    I love my quilt. I am 6'5 and weigh 280 lbs, I had been using long wide sleeping bags but they were always a bit too tight. I am an active sleeper, rolling on my back and sides often. I could never get a good sleep, my sleeping bags were always too tight. I started looking for an extra wide bag and while I was doing that I saw your video on the therm-a-rest Vesper Quilt. I decided to try it and got the long wide -6 celsius version. WOW what a difference. I will never go back to a sleeping bag. I have had my quilt down to 0 celsius and didn't have any issues. I sleep so much better with a quilt. Thanks for your videos on quilts, definitely has helped me.

    Warbonnet outdoors sells the diamondback quilt . It’s a better buy than enlightenment equipment quilt when they have a sale.
    Great review Justin😉

    UGQ, Enlightened Equipment (EE), Katabatic, Nunatak, Gryphon Gear all make great quilts and are fantastic companies. For many years I refused to go to quilts, continuing to use sleeping bags. Once I finally bit the bullet and used one, I can't go back. My recommendation is pay for whatever extras you want on the quilt. Go Wide, get a draft collar, don't skimp because you'll just end up buying a quilt later down the road with the features you want.
    Good way to test the waters is try an REI Magma quilt to dip your toes and return if it doesn't suit you. You can always return it within a year if it just doesn't work for you,
    Simply put, they just rock for packability, weight, and diversity of uses/temp ranges. I wish I had made the move years ago.

      Don’t forget Hammock Gear! They are probably the best bang for your buck

      The Magma looks like a great quilt. I wish they made a 20F version as the comfort temp for the Magma is just a bit to cold for me, :(

      @@JustinOutdoors My purely unsubstantiated guess is they wanted to make sure this quilt would sell first before expanding the line to two different temperatures, similar to the Magma bags.

    I've been a hammocker for the last 7 years but I'm going back to ground this fall with the advancement in pad (side sleeper) and tent technology. One thing I'm bringing with me are quilts. I'll never go back to a sleeping bag.

    Thanks for the video, Justin! Do you get clammy in warmer weather when sleeping in shorts and a tee? And are quilts reversible?

    Or you go with the Sierra Designs Cloud 800 for the best of both worlds!

    Thanks Justin, I appreciate the breakdown of the benefits of a quilt. I'm just a little hesitant of the price and looking for a budget option.

      Depending on the warmth you need, you could check out the Paria down quilt or a hammock gear econo!

    We love our Katabatic quilts. Not as customizable but great quilts. When I compared a similar quilt with other manufacturers the price was very similar.

    Thanks for you videos they're really helpful. I haven't gotten into winter camping yet but do a lot of backpacking in the spring/ summer/ fall seasons. Looking at quilts that might be right for me what do you think would be an appropriate temperature rating? 40? 50? For context, I'm mainly camping in the Northeast of the US, Rockies, PNW and have a trip in the Dolomites this summer

      20F is one of the most versatile quilt options. Will be good in most conditions all the way from 20ish F up to 70F.

    Thanks Justin
    I have followed your quilt journey avidly as I need a UK 4 season sleep system. But in the end I chickened out and pulled the trigger on a mountain equipment helium 600 sleeping bag which is £260 and weighs 1050g. There are 2 reasons for this: 1. UG quilts and Enlightened Equipment both take nearly 9 weeks and I need it sooner and 2. My concern that winter temps - which in the UK may occasionally stretch to -5 centigrade or a little more (I know - nothing compared to Canada!) are not suited to quilts.
    It was watching your recent video about using a quilt in cold weather that ironically persuaded me to go for the sleeping bag- you ended up using two quilts and I concluded that they both must weigh at least a kilo....so I thought why not just go for the bag...and avoid the danger of draughts. And in the summer, I will just open the zip for ventilation and bear the extra 500g that I might have saved by having just the one 3 season quilt.
    I suspect you will point out that you had actually withstood -17 C ...and that -5 C is OK for a quilt.
    I now await your admonishment. 😀😀

      Should have considered a cumulus 350 or 400 quilt. Buy from EU. Fantastic products

      Combined they do weigh just under a kilo, haha

    • @JustinOutdoors

      I have used my 20F quilt a lot in temperatures that get down to -4-6C, that's actually typical spring/summer nigh time weather in the mountains here! I'm happy as a clam with the quilt at those temps. But it is really all about what you're going to be happy with and everyone is different. The wait times for quilts is also a pain. Hopefully they get more stock product made for next year.

    Do you get clammy on the side where you are directly on the pad, with no insulation between you and the vinyl? I do not move much in my sleep and sometimes wake up with my back all sweaty from no air flow, even when I am cold.

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wear base layers, so no issues with getting clammy :)

    Hey Justin. What’s the biggest between synthetic and down fill. Thanks for an informative video.

    • @bruellaffenbaumd7159
      @bruellaffenbaumd7159 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically down has a better warmth to weight ratio and compresses better whereas synthetics excell in wet climates as they dont compress when they get wet

    • @JustinOutdoors
      @JustinOutdoors  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What Bruella said is the big difference! There are many others like durability and sustainability and I think it may be getting close to time for a video about it!
