it. Needless to say, I love the taste of these fish. They are good eating. #fishing #lingcod #cabezon

Nice I was there yesterday but didn’t catch any
Good stuff!
Thank you!!!
My thinking was the same as yours, but prior to the early 90’s I don’t think there was an option for left handed baitcasters.
There wasn't a whole lot of options back then from what I heard. Glad it's different now.
When I first started fishing in the 70’s , baitcasters were all right-handed and spinning reels were all left-handed. That’s how you learned how to fish and that’s what you passed down to your kids. Maybe the next generation will be different.
How was fishing back then sir?
@@mrfilamfishingThere was less pressure and less lures to pick from. Fishing seemed easier but the guys who knew what they were doing still caught more fish, just like today. Catch and release is better now. A lot of people kept what they caught when I first started. Equipment is the biggest change. You had to train your thumb to cast baitcasters, now the brakes are so good it’s like using the old Zebco push button. Rods are so much lighter than the old fiberglass rods. I have all the new stuff. It’s great!
Sea Ranch?
Between Sea Ranch and Gualala
Id give it a solid 3, nice catch bro
Thanks bro. Weighed it before putting it back off camera. It came to 4lbs 13oz.
Bro bro I'm thinking of going to same holy spot I'm thinking Wednesday maybe Tuesday
Wait till Saturday. Found out the last couple spot isn't open till this coming Saturday.
Ok bro thank you
Should have gone to oasis side bro
Alright alright alright
Good morning. 😁
What's the biggest Cabezon you've caught?
What's your favorite fish to take home and eat?
What's your favorite JDM reel?
This is a protected cove by the California Fish and Wildlife. Without propper permission, you CANNOT fish this spot. This spot will no longer be featured in any of my videos to not encourage fishing here. 🤙🏼
Just a heads up. This is a protected cove by the California Fish and Wildlife. Without propper permission, you CANNOT fish this spot.
What made you wanna fish this spot ? How would you suggest I scope out spots to rockfish
You want areas where there are rock structures. A cove like the one in the video is a great example because coves usually have great underwater rock structures. It also tends to be calmer water which makes rock fishing better. I'll make a video in the future covering your question and showing what to look for when picking a spot to rock fish. Good luck and tight lines. 🤙🏼
Why wouldn't you fillet the fish first and put just meat in the cooler. I always figured they were full of worms???
Great question. You can usually see the worms or parasite crawling on them on the outside if they have any inside. Although not always the case. Most, if not all, of those worms will be focusing on the main parts of the fish such as the stomach, etc. We throw those away once we cut the fish open. Now there's multiple ways to take a fish home. This is one of them. Bleed and freeze. You don't always have to fillet them on the spot. But you definitely can if you want. Freezing them can help rid of any worms. But they all die anyway once cooked and don't affect humans even if digested after cooking. So prep and store properly after catching for transport. Then cook properly and you'll be good to go. Hope that answers your question. Tight lines. 🤙🏼
@@mrfilamfishing wow you can actually see them on the outside never new that. I've never been able to bring myself to eat 1 of those things. I know with rock cod ling cod I always fillet them rock cod have an awful smell if you cut into the guts. Plus you don't have to bring everything home you can recycle the endtrailse and throw in ocean.
@@ericluscombe3272 Yeah, just make sure to fillet properly and you won't have that awful smell. Bleeding them and icing them helps a ton. It tastes a lot better. Cabezon is good eating. I haven't come up to a Cabezon with worms yet. However, I have come up to Lingcod that had parasites on them. Try Cabezon out. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Tight lines. 🤙🏼
Great vid! Cabezon is delicious man, bet it was a great meal
It sure was. Sliced into portions. Prepped it with some egg and crushed stuffings. A little bit of seasoning then fried on some butter stove top. It was delicious. 🤤
Love your content retired veteran here moving back to the bay...would love to go fishing and learn a bit from you, tried surf fish along the coast its really fun thanks man
Thank you. Glad you enjoy my content. Veteran here as well. When you get back here in the Bay, hit me up. We'll go fishing. 🤙🏼
@mrfilamfishing thanks yeah man I'm here now east bay I've been surf fishing but wanna try rock fishing it looks fun

@CentseiSam good morning still looking for rockfishing buddies I always go solo
@@samamexp Good to hear. Yeah, I'm always down to go fishing as long as schedule permits. 🤙🏼
Nice
Thanks 🤙🏼
I started as a 10 year old with a spinning reel with left crank. Have never changed. I did buy a right crank TD Zillion when my right shoulder was injured and learned to cast left handed. I have 2 TD Zillions one left and one right crank. I also have 3 Shimano Calcutta TE's 101GT 201 and 401. Being able to cast right or left is an advantage in certain situations. Problem is which reel you have in hand at the moment. So some switching does occur. Not having to switch hands, when the bait lands you are fishing.
I can reel with both hands and you're right, it is good to be able to reel with both hands in certain situations. Those are some nice reels. Especially that Shimano Calcutta. I almost bought a similar reel from Daiwa's side.
Nice job catching the Cab! Careful on lipping them. They can crush abalone with their mouth.
Thank you. Yeah, come to find out they can crush a lot of things. That would have been a video to see. 😂

Love your content! Just moved to California, new to saltwater fishing …. do I need a different type of reel? Have an open reel ugly stick medium action. Any pointers would be appreciated!
Hey Cody, welcome to Cali. You don't necessarily need a new fishing reel for rock fishing. Some use bass fishing gear. The biggest difference between dedicated saltwater gear vs. non saltwater gear is longevity. Dedicated saltwater gear are made to withstand saltwater better. Which leads to better corrosion protection and overall longevity. Now, try what you already have. Just make sure to rinse out your rod and reel with freshwater at the end of each trip. Ugly Sticks are tough rods. I own one for surf fishing. Even a medium action Ugly Stick can withstand the best inshore species. But when it comes to rock fishing, you need something stout. A surf rod in medium power Ugly Stick will work. But if you got a GS2, Elite or Carbon Ugly Sticks, make sure it's in the medium heavy yo heavy power. Make sure you have at least 50lbs of braided line too. Hope that helps Cody and if you don't mind, I'd like to answer your questions in one of my upcoming videos of rock fishing. Stay tuned for the shout out. Tight lines. 🎣🤙🏼
@@mrfilamfishing thanks for the help! Great information! Tight lines, thanks for your service btw!
@@codyrunge8190 Thanks Cody. Maybe we'll bump into each other while fishing. Take care. 🤙🏼
I have been looking to buy the lexa but I don't see that in left hand... nor do I see the tatula in left hand.. so I think I'll go for your zillion.. great video
I'm glad to have helped. You'll love the Zillion TW HD. Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🤙🏼
I gotta tell you, bro, I have dove dozens of those coves north of Jenner. 2 things: water is crazy on day shown- in my opinion, too dangerous for shore casting. Or diving either. 2nd thing: all the chat about lings?... Well, ling cod are not the up-to-shore species the gentleman imagines. Remember, there are one hundred and nine species of rockfish on the north coast! The one you would be far more likely to find in close, such as what one can reach from shore, casting, is, cabazone. The same TYPE of ambush predator, but inhabiting a different zone, the intertidal. Thanks, enjoyed the video.😊
My frend have the jdm and the american daiwa the same reel and y like better the american daiwa maybe is me
The older American version has a deeper spool, 9 CRBBs and 1 Magsealed BB with a 15 lbs drag. Those specs alone makes your choice a great one. The main reason why I went with the JDM is because I got a deal on it, and also it has a drag clicker. Does the US version have one? Because if it does then I believe it's the better reel. The JDM has only 13.2 lbs of drag, which is fine for what I do with the reel.
Iam the same iam natural left-hand and iam used any reels left-hand o right hand side
That's awesome. For me, it's more comfortable than switching so it only make sense.
Keitech rocks. Thanks for the video
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. 🤙🏼
Good to see you again. Hope everything goes well for you brother.
Thank you for your kind words. Gonna be focusing on TH-cam more. I hope all is well on your end. 🤙🏼
Casting with the right hand, and retrieving with the right as well. It really is not important, i usually swap hands while the lure is still flying in the air, so you're not wasting any time swapping hands when the lure is in the water. Always thought that paying attention to this is stupid because everyone should cast and retrieve the way they feel comfy with, not the way someone else told em to.
Agreed, go what you are comfortable with.
What spot is this?
Its nearby Sea Ranch.
New subscriber from BC canada. Nice video kabayan😊

@@frankpee1453Bibilin ko sa na yung Tatula 300, pero nakita ko to. No brainer. May 10 CRBBs at drag clicker pa. Perfect para sakin.
FYI - hey bro that cove starting at 7:40 thats off limits, you cannot fish there. Peep out fish legal if you're not sure. Take care
Thanks for the heads up. I found that out. I was told as long as I fish to the left or get permission, I'm good to go. Otherwise, you're right, it is a protected cove. Thanks man. Tight lines. 🤙🏼
Love the saltwater stuff! Go to Campbell Cove out in Bodega head. It’s the other side of that Jetty you fished before and it’s free parking.
Thank you so much for the tip. I'll probably do a video and make a shout out to ya. 🤙🏼

Bro bro seeing those waves reminds me of that fort Bragg trip I took with Handy and cuzzo
It was some big waves bro.
Black Rock fish
Brah how far north, sea ranch, fort Ross farther?
Near Sea Ranch
Cool video. How do u get to this spot
Go to Doran Beach and once there, go all the way to the very back where you see the Jeti. Then it's just a matter of hopping those rocks. Be very careful though.
If you would of caught that seal. You wouldn’t stand a chance. I hooked a seal one time with a 50lb line and your rod or you will go with it.
Then I would have the privilege to swim with the SEAL. Hahahaha.
Hola amigo buen video saludos
Hello im heading over in early spring what should I use?
If you're going for Rock Fish and Lingcod, use the lures in the video. Any soft plastic swimbaits like a Keitech or Pitbull tackle will work. Put those on a jighead as shown in the video. Color wise, anything Green Pumpkin, Root beer or Bright green/chartreuse works best. When you cast, let it fall to the bottom then hop them along the bottom. But be careful not to get snag. Above all, have fun. Tight lines. 🤙🏼
@@mrfilamfishing Suggested jighead weights?
@@monkeyslap Depending on the depth you're trying to cover. The heavier the weight, the faster it will sink to the bottom. Also, the heavier the weight, the better it will be against the current of the ocean. I say start with 2 ounce weight and work your way up based on depth and current.
@@mrfilamfishing So, 2oz as a *minimum* for Bodega jetty? Wanting to narrow down my purchases. Jigheads are damn expensive!
@@monkeyslap Yes, no less than 2 oz Jigheads. Go to Outdoor Pro Shop and go to the bass section and get some Strike King Jigheads. Their the cheapest quality Jigheads you can get. If you can afford it, Pitbull Tackle that glows in the dark are very good in getting more action.
I miss the CA coast.
It is beautiful.
Nice video. I used to fish that jetty tons when I was a kid. Late 60’s early 70’s. Nice green ling. They get that way because of their diet.
Thank you. Yeah, this was my first time rock fishing. Definitely not the last.
What’s a good salt water set up? Wanna hit the salt for the first time out there in tomales
Sorry for the late reply. Can't go wrong with an Ugly Stick Big Water 10 footer. Best bang for your buck and Ugly Sticks are tough as hell. Hard to break them. As for reel, get something that has a baitrunner. That way, when a fish takes your bait, your pole won't runaway with it. For line I say get braid and anything 80lbs test and above. Best of luck to you out there.
Those aren't good lures for rock fishing , you need a jig with a hoochie skirt on the hooks in florescent color then use sliced squid or sardines That works the best bro
Lingcod
outdoor pro in cototi is the only place i go. they dont have many heavy specialty rods but other than that they have evrything you need. would love to fish with you some day man. Am a sebastopololian.
