So many memories what a great time the NFL was that year and those years in the 80's. I was 13 years old and even then I understood how important Buddy Ryan was and I was really upset that he was leaving.
Very glad I clicked on this actually bought a tear to my eyes for Mike to admit how selfish he was and Immature. It takes a real man to admit to such things 1985 Bears best defense I ever saw at least for that one year. I will give to the Steelers for best defense for the longest period of time in the 1970's and to the Ravens that year with Dilfer as QB when they didn't score a TD for a month. That defense was punishing offenses didn't even want to go out there.
Singletary was a beast … he can not be a head coach again because he loves hard and hates harder. This generation of football players could not handle his style or commitment to the game
But he was a TERRIBLE coach. I'm an Eagles fan and I'm 58. I've watched every Eagles game from 1986 on. He hired terrible coaches and never hired or drafted a great RB and O linemen. He blitzed way too much and he lost more than he won. And he wouldn't admit his D wasn't as good as the next one: Bud Carson.
I'm a lifelong Pat's fan but i admired how the Bears dominated. I had never seen anything like that. Maybe it was because i was a young 20 year old however, with all the great defensive players, all i remember from that game was...Richard Dent, tackle, Richard Dent interrupted the play, Richard Dent...I thought it was the best game ever by a defensive player ever. That whole superbowl is on youtube. I watched it again and it wasn't as bad a blow out as i remember. Yes the Pats were being dominated but they scored the first points 3, :-) and the score didn't get out of hand until the second half. To this day, i am blown away when a team is on the goal line and they don't hand the ball off to a lineman. I thought that was brilliant handing off to the Fridge. I mean, you get 300+ pounds moving one direction, he can easily bend the defensive line backwards. I know the Ravens statistically had a better defense one year but to me, i've never seen a more dominant defense in my life. Sad about to see what happened to Steve McMichael and the Fridge. Unfortunatley, we had a cheap owner in Norman Braman who wouldnt go the extra mile to get that team over the hump. Shameful.
A few summers after high school I worked at a resort in Green Lake, WI that he rented a house for a week before training camp. He took his boat out every day and a bunch of different players came over to visit. One of the guys I worked with got to play some basketball with them once
If the Bears had waited until 1983 to draft a quarterback they could have drafted Marcus Allen in 82 and Dan Marino in 83. Maybe they still only win the one Super Bowl. Maybe they win four or five. It would have extended Walter Payton's career and given Marino the defense and running game he never had in Miami.

Depends on when you call the '85 Bears as "over". They won the Fog Bowl in 1988, then they beat the Saints in the Wild Card in 1990. Still had plenty of '85 Bears on the team.
It's a shame the '85 Bears started to fall apart personnel wise almost immediately after winning the SB. A lot of people thought a dynasty had been born, but no.

Marino knew how to defeat their defense that was a man short in the secondary due to rushing an extra man. The Bears may have needed to depend on their under rated offense, especially the running game, plus make adjustments on defense. Play ball control, keeping Marino off the field. We'll never know because New England's defense stopped Marino which Bears failed to do. The Bears would then shred New England's defense in Super Bowl. Also the Dolphins and Marino may just have been a bad match-up for Bears defense.
What should have been a dynasty but was only good for 1 championship shows what can happen when people get too full of themselves. Only 1 championship for a team that great is kind of ridiculous. Not like we were talking dumping players for salary caps (NHL) or anything.

Ditka went for a 4th-and-25 with about 7 and a half minutes left from around midfield instead of punting the ball and letting his defense have a chance to make a play to turn the game. It was a Brandon-Staley-esque decision on his part and doomed any chance the Bears had to come back. Marino didn't have near the success from mid-3rd quarter on in that game that he had in the first half.
Narrator: He didn't have to go, and it's lame when coordinators jump ship early on in a dynasty, probably shortening it.............the offers would still be there, and even more so if you take that great team on to more wins and maybe even more rings.

The 1985 Bears were lucky to play in the NFC Central, and have the Redskins and 49ers basically in reset mode in 1985. The Giants were up and coming but not there yet and the Cowboys were old and in sharp decline. They played the Patriots of all teams in the Super Bowl instead of the Dolphins or Raiders that were the better teams in the AFC. We know that the Bears were lucky in 1985 because they never were even in a Super Bowl again during that era. Fluke team all the way.

The Patriots were not deserving of even appearing in a Super Bowl that year. This was a very unimpressive team, as the score reflected.
