    How ironic seeing 844 assisting stalled diesels.
    If they thought 844 was handy to have at that particular moment, imagine their eyes if 4014 had showed up, LOL.

    This is one of my favorite documentaries 844 from when she left the factory in 1944 all the way to the beginning of her excursion career. Most of the shots seen in this video where used on a couple shows back in the eighties and nineties and I can name all them off the top of my head in order that they were made ghost trains was the first one, following that was Shining Time Station, she appeared on When Giants Roamed twice and Trains Unlimited 17 times including the episode Age of Steam, and her most recent appearance was on Extreme Trains where she just returned to life after extensive rebuild. 844 the Queen of the Rails, the Star of the Train World, and yes the Living Legend herself 844 will always be my friend I am glad that steam shop is always taking care of her she is the face of the Union Pacific and the ambassador of good will. Soon her brothers will be awaked and the last surviving engines of their classes will take to the rails to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the railroad and the Golden Spike. 844 is back in service and soon Big Boy and 3985 will be back in service also I can't wait.

    What a great and impressive documentary on the Union Pacific rr fef class 4-8-4 locomotives and specifically the 844, Union Pacific had a variety of famous examples of steam power during the steam era. The UP 844 has an impressive operation history and I really enjoy seeing the 844 in the "greyhound" style paint scheme, UP should repaint the 844 back into that scheme again.

    I grew up near the New York Central', (big 4) Cleveland city by pass. When I was about 4 years old, my dad and I ran to see my very first train. Imagine seeing 3 NYC versions of this loco (Niagara's) at the head end of a freight, with 2 more mid train, and one more pushing at the rear. Needless to say, I've had the smell and sound and feel of steam locos ever since, I'm 73. I just love the sound of 844's deep throat whistle, sometimes I get a bit of a chill run through my body, just for the love of trains. ;-)

    Now if we can arrange 611 and 844 to double head! I think it would be great to do a cross country excursion for veterans and to raise awareness for veteran suicide. 22 of us die each day. I think the railroads can help. Do something like a Roanoke VA to Cheyenne WY. Or Washington DC to San Francisco. Maybe convert some of the support cars dedicating each branch of the armed services. And maybe haul cars of various military equipment from ww2 to the war on terrorism.

    I watched this episode when it came out it is an amazing story towards the end of this episode where 844 pushes a stalled freight up Archer. It was amazing back in April when I was given a rare opportunity to take part in the Operation Lifesaver Special as part of the Boise Turn Heritage Tour. Operation Lifesaver and I go a long way back I actually helped them out a couple of times. This was a thank-you gift to me for following rail safety and plus it was a dream come true for me when I got to ride 844.

      Alex D Yea. That locomotive that you linked below was renumbered in 1949 because of a coal strike (The Union Pacific renumbered 10 of the "early" Challengers by simply replacing the 8 with a seven, example 3810 became the 3710) but the U.P. renumbered that same engine again back to 3810 in 1950 (along with the other 9 "early" 4-6-6-4s that were numbered in the 3700 series). Now the "big" Challengers (which 3985 and 3977 are examples of) started being renumbered to the 3700 series in 1952. The U.P. converted to oil firing and renumbered 18 of the "big" Challengers (the conversion to oil firing started in the late 40s). 3975-3984 became 3708-3717 (with the 3977 becoming the 3710). The 3977 was renumbered again in 1961 to 900079 when her duties in snow melter Service began, when she was retired and put on display she got her original number back

      guess the net doesn't have everything

    • @natejenkins8645
      @natejenkins8645 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Alex D It's all a little confusing to be honest lol. But in Territories like California and the Pacific Northwest where coal wasn't as available, U.P. Needed oil fired engines, and to make it easier to distinguish oil fired power from coal fired power, they changed the numbers of 18 of the Big Challengers to the 3700 series. If you ever want to read up on Union Pacific Challengers, there are two fantastic books called "Union Pacific Steam Challenger portraits" and "The History Of The Challengers", a lot of great stuff in those two books.

    • @silverstatehighiron
      @silverstatehighiron 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Gabriel Perez Not really. Many of the excursions these days require a diesel for power to the passenger cars (on Amtrak sponsored excursions), as for the UP, it’s for insurance and it’s used as a tool to switch cars and such.

    did you record your tv screen or pc? if you did this on your pc could you please use a screen recorder. otherwise nice film but it was bottlenecked because you recorded this with a phone lol

      I used an actual video camera, the quality of the program was bad, and didn't fit in the whole tv screen, so i had to zoom in to make it fit and that didn't help either.

    Why does the #844 4-8-4 have the large sheet metal cheek pieces at the front? It looks like it restricts visibility for the engineer, adds weight penalty, and will pack snow. Is it intended for an advertising billboard?

    • @southwestvirginiarailfan729
      @southwestvirginiarailfan729  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cc Wynn No, they arent for a billboard, They are smoke deflectors, they help carry smoke up & away from the cab. Where they are, they do not really hinder visibility all that much. Don't really think they would pack snow much either, UP usually kept their lines plowed. The engine is always kept indoors, so snow getting on it is irrelevant. They don't run 844 in winter 95% of the time anyway.

    • @ccwynn6657
      @ccwynn6657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK. I guess at high speed that might work, and #844 has been clocked at 144 MPH in the past.

    • @southwestvirginiarailfan729
      @southwestvirginiarailfan729  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cc Wynn yeah at high speeds they work. It was 124 mph, the record is 126.7 set by the british Mallard and it was a different 800 series engine, not 844.

    • @ccwynn6657
      @ccwynn6657 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      At 124 in the plains or front range on a hot day, it would be miserable in the cab, otherwise, I suppose.

    Some times she is belching massive plumes of smoke, and sometimes barely a wisp. Why is that?

    • @southwestvirginiarailfan729
      @southwestvirginiarailfan729  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually the plumes are either for show or they are sanding the flues. Barely a wisp is good because the fire is burning efficiently and that's what you want to see.

    Can UP 844 Travel to New York State?

    • @southwestvirginiarailfan729
      @southwestvirginiarailfan729  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Railfanner Channel It could if UP wanted to take it there, but they would have to work it out with other railroads that 844 would travel over, since I don't believe UP has tracks of its own in new york state.

    • @southwestvirginiarailfan729

      Railfanner Channel There is railroads that like steam, but they usually put their freight business first, I remember reading about the group that owns 3751 wanted to take it to train festival 2011 in Illinois, a 5,000 mile trip. Their request was denied by BNSF to move over their trackage due to the fact they were expecting an increase in traffic volumes the month 3751 was scheduled to go. Even though 3751 operates on BNSF tracks all the time, sometimes they just won't let it happen.

    • @HerksTrainShed
      @HerksTrainShed 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Railfanner channel no steam engines are aloud to enter new york state do to the under ground rail systems and due to its polution they cant really run steam there anymore all hudsens in the 1930 to the 1950's were not aloud in city limits

      That show actually used some of the footage of the 844 (which was still numbered 8444 because a GP30 diesel locomotive had the original number) which is what you see in the opening and closing credits of every episode, except for the Christmas special which featured Grand Canyon Railway #18, but that’s another story.
