I’m sorry to hear you have the DCM genes. My doberman was tested twice for DCM in her life and both tests came back showing negative for both genes but at the second test she was already diagnosed with DCM. She slipped out of my hands in 2 months! She was gone at the age of 4. European champ. Bloodline offspring….left me heartbroken!
That’s really kind of you to let your breeder know Arlos results. The fact that you’re advocating for future dog buyers (from that breeder, anyways) is a really nice gesture😊
@@ncangieThat is true for my breeder. They do for the parents of course but they also do for the puppies before puppy selection happens/before puppy goes to his forever home. Makes the puppies a bit more expensive but I appreciate my breeder doing that.
John, I used the same DNA company as you, and my Doberman pup came back having 1 DCM-1 marker and 1 DCM-2 marker - making her at "high risk" for getting DCM at some point in her life. But, I'm not going to spend time worrying about it, as that would ruin the time that I have with her. As Embark points out, not all dogs with these markers end up getting DCM. Bottom line: I feed her well - I exercise her every day - I give her lots of attention and love - I take her to the vet - and, I'm not going to worry about things that aren't within my control.
Hi John, I recently lost my 3 yr old dobie to DCM. I'm retired and she was my world. I couldn't stand doing nothing all day so I started looking for another. I tried to get a rescue, that didn't work out. I live in RI and we only have 3 reputable breeders here. Prices starting at $3000. Finally found a puppy in MD under $2000 and the breeder brought her to me if I paid the car rental! Well I had her 5 days, almost 9 weeks old when the 21 yr old female next door let her sister's pit bull loose, knowing the dog would attack my puppy. Thankfully her brother ran right out and grabbed her in a bear hug from behind. My puppy ( Byrdie) was physically ok, but now everytime she sees a large dog she screams and pees herself. How can I help her overcome this? She is 4 months now and nothing has changed.
John, congratulations on this video. One of the best ever in your channel. Your are doing a huge contribution to the Doberman breed. I'm spreading your channel throughout the doberman community I am connected to on social networks. I've been wondering about DNA testing my Doberman for a while but now I will definitely do it.
Thank you so much Ewerton. I love hearing that it may help some people. You know, even if it doesn't get the same views or attention as puppy videos on my channel, I really feel passionate that this is one of the most important videos I've done. I will say that I put more work into this video (and the guide that goes with it) than I have on any other project so far. Soooo much research, my head still hurts! Haha. But like I said this topic is a passion of mine. I really feel more owners need to test their dogs. For the good of their own dog and Dobermans in general. Anyway, I really appreciate the support, you have no idea how much it means to me! Don't be a stranger in the comments section!
Doberman Planet I have a question for you I’m getting 2 puppies at the same time can they share a crate together while there young or would it be beneficial to separate them they would come from the same litter
John, I feel like you should win an award for everything you've done. I brought home a Doberman as my first dog ever and I can not tell you how much you have saved me. So organized, so thorough, and as OCD as I am about getting things right. Thanks for being a great person. The Doberman breed owes a lot to you.
As the owner of my 7th Doberman, I have LOVED watching your videos! And even though I have lived with a Doberman since the '70s, I still have learned alot from you. And had great fun watching all the things I learned the "Hard Way". But the best thing I have learned from you is about the Embark DNA Testing. One of my past Dobermans died from DCM (age 9.5 years), and another died from Degenerative Myelopathy (age 12.5 years). So when I first watched this video I immediately used your link to order a test (Purebred & Health). Came back 100% Doberman Pinscher ( which he damn well better have been for what I paid for him), and much to my relief a clean bill of DNA tests with the exception of a low ALT which he is scheduled at the vet to get a baseline ALT blood test. Thank you for everything you do for Doberman Pinschers...By far, the best dogs in the world!!!
I just have to say I love your channel so much. I am bringing home a doberman puppy in a month and your channel was EXACTLY what I needed. I spent so much time before I found your channel going all over youtube to try to find useful information, and while I did find some, it just wasn't enough/specific to the breed. Also, the way you do your videos is so great: you don't put loud distracting music in the background that covers what you are saying. You cover everything that the titles of your videos suggests AND you go into great detail. And you just seem like such a great guy in general. You and your channel have helped so much, and really solidified my decision to bring home a doberman. Thanks for everything, you have a new subscriber! Notifications are on :)
What an amazing comment Henrodd! Thank you so much I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking a minute to leave this comment. It really gives me a boost to hear that I'm helping people. Honestly I just keep thinking to myself "what information do I WISH someone had given me when I was starting with my first Doberman?" and I try to answer those things. That and my user's comments.... so if there is ever a topic you want, just drop a comment and that'll help make sure I'm making videos useful to you! Anyway, welcome to the channel! Please don't be a stranger in the comments section! :-)
Here’s a thought ... to verify the results, get another test kit. Register it in another male dog’s name and see if the results are different. It should be the exact same! If it’s not, then the test is unreliable! This would be my first step before getting upset or worrying about the previous results. If it is the same, then I would go back to the breeder for his results. Just a thought but this is definitely what I would do first.
Please understand these test kits are very expensive good luck to the person that can afford to do twice Embarq does not kid around believe me they’re testing is spot on
Surely you’d have to do a minimum of three tests if you’re going to see if these tests are reliable? If you did two and they were both different: how would you know which one is accurate and which one is unreliable, you see what I mean? And buying three tests is probably quite expensive in total
@@delanelauderdale9099 i have the money and would throw it all away for such thing. Unfortunately as far as I know the tests are only for the U.S. I am correct?
The DNA testing Kit I used on Arlo was from Embark. You can use it on any breed dog at any age, gives you a ton of info. Here's the link to the one I used: ➡ See the test kit here (Affiliate Link): shrsl.com/3mx9k ➡ Coupon Code "DOBERMANPLANET" will get you $50 off! ➡ The DNA Guide for Checking Results: www.dobermanplanet.com/dna
@@allisoncox5750 Thanks for bringing this up! I'm getting the code renewed now... It should be working in a day or so! Sorry about that! Either one will work and they test for the same things they just present the results differently. I'd do the purebred one if you have a full-blooded Doberman because you'll care less about their breed identification information and more about just easily seeing the other test results.
My puppy is almost 5 months now. And I definitely want to purchase the same test. I waited for the litter to be born to get my puppy because both parents (VetGen tested) were negative for both DCM 1 and 2 markers. While this is not a guarantee it is the best you can do to try and eliminate the heartache of seeing your beloved dog drop dead before your very eyes. My Maggie had just turned 8 when she did just that. I knew her father had died from DCM 3 years earlier. It was a shock to the breeder and after he called and told me I worried but she had no symptoms, my vet said she seemed fine. At 8 I thought well maybe she would not get it . Two months later she died. That was last Nov. I almost thought I would not get another Doberman as the disease has become so prevalent. But that didn’t last. Once you have a Doberman.....that’s everything you want in a dog so I was determined to find out all I could and try to minimize the risks by choosing the parents who were both clear. After seeing your story I want to test my girl and hopefully that will confirm she is negative for both markers. DCM 1 positive marker is not bad. DCM 2 is the majority of Dog who get the disease. They feel there is another mutation involved also as there have been rare cases of DCM with dogs who were genetically clear. But there isn’t any guarantees. I will keep you posted on my results. Hope Arlo lives a long and healthy life.
Hello 👋 Susan. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Thank you for the work you put into Dobermans. All of us that know that Dobies are special appreciate it. Waiting for my new pup coming in a few months. Peace and Love
Congrats!!! That's really excited! Take care of your pup and most importantly keep him (or her) happy and healthy! Thank you so much for your kind words, I really do appreciate it.
Wanted to thank you for your videos especially allowing us on your journey with Arlo. This video is by far the greatest leap for the Doberman community. Bringing this issue out in the open on your site and allowing us on your journey with Arlo may well be your most significant videos ever!
Hello John....I've been watching you for over a year. I do love all your input and the "guest" hosts too! I DID make use of your EMBARK discount and got my results back recently. My dog is a Euro female and 22 months old. I selected the green purebred kit. The entire test came back with all GREENS except for 1 test. The DCM1 test showed a marker. I guess I shouldn't complain She did come from a reputable breeder here in FL. The COI wasn't as low as I might have expected but it was a 46. The breeder told me all of her breeding dogs are hand selected and I think she said they were screened before being shipped from Europe. Either way, she sounded really dedicated to her dogs and their puppies. I had the lengthy interview that others have had with their breeder before they were "allowed" to buy a dog. I have noi regrets and would recommend this breeder to anyone around. My dog Khaleesi is a great dog! Mike
I like Dobermans, Golden retriever, Labradors, and German Sheperd but I like Dobermans best so, because of you I know all the knowledge of Dobermans thankyou very much.
Arlo's daddy is the milk man. In just ordered 2 test. I have two Doberman puppies coming and I'll be ready. Is there a specific age that testing is recommended by?
Thank you so much for sharing this! The amount of work you put into this video and the website is so amazing. That takes a lot of hard work! Keep up the great job 😊
Thank you Jamie that really means so much to hear. This DNA health testing topic is one I'm really passionate about because I hate to see the heartbreak in owners when one passes unexpectedly. Just so horrible. So it was easy for me to go "all out" on this and collect as much data as possible to help others. But yeah, we can get SO much information now from a stupid little cheek swab. Haha. It's amazing.
Just ordered our DNA kit for our 1yr old, Petey. John, your channel is amazing! The info you provide is invaluable and I am so thankful. I am sharing the heck out of your channel on all of the Doberman social media I participate with. You have an answer to everything. Thanks so much!
Missy your comment just made my day. I really cant thank you enough for the faith you have in me! It seriously means so much! Oh, and good luck with the DNA kit! Remember that even of it comes back with any "red exclamation marks" in the results it's not always as bad as it seems. So don't let it freak you out! 😁👍
The way you make it easy for us to check are dogs DNA is super appreciated. Being able to test are dogs and go through the process is made pretty easy due to the work you put in with Doberman information and dedication. Much love and big ups to you 🤙🏼💪🏼
I ordered one for our new red puppy last night! I'll let you know the results! Her parents were tested for everything except DCM 2! So *fingers crossed* Thanks again for the coupon code!
Wow. This made me cry. I've fallen in love with Dobies, but that DCM scare is terrifying. I've been combing the Dobie pages looking for this information. Thank you for all that you do. This all started with Ruby, and I have a Pit in his late years, and I've been wanting a Dobie, but the heartbreak I've seen Charles have to bear is nearly too hard for me, and she is His dog 💔You really cover the bases on this channel, and by the time I'm ready, I'll be confident enough to take on a Dobie. I have to know in my heart of hearts I'm doing it right before I do. I believe they are commitment, much like my horses. I'm so glad to have found your channel. You are awesome!🐾
Hello 👋 Jennifer. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Simply amazing. Your channel and the knowledge you seek is outstanding and amazing. I’m doing my homework on the Dobermans before I get mine. Your channel has given me the confidence to be the best Owner for my Dobie. I’m just a sponge when it comes to your channel. Keep up the great work. Thanks for your research and work you put in so we can be the best and responsible owners. Be well!
Hello 👋 Janet. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Thank you Doberman Planet for your wonderful work with Doberman’s and all your fantastic videos. I just lost my beautiful 8 year old Dobie ‘Brandi’ to DCM. The diagnosis and her loss has left me devastated. I watch your videos all the time to console myself . If and when I get another Doberman ( I just adore the breed as you do ) I will surely follow your guidance . Thank you so much 🙏🏽🙋♀️
I love your channel so much! I’m looking into getting a doberman in the next few years (after I’ve saved up of course!) and it is so helpful to see how you’re doing with Arlo’s development as a puppy and different things to do at different stages in his growth. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of having a doby pup! Keep up the good work man! Arlo sure is growing fast alongside your son :) They are so cute together
Hi John, Another amazing video! Packed with detailed and well researched information ! Thank you so much for your contributions. I was wondering if it's possible for you to share the name of your breeder. I've watched almost all of your videos including choosing breeder and also through your site I've gone through the list of breeders in my area. I can send you a private email/message with the details of my search for breeder without success. Regardless, you are awesome, keep up the great work!
This is a fantastic website. Awesome video. I wish Doberman Pinscher Clubs would require breeders to post the results of the puppies' parents before breeding. It would help the breed a lot.
I’ve heard that SOME of these dna genetics tests aren’t always 100% accurate. Do you think it’s possible that the 2 copies could have been inaccurate...
I've never hear that. My understanding is it's "digital" data and not analog. Meaning it's a string of letters read by a computer that matches it up with other known strings of letters. I think it's pretty hard for it to be inaccurate. Although who knows... it WOULD be interesting to run the test again just to see.
@@dobermanguy9437 Do you have evidence to support your claim, or a formal education in DNA testing that would lead you to this conclusion, or are you just spouting your feelings?
@@glennm8337 I'm not an expert at DNA testing but I know a lady in Poland her Doberman live to be 20 years old and she never did any of that stuff in my opinion DNA testing is not 100% yeah that's my opinion if you take good care of your dog and keep him intact give him a good diet and plenty of exercise there's a good chance you'll have him for many many years that's my opinion also why do many dogs that remain intact have less health problems when they are older that's another topic but that's a fact and that's been proven a lot of dogs when they get older and they were fixed when they were young tend to have a lot more health problems than intact dogs
Found your video very helpful n informative. Told my friends n relatives about your video n DNA testing. Your video has spread throughout the community so much so that other non-Doberman owners are also interested in this test. Are there test kits for non-Doberman breeds too ??? Looking forward to your next video. Thanks
John, this video is incredible! I too had questions about my Embark testing kit. Sorry to hear about Arlo. Interesting, huh? Well, Blue is 31% COI, which is great. Bianca had the same one as Arlo. They are great and having a litter in 6 weeks! Hope to talk to you soon!
Hey John, great video! Could you possibly do a video about everything we need to know about registration papers? Like what AKC papers look like, how to know if you have limited or full registration, and maybe just going through what everything should look like? It’s very useful information to have. Thank you 🤗
I read that DNA testing is not infallible with regards to DCM testing. The best test for DCM is a 24 hour holter (sp?) test, AFAIK. You probably know this, but I just thought I'd say. Thanks for the video. Arlo is looking great. Looking forward to seeing how you handle his teenage years ;)
So glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah so the test is infallible when it comes to detecting if the gene mutation is present... but yeah... that doesn't mean your dog has or even will ever have DCM. Which I think may be what you were getting at. Which is totally right. The holter monitor/EKG, sonogram, etc is definitely the best way to confirm if your dog has actually developed DCM. I do appreciate you posting this though because it clears some things up for people who believe a positive result on the DNA means that your dog does have DCM.
Thank you so much Kallia. Cooper passed a few months back from a genetic liver disease. One of the reasons Doberman health is so important to me. Miss him dearly.
@@DobermanPlanet I am so sorry, i loved watching him in your videos. I have one doperman as well, she's the best! Thank you for showing everyone how someone should take care of their doperman puppy. He was great!
Your videos are impressive, you turn the quarantine into a science study including a website analysis. Detailed, analytic, engaged and educational. I think some profession/startup lost a big talent in you. You are a gift to doberman owners, but look wider and benefit even more from your youth, energy and talent.
Hi John, Hello Arlo you handsome boy😄 John, first I would like to say to you is; your a God send to our Great Doberman Babies that we love so much! You walk the talk and then some, continually educating yourself near blind. You’re a true advocate with such passion and love for the breed that so many of us choose to make part of our families. I agree with pjm0621 that idea sounds like a good one. Also, I’d just like to tell you a quick story about the best dog I’ve ever been owned by🥰 32 years ago a neglected male Doberman who wasn’t wanted originally was placed in the pot during a poker game. He was won by someone else who didn’t want him either but thought he could sell him. I was working as a vet tech then and happened to be working that Saturday morning. Two yrs prior I had to put down my female Doberman, who was also my very first Doberman😭 Ok, enough tears. This dufus male Doberman jumps out of the truck he was in, dodging traffic on a busy street as the guy was in a store trying to sell him🤬. A client of our Vetinariay Hospital day this and threw a leash around him and some cheese helped. The guy said he didn’t want him so she brought him to our office. My coworkers knew he was coming but didn’t tell me, they knew, I, deep down really wanted another Doberman. His name SAGE was chosen a year prior to me knowing him. He arrived, he was 8-10 months old, emaciated, and had the worst case of flea dermatitis infection. I kept saying well if he don’t have this or that wrong I might consider it. My Dr. Ran every test he could at the time. Except for the skin, tape worms and being skinny he was in perfect health🙏🏻 I was so careful of prevention of bloat all his life!! He grew to be a big beautiful boy who loved everyone. At 11 yo he started coughing a little, it got worse when we all were away for Christmas and New Years in the mountains. We took him to the University of Tennessee Veterinary School of Medicine where he was diagnosed with Cardiomyopathy with A-fib and CHF😭 I was loosing my boy!! I didn’t want to drive home from TN to FL with my Sage gone, wrapped in a blanket. Plus my two sons were 7&8 yo. So I opted to pull the fluid off his lungs, stabilize his heart rhythm until we could see his vet. TN told me he had about 9 weeks to live with his medication, but exertion could exacerbate his CHF and fill his lungs again🥺 I kept him on his meds 💰💰💰💰💰 WORTH IT thank God I had the money🙏🏻 I promised myself and Sage I wouldn’t bring him in and out of a CHF crisis anymore and I wanted him to have fun, and let me know when you’re tired. I didn’t want to treat him like an egg. He didn’t run around as much outside, but he played with my 3yo female Doberman that Sage raised and a 7yo male poodle rescue, who thought he was a Doberman too lol 😄 that we were blessed with along the way as well. Sage still loved to chase lizards. Until one Sunday he couldn’t catch one and came back to me with bluish gums and the start of CHF. He told me he was ready to go be with God🙏🏻 This was not 9 weeks later he had been given, it was almost a year later!!! He died of a Great Big Heart💖💝💞💓💗 by beloved Boy Sage. 12 years old is really a long life, even without DCM with A-fib and CHF. That’s my story about my baby boy Sage. I hope someone can get something from my story🥰
This is a very good idea! Even if your dog tests clear, you can have peace of mind yet if they test positive for something you have a heads up. Arlo is looking very handsome btw ♥️.
Thank you Vanessa! I agree with you. No use in sticking your head in the sand when a simple test can tell you some pretty amazing things. Plus there are some conditions that you can influence for the better if you catch them early!
Hello 👋 Charlette. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
I've been wanting to do this since my Dobie is from the shelter. I haven't had money to spare but I've unexpectedly come into some and since you have a coupon code.... 🤔
Yeah it's just so important to do in my opinion. Especially with all the things that can be going on in Dobies in current generations. May all your results be positive ones! :-)
Oh and check out your dog's COI number too in the results. That is SO COOL that we can get that number since it's linked (indirectly of course) to lifespan. Just a crazy amount of insight into your dog.
@@DobermanPlanet not just Dobermans, in my opinion. My family has lost 2 dogs to cancer and 1 to bloat all before or at age 7 and of different breed mixes, so when I decided to get a dog for myself, I decided I wanted to do as much as possible to prevent that sort of thing, which is why I feed raw. I want to know as much as possible about my dog. I know there's no guarantees and the tests may not be 100% accurate and whatnot, but the more info, the better, for me. I get pretty paranoid 😅
CheshireKat I’m sorry for the premature losses of your three dogs. It’s hard to lose them no matter the time, but GD is a tough one to deal with. It’s unexpectedly sudden and often the last moments if caught are spent in chaos for all involved as you seek emergency care. Most times we never get the chance to say goodbye. I do understand the paranoia and walking on eggs trying to do everything just right to prevent this from happening. I just read an article about “Dog cancer rising at alarming rates” Its up 58% from 10 years ago. It’s sickens me, it’s said that 66% of canine cancer is preventable. I like you am a big believer that the toxic food is the biggest culprit!! I’ve seen the difference in my dog when I started homemade food. Good for you switching to a healthier food, That takes time and commitment, but we love them and their worth it 💖🙏🏻If you don’t mind could you please share with me the raw diet you use? What kind of dog and what size are the portions? I’m always looking for education on what and how much people give their dogs! Environmental conditions, lifestyle changes, “advances” in medicine has all shown to have an effect on DNA over time, all were mentioned as well. It used to be normal for a large dog to live an average of 12-15 yrs and more, 50 plus yrs ago and more. Hmmmm. !!!!!
Can you please make a video on how you are posting arlos ears! We are getting a puppy in 3 weeks and I can not decide on which method is the best!! Please help!
My wife and I are in the process of looking for our first Dobermann. We're based in the UK and after watching all of your videos we've found your channel incredibly helpful. Following on from this video we contacted the KC UK registered breeder that we'd reserved a puppy with and asked if DNA testing was part of their DCM identification process. They responded that the science for this was inaccurate and then they told us to go and find a dog elsewhere! We honestly asked very politely and are quite taken aback by the response. We're now unsure what to do. Do we try and build bridges with the current breeder or look elsewhere and start our hunt all over again? What would you do John and fellow Doberman Planet viewers?
This was some awesome info! I just lost my female doberman on Friday May 1 to hemangiosarcoma on her spleen, She would have been 10 yrs old Aug 16th. It was a complete shock to us. I didn't know they had this test and I am researching breeders for my next Dober girl and I WILL get this test. Thank you so much for all that you do! This breed is the best and breeders need to be diligent about saving the breed!
Hi John... Just found your videos here and I have to say, your information is awesome and you present beautifully! Thank you! Couple questions if I may? First of all, keep us all informed about the DNA differences here... Seems suspiciously weird. Did they maybe mix Arlo's DNA up with someone else? The repeat test others suggested here might be the best to know.... Question... How long did it take to get the test back from the time you mailed? Question2... Do you know any reputable breeders in the Western NY region or even in Canada Toronto? Thanks again!
Found this video from the resource page you created. Lots of great info. Thank you. Question; Is this an American service or is it international? Will I be able to use the prepaid envelope to send in the sample or would I have to make sure the postage is covered as I live outside the CONUS?
Just purchased the test ! I’m so excited! I have a European Doberman imported from Romania... working on getting all her health testing done and if all is good I will be breeding her sometime in 2021
Seriously, the amount of work you put into this should be commended! Here's a question though, what happens if your dog DOES test for some of these health concerns? Are there precautions you can take, or are they just destined to have the issue regardless of any precautions. Thanks for this great channel John!
Thank you John really like when you mentioned that you are independent on your opinion. This sounds interesting 🤔 have to think if I really want to know so much details but that’s just me. Maybe one day if I do I will definitely come back and use your kit. 🥰👍🏻
Thanks Lina! Yeah sometimes it does really feel like information overload with how good these genetic test kits are getting. You can learn SO much about your dog, it's really crazy. But honestly, I'd rather know than not personally. Especially because some things you can influence if you know that your dog is susceptible to it on a genetic level.
Hi! I love your videos! They have helped me prepare for my puppy so much. Most of the stuff I got for him was from your recommendations haha. I just have one question if you could please let me know. How do you tape Arlo's ears and what tape do you use? I have tried countless times to look it up but I can only find kits and tutorials for the total posting of the ears and my puppy would have already gone through that phase. If you could please let me know it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!!!
Hi 🙋♀️ my husband and I love your Channel. I recently did the embark test and have mailed it out as of Friday. How long did you have to wait before you got the results? I’m almost scared to see what the results will show 🙏🙏🙏
We rescued our dog and she looks just like a Doberman but there was no denying she was a mix with some breed of hound. So my daughter purchased Embark and we found out she is exactly 50% Treeing walker hound and 50% Doberman. She inherited the best traits from both breeds and is a joy to have as a companion.
Hello John am in love with your videos. A Doberman is my dream dog and I was wondering where can u buy a European Doberman I just can’t find one hope you can help me out and keep killing it 🙌🙌
Hi John, thank you for making these videos to share your knowledge, experiences, and research with us. As a first time dog owner and a Doberman owner, I have learnt a lot from your experiences shared. I wanted to ask you if you know whether the embark test reveals food or nature related allergies in your dog, or give a good idea that I can take further with the vet? I greatly appreciate any feedback you might have. To give you the history of my Doberman: My dobie Hugo will turn 1 y/o in another week and I had him since he was 4wks old. Not too long ago Hugo started having some skin issues that at first looked like mosquito bite bumps. Everyone talked about how shiny and sleek his red and rust coat looked, which is now punctuated with tiny stops showing skin, from scratches and irritation. His vet tried several sessions of antibiotics, suspecting food allergies by 3rd. Hugo has always had home cooked fresh meals, mostly baked or grilled protein(chicken, meat, fish), with raw or steamed veggies. Towards the last 3 months we were also giving raw eggs. He has always been a very picky eater, small eater. Feeding him sometime felt like a dentist visit. Hugo has now been on Royal Canin Hydrolyzed protein adult HP prescription diet for nearly 2 months. He hardly wants to eat, and even though the allergies got better towards the beginning, looks like it increases too once in a while. Sorry about the super long comment, but I value your opinion and would greatly appreciate any feedback you might have.
Hy. Very interesting video. Do you know if this test could be done on a rough collie. Or do you know a test recommended for this breed? Thank you and good job!!!
Hello 👋 Mary. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Very informative and good research. My Dobies are adopted. I think investing in a DNA test is a good idea in my case. I'd love to know what to watch for with regard to their health. Good Job!
I totally agree with you! Honestly, with the state of the Doberman breed right now I really think more owners should be testing their dogs. It's one of the few major tools we have to make a difference with our dogs and we should be using it. There are many disorders that an owner can have a positive impact on if they knew about them early and a DNA test can very often do that. Check out my link... and I was even able to get some coupon codes for my viewers to make it a bit cheaper (see the codes just below the links in the video description).
So actually, this is possible in genetics. During meiosis, generally, there's a separation of chromatids. Generally, that means one set of genes from Mom and one set from Dad. However, things don't always separate so perfectly. During the stages of meiosis there is more than 1 replication and separation steps. In Arlo's case, the mom, had only 1 copy, and the dad none of the aberrant gene. Well, during meiosis 1 and meiosis 2 that copy makes 2 copies of itself and then separates to make 2 new cells each with 1 copy. This is how gamete cells(sex cells) make more of themselves. Mom makes more eggs, Dad makes more sperm. Well, if after replicating the dna, during separation of the replicated cells both copies can get pulled to one cell leaving the other without a copy. That's how you get trisomy 21 (down syndrome). In other words, 1 of Mom's cells(eggs ) after replication has two copies of the chromosome carrying that specific aberrant gene and 1 cell has none for that specific gene. This is called non-disjunction. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondisjunction. Well, it can happen that Mom contributed an egg with 2 copies of that chromosome, and Dad, also had a non-disjunction event in which he created a cell (sperm) with no copies of that chromosome. So he contributed none for that specific gene and mom contributed both copies. Inbreeding tends to lend itself to these replicative errors more commonly. As discussed in the video, inbreeding is common with the breed. This shows that as long as you keep using carriers in breeding, you're still not breeding out the aberrant gene, particularly with heavy inbreeding. Therefore, it's possible to have this aberrant gene even with responsible breeding by using carriers and having a high incidence of nondisjunction from inbreeding. But not using carriers in a small pool of donors (aka purebreds), means more inbreeding and more genetic mutations and anomalies. Hope this helps.
I had a blue Male that had a heart murmur before I got him had the vet double check him before I got him and said it was gone. At a little more than 7 yrs old my girl and I came home form Valentines dinner to find Rudy dead on the couch laying in a position he usually slept in. It's been about a year and a half and I still dont have it in me to get another one even though I want to. I loved my doberman.
I'm so sorry to hear about your loss Jason. Hopefully one day you'll feel ready to get another, but don't do it if you aren't ready. Only you know when the right time is. Yeah, from my understanding "heart murmurs" in young puppies is a pretty normal thing and they grow out of it. Even healthy pups that live long lives.
My heart goes out to you. I understand how hard it is to loose your best friend from DCM. I almost chose to go with another breed because after researching Doberman DCM it became clear that this disease is threatening the very foundation of the breed. And yet I missed my girl so much. My new puppy is 5 months old now. Her parents are both clear. I will test her with this test to know for sure what her dna says. But I had to get another Dobe. Once you ve had one....
An update to my first response to your post. I received back her dna/genetic results and am so happy to know she is clear for DCM 1 & 2! While I know that there are no guarantees as there could be other factors for developing DCM, diet, environmental etc. I at least know she is clear. That is all you can do at this point with what is known to avoid DCM
Definitely! Might be a bit since he's having to buy a bunch of DNA kits, test them all, send them off and wait for results. But I'll definitely let you guys know when I do!
Hi I have an 8 month Doberman puppy and since a month he would just get up and pee in this crate. How do I work with this situation.. he used to give me signed before but not nothing
Hello 👋 Leslie. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
I cannot seem to find an American Doberman that is DCM1 and DMC2 clear ????????????? I have been looking for months and there is always one variant that is not clear, is it really that rare to find both DCM1 and DCM2 clear ?
I think so too Debbie! I haven't been paying attention to recent developments in DNA testing myself so I had no idea how in-depth it is now. Very cool!
HELLO JOHN, First, great video as always. Very informative. Secondly, let us remember, no matter what a test reveals, we’re never going to love our Doberman any less, they are second only to our own offspring 😁. Finally, it does give one pause to consider the “tightness” of the Breed and presents thoughts to looking at a universal solution. That’s why your site is most important, I hope Breeders are watching. To insure the future of our Doberman’s it’s obvious to this layman there needs to be some changes to insure Doberman’s for the future. Breeding for only “Best in Class” does have some pit falls. All creatures on Earth need diversity in their gene pool to remain healthy. Thanks again, Grace says hi to Arlo, She’s a flirt this month, she’s in season 😂😂😂
ROBERT! What's up brother?! I am so glad you're back! How'd giving up social media for lent go? Did you resist? Haha. Anyway, I totally agree with you. That breeding only for Best in Class stuff does bother me a lot too. It leads to such a genetic bottleneck and really hurts more than it helps in my opinion. Hi to Grace! Haha.
Doberman Planet ... John what a blast from the past going silent. I’ve actually recovered from the addiction and only go to “friends” sites with worthy info. DP is on my list 😎 Grace says Hey and I really appreciate the videos and the news letter, which might be the real gold nugget with all it’s information. Give Arlo a hug. Oh btw...I had a health issue requiring me to house Grace at my daughters home for 5 days. Seriously, it could have been a disaster, but they both are animal people. Lots of lessons learned, preparation, familiarization, feeding habits, and the list goes on. No to mention the stress Grace went through. She’s back now and we’re good to go. 😎
This is scary and sad. I am a German Shepherd guy. I lost my boy to an aggressive cancer back in July. As much as I love GSDs, I don't think I can go through that it again. (It's common in the breed). I am or was very interested in a Doberman. This DCM at 58% is scary. Those are not good odds. After watching your video, like you said, even if your careful, DCM can pop up. I am now afraid to get a Doberman because of that. Losing a dog to Cancer, DCM, or DME seems to be especially hard. It really stinks that two of the best breeds out there have these issues. I wonder if an F1 Doberman Doodle would help eliminate some of these genes with hybrid vigor?
I’m sorry to hear you have the DCM genes. My doberman was tested twice for DCM in her life and both tests came back showing negative for both genes but at the second test she was already diagnosed with DCM. She slipped out of my hands in 2 months! She was gone at the age of 4. European champ. Bloodline offspring….left me heartbroken!
That’s really kind of you to let your breeder know Arlos results. The fact that you’re advocating for future dog buyers (from that breeder, anyways) is a really nice gesture😊
Was thinking the same
Most breeders use the Embark DNA test before breeding them.
Same with my dog he has a copy of each and type 1 vWD
@@pameladenny4733Bring her around lots of other dogs that you know are friendly. Dont go to dog parks if you dont want to risk anothwr bad experience.
What did you decide to feed her and did you mix it up?
@@pameladenny4733 Hopefully you decided to get training to help with that trauma it is the best way to go, time and patience
Did cooper die
Doberman Planet I have a question for you I’m getting 2 puppies at the same time can they share a crate together while there young or would it be beneficial to separate them they would come from the same litter
Judith Raji yes he did die 😪
@@roba168 Please look into littermate syndrome, if you did get 2 from the same litter. 😉
John, I feel like you should win an award for everything you've done. I brought home a Doberman as my first dog ever and I can not tell you how much you have saved me. So organized, so thorough, and as OCD as I am about getting things right. Thanks for being a great person. The Doberman breed owes a lot to you.
Ong I'm sure he's helped many others as well, including me as someone who has both German shepherd and doberman pinscher
100% agree. Getting my first dobie in 1 week! His videos have probably saved me from so many potholes and turns! 👍🏻
@@CXLV101 Maybe one of the Doberman groups, associations, etc would be willing to assist with the cost of the tests...
@@delanelauderdale9099 i have the money and would throw it all away for such thing. Unfortunately as far as I know the tests are only for the U.S. I am correct?

➡ Coupon Code "DOBERMANPLANET" will get you $50 off!
➡ The DNA Guide for Checking Results: www.dobermanplanet.com/dna
Does the results also tell you if your dog is American or European?
Do you have a renewed discount code for 2023? Also should we pick the purebred test or the general dna test?
@@allisoncox5750 Thanks for bringing this up! I'm getting the code renewed now... It should be working in a day or so! Sorry about that! Either one will work and they test for the same things they just present the results differently. I'd do the purebred one if you have a full-blooded Doberman because you'll care less about their breed identification information and more about just easily seeing the other test results.
cool!

My puppy: "I just took a DNA test turns out I'm 100% that bitch!"

Hi John,

@@DobermanPlanet You probably should to know for sure.
Exactly they're not accurate and a waste of money good comment
@@dobermanguy9437 Do you have evidence to support your claim, or a formal education in DNA testing that would lead you to this conclusion, or are you just spouting your feelings?

Having the gene does not mean the disease will present itself. Its only a risk indicator.
Your videos are really informative

Thank you Vanessa! I agree with you. No use in sticking your head in the sand when a simple test can tell you some pretty amazing things. Plus there are some conditions that you can influence for the better if you catch them early!
Very informative and interesting. I didn't even know this test existed. Thank you for showing us this. 👍🐾
Trying to figure out where you got Arlo from, but nevertheless very helpful info. Super!
Thank you, I'm so glad you enjoyed the video!
What crop style does your dog have? Would you consider doing an ear posting video? Most posting I've seen are for longer show crops.
Hello 👋 Charlette. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
This really is amazing.
And interesting.
Welldone.
👍🏻🙏🏻👌🏻
Hmmmm. !!!!!
Did you get the name arlo from that good dinosaur movie? My son loves that flick
Haha yeah. My son had a hand in naming him for sure. The Good Dinosaur was my son's favorite movie when we brought Arlo home.
Can you please make a video on how you are posting arlos ears! We are getting a puppy in 3 weeks and I can not decide on which method is the best!! Please help!
I wove dorbmann pinshers plus I am getting a new one becuase our first one tuff
Did you end up getting one from somewhere else?
Thanks again!
very good channel John love it
Oh my goodness... He had gotten sooooo big!! He is just a gorgeous dobie!☺️
Thanks! Yeah, he really is growing fast!
This makes me want to test both my dobermans! great video thanks
Love the video John. Personally I found this information to be spot on.
Thank you Alpha! I always appreciate seeing you in the comments. Have you tested your pup yet?
Yes for both of them
@@alphadog5996 Any surprises or is all good?
@@DobermanPlanet No. My vet told me they were both good.
Found this video from the resource page you created. Lots of great info. Thank you.
Question;
Is this an American service or is it international? Will I be able to use the prepaid envelope to send in the sample or would I have to make sure the postage is covered as I live outside the CONUS?
Hi! Thank you so much for the info! Quick question- why did you choose this test over the test for purebreds?
Just purchased the test ! I’m so excited! I have a European Doberman imported from Romania... working on getting all her health testing done and if all is good I will be breeding her sometime in 2021
I really enjoyed this video. You allways have such good information.Thank you for all you do for us and for the breed.
HI JOHN,HI ARLO!
GREAT VIDEO,THANKS!
ARLO IS SOOO BEAUTIFUL!
STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY!
GREETINGS FROM GERMANY!
👍👌👍👌💙💚🧡😘
Thanks Silvia! Always good to see you on here! You too!
How long did it take to get the results back ?
Just bought my test kit, can't wait! Just hope there's no bad news.....
Nice video! Can you show us what kind of toys dobermans puppy and grown Doberman u get for them
Hi 🙋♀️ my husband and I love your Channel.
Binx and Arlo show as close relatives on Embark. Just got my results back today. Pretty neat stuff. 👋🏻
Very cool! What's the percentage match?
Hello John am in love with your videos. A Doberman is my dream dog and I was wondering where can u buy a European Doberman I just can’t find one hope you can help me out and keep killing it 🙌🙌
My bud-bud is also named Arlo. Subscribed and registered. Great work.
Where did you get arlo could you please direct me to the breeder he’s beautiful
Hy. Very interesting video. Do you know if this test could be done on a rough collie. Or do you know a test recommended for this breed? Thank you and good job!!!
Have you heard of paw print genetics for DNA testing? Any thoughts on what their testing provides?
Hey question for you. i have a pup 8.5 weeks now. make a video regarding posting ears up. i don't want his ears to be crooked or anything else
I did the embark test on my almost 2 year old doberman and she has 1 copy of the DCM. So interesting, I will bring this to the attention of her vet.
Hello 👋 Mary. How are you doing? Hope you are fine. I'm Mark Clifford and am from Denver Colorado, where are you from? You seem like a real country girl
Can you do a Dobermann routine for me
Very informative and good research.
Thanks for the test review
I'd be super interested to find out what the breeder finds out. Please tell us
Definitely! Might be a bit since he's having to buy a bunch of DNA kits, test them all, send them off and wait for results. But I'll definitely let you guys know when I do!
@@DobermanPlanet thank you sir
Can you do a video on the breed "going extinct" and the things being done to preserve the doberman?
This is a great video! Looking forward to reading you complete guide! I add to this comment after I read it!
Hi I have an 8 month Doberman puppy and since a month he would just get up and pee in this crate. How do I work with this situation.. he used to give me signed before but not nothing
My dog was tested by breeder and i got a copy of it. He is negative for all including hip dysplasia
This is a really cool thing with the testing
DP is on my list 😎
Grace says Hey and I really appreciate the videos and the news letter, which might be the real gold nugget with all it’s information.
Thank you for this video. I am ordering a test for Petey today!
