  • Kodak is "going into a new dimension" and has announced a 3D printer. We talked to Marcelo Ruiz Camauer, CTO of Smart International.
The aim of the printer is reliability and consistency for a wide variety of users. This multi-user printer can plug into social media/storage accounts to share time lapses and files.
The frame is made of 2mm solid steel and the magnetically attached heated bed is 3mm of aluminum. The machine is enclosed to keep heat and noise inside, fingers and dust out. It also features a ball screw which moves the z-axis and a HEPA filter for fumes.
The Kodak Potrait will be shipping in March or April of 2018. A handful of materials are already available with more to come.

I've heard they're trying to be on the same level as an ultimaker 3. Sadly this looks like a home built piece of garbage. The rep has a lot to be desired as well. Passing on this unit.

My only question is.. how is it possible to Kodak have a 3D printer with such great features and ludicrous finishes. It is actually fucking hilarious... look at the video at minute 4:26 around the touchscreen... OMG..

what do you guys mean by the finish?

This is a common thing. Most printers that are at shows, are usually prototypes. Or rather think of it as a developer kit. The released product will be more polished. Most companies dont actually always make things in house. They design and then send plans to other vendors to make parts which are more finished. The prototype is usually in house, so the finish isnt great, it's more so functionality.

this looks great. its nothing like the ultimaker. it has a very sturdy core xy drive systrm which i think is the best. open source smoothieware. You can tweak the settings. proven hot end and extruders. dual ball screws for the bed.

I don't know about the printer...but that clear spool holder is what I want right now. Also no more 3d printers selling for thousands. The price of this printer $3,500. Yeah...unless you got some crazy new tech not gonna happen. I can print with the same quality with a $500 printer.

This is actually not a bad package, listening to the handy features and sensors it has. Pity they didn't have a more confident and charismatic representative.

Really cool. I'm going to have to give their filaments a go!

So did this guy make this in his garage?

This looks like a corporate move to earn that government science research money . This printer looks like a clone of a chinese clone of an ultimaker.

@@Fargo3dprinting3D Thanks I get your point. I'm not criticizing you, but Kodak as a major corporation. As a tech company, Kodak has done nothing to improve upon open source fdm technology that already exists. All this printer is, is a clone, I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this printer is a rebranded clone manufactured in China. The made in china part does not bother me, rather its that this is another clone. You see major corporations drive innovations forward, Kodak is a tech company. Their products should've had atleast a few new innovations since they are stepping into a new market. Even if they don't spend on research atleast they should support open source researchers and facilities. It's really sad to watch Kodak acting like a chinese cloning company. Even the camera inside the printer is not improved upon since Kodak is a camera company. I hope people understand this product for what it truly is, a corporate strategy, and I could see it when Marcelo was explaining the product, poor guy. Thanks for the coverage of CES 2019 tho, life of a content creator is a tough one.

Sorry Kodak, late to the game

Yeah pretty much but I think one of the points that they should have touched on more was the filter. Printing in ABS is awesome except it will kill you. Would like to know how effective their filtration is. Didn't ask anything about slicing and whether the machine accepts gcode. Interview was kinda stale.

Actually, I wouldn't say they are late to the game at all. 3d printing is still in its infancy. Most printer out there are not plug and play and require a lot of tinkering. Even the Ultimaker 3+ which is similarly priced isn't exactly a slam dunk when it comes to providing reliable and consistent prints. Kodak appears to be listening by offering an open filament, high end machine with all the bells and whistles (e3d nozzles and heads, automatic leveling, a camera, enclosed chamber, filtration and lighting system, removable plate, build tak, etc.). They haven't gone cheap on this. My only question, and I can't find the spec anywhere, is what is the print quality like? How many microns can this print at and at what speed? Also, will this take gcode produced from other slicers? I've been in the market for a good 3d printer. This is the first one I've found that checks off all the boxes. Hopefully, it's as good as it seems.

John Christensen what about prusa mk3? I think they should be ahead of the game. It's true 3d is still in its infancy but why play catch up with companies like prusa? Why not be a game changer and be pioneers with metal printing?

    • @tikishark1
      @tikishark1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Actually, I have a Mk3 on order... I wanted the experience of building my own kit. However, I also wanted a dependable production printer as well. I've been looking at the Ultimaker 3 (Very expensive and you need to use their nozzles and hot ends), MakerGear M3 (Expensive as well, and does not provide an enclosure), and the lulzbot Taz 6 (Nice leveling system, but no enclosure, and their print heads are proprietary ((and huge))). I thought the Kodak checked off all my "WANT" boxes. I see where you're going with metal printing though. Watching CES coverage, there was a manufacturer that had a machine that printed in metal, however, that thing was like $150,000. I'm sure Kodak could produce something similar, but that's more of a niche market. I'm sure we'll see home / office based metal printers in the future, but not in the timeframe Kodak would probably want to break into the field.

Your joking right? Is the Prusa enclosed with filtered air? Is it dual extruder? With a system to raise the one not used so it doesn't hit your work? Color touchscreen? Camera? Remote access with your smartphone? You consider a B&W scroll wheel with 4 line display modern? And you think the Prusa has automatic z-height adjustment? Yeah, the two are exactly the same.
