    Massive thanks to Inchcape Volkswagen Cheltenham for the loan of the T-Roc R in this video - this is a demo vehicle which you too can test drive, give them a call on 01242 222233.
    I don't mind SUVs and don't mind the Golf R so I was curious as to whether a mixture of the two would be something I'd love or hate, watch this video to find out!

    Doesn't seem like that's too much to say about this. It's a small suv with the golf r engine and Andrews review seems to confirm it's exactly what you'd expect! That's not a bad thing mind!

    My mum has a Seat Arona 1.0 turbo that I drive time to time. I believe it’s mostly the same as the standard 2wd TRoc. Always amazed how sharp the steering is. Feels a bit like a modern, higher riding Mk1/2 golf gti.

    Good, balanced review. Personally I'm not a fan of SUVs, but it was an interesting comparison to a Golf R. I find it strange that VW gave the T-roc the "R" treatment - I always thought the T-roc was more of a Polo SUV & that the Tiguan was the Golf SUV equivalent. The T-roc is certainly specced more like a Polo (note the upgraded sound system is the Beats audio, rather than the excellent Dynaudio Excite system from the Golf). I couldn't help noticing your comments about the dashboard plastics as well. If only it had been a Polo R, now THAT would have been the ultimate pocket rocket 😂.
    Let's just say I have no regrets about ordering a Golf R estate - which has to be one of the best cars for mixing practicability & performance out there!

    Will it really handle as good as a Golf in hard driving though?
    Also I don't understand, if it's heavier, but has the same engine as the Golf R, how does it have a faster 0-60? Is it geared shorter?
    I have so many questions about this vehicle.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what I said about T Roc R but don't think I'd have said or at least meant that it was faster in accleration than Golf R, can you give me the time stamp when I said this?
      It will not handle as well as the Golf R but the Golf is to good as it takes the pleasure away from driving as driver input isn't really called for i.e. a skilled driver won't be much quicker than an average driver on a challenging road. My feelings were than the height and weight will mean that the driver has more to do on a challenging road *because it's less good* and this will be more enjoyable of not faster. Ultimately the best roads are 90 kph / 60 mph so you want to enjoy a car at those kinds of speeds, Golf R needs around 30 mph more to come alive which isn't safe or legal.
      Any more questions feel free to ask sir

      @@volkswizard Sorry, I may have carried over other things from other T Roc R testing videos. On carwow, Matt tested the T Roc's 0-60 time and was able to produce a baffling 4.2 second time. The fastest stock Golf R 0-60 times I've seen are around 4.8 seconds, according to 0-60times.com. If this is true, all this means is the T Roc R is faster off the line than the Golf R. And I am trying to find out why. It's a bit hard, as we don't have T Rocs in the states.

    the wheel arch extensions are there to meet legal requirements. Pulling the whole arch out to cover the wheel would be impractical so if you have wider wheels / tyres as on the R this is the easiest way to meet the requirement

    Great review. Don’t see why you’d get this over a Golf R really. If they did a Tiguan R, then at least there would have been more boot space for kids stuff. Troc R has almost the same size boot as the Golf.
    The height difference isn’t that major either.

    Nice looking car, good adjustment for driving, good for driving down country lanes with hedges visibility wise, cost wise bit steep especially for the quality of the interior, mind you all t-roc's have low rent plastic. More exclusive than the golf R and probably less enticing for your average car thief than the golf, secondhand wise will probably be easier to find an unmodified one that has been thrashed unlike the golf too.

    Priced up a T-ROC R, to the same spec as my 19 plate Golf R on the VW website. The T-ROC had a identical spec (if not a bit better with the brakes), and it comes in at about £7k less. I can imagine it will appeal to some people who want a sporty SUV or family car that isn't too silly.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kiran. Bit confused by this as T-Roc R is more than Golf R basic price, how did you manage to make it £7k cheaper with options?

    • @contriteprinciple
      @contriteprinciple 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      volkswizard a lot of the optional extras I got on my Golf R (ordered in January 2019) seem to be standard on the T-ROC (spec’d on the website last week) so a “full spec” golf R is a very similar interior to a “full spec” golf R. But as you said in your review, the brakes are the club sport style brakes, which I didn’t get on my Golf R.
      When comparing the Spec, the T-Roc had a very similar spec to my golf R, however the list price for the T-Roc on the website was £7k less than the invoice for my Golf R.
      That being said, I haven’t looked at the Golf R webpage recently, so I don’t know if the standard options on the R have changed in the last 10 months.

  • @AutoVidzzz
    @AutoVidzzz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Whilst it seems obvious, you can't compare this to a Golf R. They're different propositions. Loads of purists saying the hatch is fine, but these CUVs and SUVs have been outselling hatch's for a while now.
    Regardless what people think, it is more practical than a hatch too. More capable dare I say?
    From the reviews I've seen of this model, the R division have done a fantastic job with the chassis. Not simply a cut and paste from the golf. I'd love one and would choose this over a Golf all day.👏🏼

    • @volkswizard

      The Q3 surprised me with how it drove as it promised nothing, the T-Roc R promised a lot (it's an R after all) but delivered less than expected and I am sure the steering felt better on the Audi but that did have adapters dampers which would have done a better job overall so prob not a fair comparison. Both are a similar price but the Q3 was weighed down with gear

    I'm not too keen re.your comments on pensioners, we don't always feel the need to drive too fast on UK country roads, if only 'cos there are too many trees / hedges to see what's coming... Possibly we aren't ready to die at the wheel just yet...... 'Tis better in Germany though, 100 km/h on country roads is much safer /easier (no hedges, etc.). As you might have guessed I'm 72 & SWMBO is 70, so we "must" be considered to be slow & dangerous, except that we both own Golf R's, ( hatch & a wagon ). My daily driver is a humble Skoda Superb 2.0 TSi albeit with a stage 1 map (252ps). Why, 'cos it's fun to own & run a "sleeper" with zero street cred.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The comment wasn't aimed at pensioners generally, if you revisit my words you will see it was specifically aimed at pensioners in Ford Fiestas. I am sure that will offend pensioners in Ford Fiestas but that's my experience of driving that road which has a 60 mph limit but many drivers can't exceeed 40 on it. I don't have an issue with people doing that whatever car they are in, even a Golf R, hence why I am prepared to loiter by the side of the road to let them do their thing in their own space and time.

      @marymoffatt2060 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got to agree as a fellow senior. Had a 19 reg Golf R till last year and just got a new T Roc R because, sometimes, it's useful to accelerate away from LGV's driving in clusters (elephant racing) on dual carriageways. Been caught speeding twice, both occasions due to badly signed, unfamiliar roads but have zero interest in any form of road racing and found it annoying when, on occasion, the boy racers tried to incite me into a speed contest because they assumed driving a performance model made me an aspirational formula one driver. I will add that I was a LGV class one driver and also owned GSXR 1000 and similar motorbikes ( having ridden powerful bikes no car can even come close in terms of acceleration, speed or thrill).
