I'm a self-taught artist who started drawing as a little child, so about 20 years ago, and let me tell you... you're insanely good at this. Way more than you realize it, you have no idea. You're starting at such a high level out of just observation, I don't think it will take you a whole year to accomplish your goals, I'll definitely be checking in on every video.
btw some of your practice I thought was footage from the tutorials you were watching until I realized it was you doing it. I think I've praised it all enough to make this comment weird, but I'm legitimately impressed, and I can't help it when it's a new artist growing. keep it up!

@@CarnageFenix for starters before going into digital art you should learn how to draw traditionally but if you already know how to great! so now seeing as you said you only have a phone(which I am going to assume doesnt have a stylus) all I can say is to just do it, find a drawing app(my recommendations are either ibis paint or medibang) and just draw with your finger and I know it may be hard and I know since I used to only draw with my finger (until I was gifted a phone that has a stylus) but as long as you kinda treat your finger as a pen of sorts you should be able to draw some bomb ass art

I'm a self taught artist myself( been drawing since I was a child but started to take it SERIOUSLY 3 years ago) and I gotta say I admire people who go out and really study shapes, color theory, lightning and all that because I don't do it as I'm pretty lazy. I draw one full on big piece every once a week and just watch ton of speedpaints but somehow I still improve little by little because even if you haven't drawn for weeks you still improve unconsciously because of all the new information you gathered from the internet. I think its pretty neat

As an artist who has been drawing for almost 10 years now, do keep one thing in mind that in most instances, your taste develops faster than your skills. You don't feel satisfied and end up comparing your self to others and there's nothing wrong with that. So you should give yourself some time and strive to improve. Even friendly competitions with your friends help a lot. So try to take baby steps
But apart from that you picked up the basics pretty quickly. Hope you have a great time and I am excited to see your journey

it'll be tough but it's doable! i'm starting to take my art more seriously after years of pausing, starting over, and other things coming up. i'm self-taught so it can definitely be difficult at times and feel like you're getting nowhere but just trust the process! just create and keep trying over and over again. it's a journey. do your best, enjoy the process, be nice to yourself and you'll go far, and even surprise yourself along the way :)

HB pencil: for a traditional pencil look
Monoline: for when you’re doing an animated art look (for the chibi art) and the colouring
Round brush: for the colour blocking!

it’s so fun to watch you progress so quickly in this video alone! you picked a good starting point with learning shapes. once you get more into anatomy, i highly recommend researching gesture drawing! while breaking the figure into shapes can help with structure, it can sometimes lead to a stiff pose. gesture drawing helps to keep you loose and focus on the energy of the pose so that you’re not sucked into the tiny details immediately! it also serves as a good warm up before long drawing sessions. i look forward to seeing you grow over the next year!

I think a very interesting part of this video is just how different headspaces can be for stuff like this, things that she found helpful/useful I might've found limiting or hard and vice versa, or things that she had a hard time drawing I found to be a lot easier, vice versa again. I think that this is a very important tip not only when it comes to art but with everything in general, something that works for someone else might not work for you, and something that might not work for them could be just what you need to get going. If someone has a method that worked great for them but it failed/made things feel harder when you tried it, then try something else! I've had a hard time not feeling discouraged after I try something that fails, feeling like the things I want to do just weren't meant for me, but when I kept searching I always found a method, and I hope all of you reading this can too!
Great video, thanks for all the insight and good luck on your art journey!

I would occasionally try again and again but I wasn't satisfied with the result and always looked down on myself for it. Watching this and hearing how we shared similar experiences really motivated me to pick up the pencil once again and put more effort and learn step by step rather than jumping to the end. Thank you dish, I know how hard it must have been to expose yourself this way but you really inspired me and many others to cross that line of "I can't" to "I can if I work for it!" I'm mostly self taught as well, and only had a few school art classes to go off of, so I really do understand where your reservations and struggles stem from. It's SO relatable, especially ot wanting to put the pen down, to keep adding/changing something.
Traditional art really helps with that urge sometimes, because there's no back button, you have to meticulously erase what you want to go back on, and it teaches you discipline with your art and lines overall.
That being said, you did so well your first time and attempts! You have a hidden talent for drawing, I think, because most people starting out are a lot more rough or stiff in their lines. I was especially impressed with your first attempt at breaking down the shapes of anatomy, THAT was brave for you to attempt, and it seriously looked good. All the support in the world for you to continue your journey learning how to create digital art! ❤

youre so cool. i really like this video, thank you for making this a series!! youre one of my favorite content creators ever, and to see you learning something ive been so passionate about for years. I started drawing and making characters passionately when i was like 8. For me, i dont like approaching things like they are an assignment, but rather “hey, i wanna do this and im gonna be the best at it!” and at 16 years old ive done professional work for people and gotten money for it. i hope this becomes a hobby and something fun! the really cool thing about art is that you dont have to have a god-given talent to be good, its just passion that moves you forward!!! love u dishhhh

Trust me, seeing how much I improved motivated me a lot but there's a lot of time I doubted myself and took a break (2 years to be exact) which I regretted so much. Seeing a lot of people improve so much in that time span made me feel really disappointed in myself so, that's where I tried to draw again but in my own pace. Seeing you improve more in the future is gonna be worth it!
    GOOD LUCK!

thank you so much for this, i can't even put into words how much you've inspired me. you're like the first youtuber ever to put the 'vulnerability' as you say it of learning something difficult on screen, especially art, so that other people can learn from it and be inspired!!!! it's great to see how someone else is learning it and i've also wanted to do art for quite a while, but i just either get too insecure and give up or just don't know what to do. i swear i'm gonna stick with u on this journey

This is so very interesting to me. I’ve been drawing my whole life, there was no method to it until I was about 12, but I loved it nonetheless. It’s really interesting to watch someone do this process as an adult with fully developed trouble shooting skills vs. me when I was little learning all these skills in a chaotic order, whenever they happened to pop up. 12 year old me didn’t understand planning ahead as a whole concept lol

As an artist, I know how much of a challenge it is to work hard to learn but get stumped, don't feel like drawing, get burnout, get disappointed, and all those negative emotions that come with not being satisfied with what you're making. BUT it is also very rewarding to see yourself improve over time. So I wish you the best in your endeavors and good luck! Looking forward to seeing your art journey from now.
Also, I LOVE that you're watching Quinton Reviews as you're drawing XD I did the same and he kept me entertained while drawing, and before I knew it, 8 hours passed by

Let's go, Dish!! I'm so happy to see people learn new skills & actively want to improve themselves!! I'm excited to be on this journey with you!! You got this, girl!!!
    Edit:
    - Make sure you stretch out & loosen up your arms & hands. Tight muscles will work against you. 💪
    - Try and do some warm ups like swirls & scribbles just to play around with colors, brushes & it allows you warm up your drawing arms~❤‍🔥
    - If just simple shapes seem boring try out simple shape characters/objects just like Kirby, Genshin slimes, maybe some round kawaii animals & items around the house that allow you to loosen up. 🐷🐱🐑🐹🐻

I was really good at drawing and I was so close on nailing the anatomy. But depression is a bitch and came to my life even if she ain't welcome 🥲Then when I was feeling a bit better, I tried drawing again and I was shocked that I wasn't able to draw properly anymore, its like I lost my 9 years of drawing skills and its pretty depressing but it is what it is🥲Tho that's why imma join you on this dish 😌I'm going to practice again while watching your drawing journey :3 We're gonna learn how to draw again betch😌💅

huge respect for your decision to film your process! as someone who is very critical of myself, allowing myself to make mistakes was always so difficult. that and practicing... if i can't master it in a week i'm quick to abandon it. this video inspired me to get back to the things i "gave up" on, so thank you and i wish you the best of luck!

As a highschool student who is self taught with no chances to take lessons, I can relate and as much as it was tough, I believe it was worth going through this first year of highschool, continuing to teach myself art, and it is fun to be part of the art kids of the school even though I am not officially in the art section, so what I'm trying to say is that even though it will be very difficult and it will feel like a video game with normal boss and final boss obstacles which need to be overcome, it will definitely be worth it in the end since it will definitely make you grow as a person even if you don't become a professional, so good luck on this journey!

5:46 YES, THIS IS SUCH AN ACCURATE STATEMENT. One time I found myself watching a whole video essay about genshin that lasted about 1-2 hours and a pokemon live stream that lasted 10 hours, a movie breakdown and review that lasted 40 minutes, a haunted house iceberg, someone explaining the tea that’s happening in the animation community and etc. it feels like you’re less alone while drawing and it’s really fun, even watching art streams while drawing would also be really good! Especially professional artists as you can pick up some habits they do on the way

When it comes to shading and values - my art teacher in college told me that there are 6 basic values EVERY drawing needs to have: the core shadow, base shadow, reflected light, midtone, light, highlight. After that most artists end up adding as many values as they can find but usually try to aim around 10 for quicker drawings and beginning drawings. The most values I've ever put in a single drawing is 18 and I was told that was probably how much experienced artists aim for in just normal drawings.
Also a basic bit of advice is to exaggerate your values as much as possible by making your core shadow as dark as you can and your highlights as light as you can
Also also, remember that no drawing is ever going to be perfect and that is a huge reason why people like paintings and drawings so much: it adds a humanistic perspective to it that we can empathize with

ive been drawing as long as i remember and the most important thing is to keep drawing; even if the first five, ten, one hundred things you make look bad, you shouldn't give up. just draw, draw everyday, draw on paper, draw at any point you can. challenge yourself and fail until it looks ok and then do it again until it looks good. it's rough making art that doesn't look like what you want it to but that's really the best thing you can do. youve got this!! only the fact that you decided to pick it up is a biiig step, so stay determined :)

this video kinda touched home for me & i'm sure a lot of other self taught artists as well !! i started out not knowing how to draw at all & basically learned out of spite as well, just to say i CAN do it too !! & it is super hard to not get discouraged or intimidated by wanting to create things that are out of your artistic ability or comparing yourself with more experienced artists,, but i think it's super important to remember that art journeys are not a linear process!! there will be days where your art may not be working out the way you expected, but that's okay ! & breaks from art are just as important as staying dedicated to practicing, which i think has a lot to do with why so many people find art so daunting at times. it's better to take a break and draw when you genuinely want to rather than draw for the sake of practice,, as long as you're enjoying yourself & what you create, your skills will improve naturally! good luck dish !!! :))

Ahhh yesss I am so happy you are jumping on the art train! I'm an artist I free for 11 years (drew seriously for 4) and I recommend that you also make a Pinterest board with the art style you want to eventually get to (like a main idea so like manga is a style or digitail painting or cartoonism or focus on creatures or plants or scapes or even semi realism)! It helps sooooo much esp in the future!

your content always makes me happy, but this-- that inspired me so much!
I've been drawing for all my (short) life, but for the past 3-4 years it's really hard for me... because I'm afraid of failures ig and also during my study period in university I can't draw as much as I want. I've started some new pieces last month and they're far from title "done".
but now, seeing you really overcoming yourself to do what you wanted to do is so incredible ; - ; after watching this here on youtube and stream on twitch I feel so motivated to move on.
and I also have to say that you're doing more than great already! the flower at 17:10 is so beautiful, the colors are so pleasant to see! 🥺I went "oooh" when I saw it---
thank you so much for being here and doing new type of content for yourself & for your channel!

Yeah I'll show myself outta the door for that one.
But what you said in the beginning resonated so much for me! I hate being bad at things (although that is natural and all a part of the process) but having someone watch me being bad at things is such a horrifying thought to me. So thank you so much for sharing your journey, I'm excited to see where you get in the span of one year!

I've been making art for a long time now, but I mostly draw patterns and other abstract things. I've always been very interested in learning how to actually draw but every time I pick up my pencil and try I find myself giving up because I'm frustrated with how it looks. Watching the progress you've made over a week to be able draw a self portrait feels inspiring in a way I dont think ive ever felt before. after I watched this for the first time I feel like I might actually be able to draw if I try hard enough. Thank you for that.

drawing is something i've loved doing my whole life. it's just that for the past year or two, it's been stagnant and i feel like i've hit a point where i feel like i've lost the ability to draw and everything i do isn't good. lately i've been trying to get back into it, starting from drawing every day (currently at day 3 and hopefully it keeps up). seeing this really inspires me to keep drawing. treating my work a bit kindly is a whole can of worms, but hopefully i can regain the drive because art is really something special to me
