    My 2yr old European Doberman lays with me at night but as soon as I turn the TV off to go to bed every night he goes & sleeps in the recliner next to the front door to watch the house all night.
    & its something I never trained him to do. Just shows their natural instinct.

      My ( late) Maggie had her own ottoman in the living room. She had view of the front and back doors and a view of my bedroom door. The ottoman was the only furniture she was allowed on. If I was on the couch, she was on the floor beside me or in the floor with the kids playing. She slept on her ottoman every night.

    We lost our Dobe Wrigley at six years old from a seizure disorder. He was so smart and loved agility and was the best obedience dog I'd ever had. We miss him every day. We so enjoy watching your videos and Arlo's progress. We have two elderly Bull Terriers now. Maybe at some point another Doberman will be in our lives.

    Tip for Doberman owners!....Instead of using the popsicle sticks to help post the ears, you can use Backer Rod and get this at Lowes or Home Depot for under 4$ it saved me so many visits and money to the Vet to get retaped. The backer rod was way more effective and easy on his ears. A much more comfortable dog is going to leave the post in rather then one that is uncomfortable, I was showed this by another Doberman owner and still use this method. It strong enough to keep his ears up until they are settled permanently and flexible enough to keep the Dobie comfortable while they sleep or play!

      I want one now that it's been about a year since I lost my dog. This actually seems like less since mine was a Weimaraner. They need well over 2 hours of off leash running, and you CANNOT let them out without a fenced yard. They will run away.

    I love your videos!! I currently have my 2nd Dobermann and I love her more than anything! She’s my best friend and my Service Dog, I literally don’t know what I’d do without her. She’s been embark tested through the Doberman Diversity Project (unfortunately I don’t have the relatives option) & other than many food allergies she’s healthy.
    My first Doberman I got the day she turned 2 from her breeder and sadly she passed away very young to DCM. She was also an amazing girl for the short amount of time I had her and I’ll always miss her.

      This breed is phenomenal. My father was a breeder of Dobermans when I was very young. When I was older, my father kept a phenomenal black Doberman with a tan chest to protect me as we lived on dense bushland which was snake infested and I was a tomboy, always exploring and climbing trees. He was regal, intelligent, protective and loving. Always following me silently, like a shadow. I only ever heard him bark when he found a snake. When I was ten, there was a flood and he jumped into our dam and saved a family of ducks one by one without any harm.

    I got my Doberman when he was 4 weeks. When we found out he was too young we gave him back but they told us that his mom stopped giving him milk so we got him when he was almost 6 weeks. He was still too young but he did really good. It was really stressful especially because I had to take care of him everyday by myself even when I had class online. My brother didn’t help. And my mom was working.

      Dobermans are awesome. My father bred them and kept a few as they were just so incredibly protective of the family and I was a tomboy, loved the outside life, hiking in the bush and climbing trees. He had one that followed me everywhere and elected him as the family pet. Trampled with him through densely snake inhabited territory, many venomous, for a good eight years before he passed away from cancer. Neither of us were ever bitten. RIP to both of them. My father loved animals as I do. A genetic and or environmental gift wrapped in gold. The return is phenomenal.

    Just another great video from this gentleman on Dobermans. He's not only an expert, but he explains it in down to earth terms, is highly approachable and truly understands the breed. I don't agree with 100% of everything he says, such as amount of time that you should leave your adult Doberman alone, but if I was going to pick one source for information to guide new or existing Doberman owners it would be him. Great job and keep up the fine work! By the way, I also am a doberman owner and have done a ton of research before I purchased my doberman pinscher. About the only downside to the breed that I see, because they truly are super dogs and exceptional in just about everything they do, is that the Doberman Pinscher has a bad reputation which the majority of Americans are completely ignorant of. I am doing my best to dispel these rumors by making sure that any children or adults who want to pet my dog always have that option and I often ask them if they would like to pet her. My dog is socialized, a great companion and highly intelligent. Thanks again for another good video!

    I just got my Doberman puppy two weeks ago, his legs were crooked from his own weight and no one wanted him since the breeder had other dogs who were completely healthy. Now his legs is perfectly straight and growing big! We are kind of struggling to keep his ear posting on all day because it will never last a day without it falling off. He would scratch and pull on it at night and we would always find it off his ears in the morning. Does anyone have any advice?

    • @klintonodonnell3318
      @klintonodonnell3318 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      What type of posts are you using? If he is pretty active not all types are secure enough. We tried multiple ways on our Doberman before finding one that worked and held up to his craziness! Lol. Foam curlers aren't bad, but we always struggled to keep the base of them down in his ears. They would slip out and then lean over. The thing that worked the best for us is extra thick mole foam. It has to be the thick kind in order to be stiff enough. Get medical glue and glue them to the inside of his ear. You have to hold it on till the glue dries, so it's a little bit of a pain to get him to stay still for that long, but just keep the treats coming, and don't let it get you frustrated. This will really help with handling him in the future. The good thing about mole foam is it allows the ear to dry out, and is less intrusive. You can leave it on for a week or more, and if it starts to peel off, you can add some glue behind it and re-secure it without too much hassle. Good luck!

    • @suzannethepatriot8049
      @suzannethepatriot8049 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Try different methods. I watched lots of TH-cam videos and chose the one that I thought I could handle. We ended up with the tampon/ duct tape method. Just make sure you put a healthy grade solvent on the tape before trying to remove. It can be a pain, but find a partner who is patient and you can do it together. It will be worth it. Good luck!

      Suzanne The Patriot sorry i have been looking for a comment from someone with an older male doberman because i have a question i can’t find the answer too. did you neuter your dog? if not, does he spray everything because i don’t want to neuter my puppy but i’ve heard stories about dogs in general spraying everything, battling for dominance, & just being aggressive due to the extra testosterone. sorry if this is a bother i just can’t find anyone else to ask. i just want to know how my dog might act if i don’t neuter him

    • @suzannethepatriot8049
      @suzannethepatriot8049 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Trinity We did not neuter our dog. We discussed this subject with our breeder at length because we had concerns for our dogs ultimate heath. Let me just say, our breeder was absolutely correct. We have had zero issues. Like any other training we set the boundaries early on. Honestly I don’t remember him trying to spray in the house but maybe twice. We let him spray in certain areas of the yard. We taught him to not spray my plants. Anyway, it was a great decision for us and our dog. We have a wonderful, well balanced and happy Doberman. Don’t listen to the naysayers. You know what is best for your situation. Hope that helps and glad to answer the best I can.

    Thank you so much for this video. I always enjoy them. So informative! We have a 25 week Dobie and one of my issues with him is his barking. He barks at the whole world. He scares people and I try to let them know he’s a playful goofball.
    How do I get him to stop barking so much? I try to have him focus on me. Sometimes that works. Any other suggestions? Is it too late to teach him the bark and quiet command? I was thinking that may work.

    • @antoinettenovella1630
      @antoinettenovella1630 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He is 25 weeks old, it is far too early to be too late to address this issue. There are various ways you can curtail the bark. Dobermans have phenomenal protection drive. Part of the reason why they can become problem barkers. There are clickers you can buy that could work. You could try a 'SHH' and a soft nudge to just front of their hindquarter. It all depends on whether they are barking for attention or barking because they want to alert you that someone is at the front door.

      @@adhamelmaghalawi_7320 I focused on really, the difference between studying and "understanding how". Information research is much like academic studying. dallemon15 look at other breeds that r said to be smarter than dobermans. Golden retrievers, gsd, poodles, they’re smarter breeds than Dobermans but they’re considered “beginner” breeds. It’s like with reptiles, I’ve had no experience with reptiles but if I wanted to get say an ackie monitor, as long as I’ve done plenty of research and am aware of what I’m getting into, I can do it. John himself said that he wasn’t prepared for cooper at first because he wished he’d done more research

    I would always have a Dobe with docked tail and ears done. They look so regal! I’ve also heard the argument that all relatives of dogs in the wild have ears that stand up and that it’s actually healthier. I have not done any research myself on this, it’s just what I’ve heard. But personally, I like the look of a Dobe with cropped ears and tail better. We chose to get our Dobe’s ears done and she did quite well with her ears healing and had no issues. Her tail was done by the breeder when she was only a few days old.

    I had two Dobermans, a female for 1 year and a male for 10 years and when the male passed away I didn't get another one because my job changed and required a lot of travel. Now years later and just retired and today put a deposit on a male puppy. We can't wait to pick him up in four weeks! The genetics look good from both parents. The female is half European and half American while the male is European. I'm thinking this will give the puppy a little more genetic diversity. I came upon your videos and website and think it's a fantastic resource even for an experienced owner - I know I made a few mistakes with my fist Dog (she was very protective and scared our neighbors so had to give her away to a farmer - I should have done a better job with socializing her) but did much better with the second, he was a 29inch/ 125 lb pussy cat. Now I feel even more prepared thanks to your great work. Please, keep going, don't stop!

    When I went to pick out my boy Roscoe I set him and his brother on my lap one on each knee and they both fell asleep, when mom got up and came around one pup got up to go get food and one stayed cuddling with me. I picked the cuddler and 5 years later have one of the snuggliest dogs anyone has ever seen. Doesn't hurt that the breed is already super affectionate, also doesn't hurt that I carried him around like a baby until he was 60lbs and I couldn't manage it anymore lol.

    From your other video on Doberman colors you note the black and rust have the least skin issues and the Reds are more likely to have some skin issues. Is it possible to be more specific? For example if black/tan has a 1% occurrence of sensitive skin and rash issues and if this is 4X mor common in Reds… then we are still only at 4%. However,if black/tan has a 20% risk and the Reds are still 4X more likely to have issues…. Now we are up to 80%. Thanks!

    My Doberman puppy is about 13 weeks now. Sometimes after taking him outside to potty we can’t get him back inside. He will run from us lay on the ground, roll around and while we are trying to get him to carry him in he’ll be snapping at us. Also tried to take him out on a leash and he will be bitting the leash. Its usually my older children ages 16&13 who are with him most the day. It is hard for them when they are watching him. Any tips tricks would be appreciated... thanks 😊

    Excellent info. One thing I want to point out is IPO consists of three levels. I don’t remember the order other than Level III is Protection which the owner can choose not to do. Levels I & II focus on Obedience and Tracking which in my opinion the former method IPO is superior to AKC. With AKC you’re mainly working with other owners and dogs in a square pattern. With IPO it’s more like what you and your dog will experience in real life and s/he will become more quickly acclimatized to distractions and respond more readily to commands in their presence. I did AKC Obedience with my 2nd Doberman and he did very well but used IPO methods with my 3rd and believe it’s the better way to go and I also think the dog enjoys it more. AKC probably is still more available than IPO depending on the region, but there are plenty of books available and it’s not necessary to find a group, one can do it yourself especially if you have previous experience training dogs. Doing IPO methods for Tracking and Obedience would not be difficult. But I’d stay away from Level III unless Professionals are available during the process.

    I would have to disagree with the ear cropping process. My 15 week old Dobie just finished up his ear cropping/wrapping process yesterday and so far, so good. It took about 5 weeks after surgery and they look good. Yes, 5 WEEKS. Hopefully, they stay up from now on. Yes, I used an old school licensed Veterinary (the newer/younger vets generally won't do the procedure). Yes, the ear cropping procedure was expensive, but if it saves me 6+ mos of ear wrapping...then it's WAAAAY worth it!

    I really look forward to these. I'm against cropped ears, but don't judge those who do.
    My Doberman is going to be 9 in October. He's so in tune with me and so emotionally connected, there isn't much training needed.
    He is always with me. I'm 54 and a disabled vet. I do get him down to the middle school football field 3 or 4 times a week at 4am and let him run free for 40 minutes.
    Think that's enough? Don't have much of a backyard anymore. I did have a 20 acre ranch, so he ran all the time up until 2.
    Kaiser is very protective naturally. When he was 5, I had the TV turned up load and the guy who was issuing my divorce papers, decided to walk into my small home.
    Kaiser knocked him back out of the doorway and onto the deck. He did bite him in the shoulder and hand before I was able to call him off.
    I called the sheriff and he reprimanded the guy who opened my door.
    Kaiser is best friends with the cats and my feral outside cats.
    The sheriff here in Oklahoma see him all over town with me and at the highschool field, when it's on the weekends. The kids per him and the cops do too!
    Never walk into someone's home!! LMFAO!

    • @lyreparadox
      @lyreparadox 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In zoos they call it "enrichment" but basically you want to give them toys that they have to use their minds to figure out. Kongs are the most common recommendation - stuff with food or peanut butter, you can also freeze them to make it harder to get the food out. There are also other puzzle toys, where your dog has to figure out how to open it to get the treat inside. Things like that will stimulate them mentally, and tire them out without tearing up the house.

    • @MyWorG
      @MyWorG 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well beside toys, just tire him/her out before you leave for work. Even some easy obedience&play sessions, or sniffing/searching work for that. Switch it up and they will tire themself out 🙂

    We just added a second European Doberman puppy to our family. Xena and Zoey are 7 weeks apart, -same sire, different litter (obviously). Dealing with two puppies during the puppy stage is challenging, but things are going exceptionally well. I'm wondering if they know they're sisters, and if, because of their familial ties, will they be bonded with each other more so than two unrelated Dobermans? Also, our puppies play rough, (like WWE or Octagon type of rough), but thankfully, even though they appear to be all teeth, they don't bite down on each other with any force. As soon as they see each other, IT'S ON! I try to keep a rope in their mouths so they can play tug and keep-away with other, but they have more fun chasing, summersalting and mouthing each other. Is it normal for Doberman pups to play so rough? Will they eventually settle down a little bit?

    I was wondering if it would be ok to have a Doberman in an apartment. I’ve been struggling with this question for so long. I would have it registered as a service animal for panic attacks and easing anxieties of being outside (security with a dog like that) so it would come with me everywhere. So if it has a walk pretty much all day and and 30 min- an hour of training everyday plus some hiking if we are up for it would apartment living be ok? The apartment is in a great location with lots of parks around and a big green spot in the courtyard. I live in Toronto so we have warm summers and pretty decent winters. With my circumstances would it be recommended I get a Doberman (I fell hard in love with the breed)

    • @suzannethepatriot8049

      Absolutely. We have a house on a half an acre and take the dog out into wooded areas. The dog always wants to be right with you anyway. Mine rarely leaves my side. As long as they get a lot of regular exercise, then NO problem.

    • @yanatcherkacheninova6209

      @Harshid P I totally agree! I’ve done a lot of research but it’s always best to have a professionals help and guidance. Also I know Canada has quite a bit of guidelines for service dogs, a doctors recomendation and I think mandatory tests / classes. I was just hesitant with the apartment part as I’ve seen some people in the community tear people apart for apartment living. But as long as they have proper amount of exercise and stimulation, should be fine right?

      Sounds like you can definitely succeed in an apartment with a Doberman. They love being right on top of you usually so they don't mind tight spaces... until it's time to exercise and let some energy out! That's where apartment dwellers can get into problems unless they have a good plan and method to make sure they get the exercise they need, which it sounds like you do! I actually did an article on that here; www.dobermanplanet.com/why-dobermans-can-make-great-apartment-dogs/

      We have a very active dog in an apartment. On top of daily walks we have an area in the living room with no furniture and a large, soft rug where we can do some indoor playing and training. Our dog is also able to run free (just as she would in a fenced in backyard) almost daily. We take her to fenced in areas, like dog parks, or to places we know are safe for her to be let loose in (e.g. hiking). In my opinion she is better off than a dog with a fenced in yard and a lazy owner.

    Hi have just come across your site, and I must say what a fantastic informative blog.. 👍 OK NOW MY QUESTION IS..
    1. I went to visit a dog for sale, a 2 and a half year old male (not neutered) today and spent time with the owner and the dog for about 2 hours.
    I witnessed the dog while out walking, and another dog was being walked and the doberman I was looking at went nuts to try and get at the other dog to play, jumping, pulling, barking and whimpering, as the dog is 2 1/2 year old is this going to be hard to break down as a habit, it was pretty embarrassing and the Ower was truly quite truthful with me and he explained that his doberman could not be trusted to come back on command, and what I witnessed was the dog just wanting to play but to anyone who was out walking there dog would be scared as he was intimidating and barking at the other dog in a frantic manner, . Will this be hard to fix, how would you recommend dealing with this behaviour, I explained to the owner that I would be interested in taking the dog but the lead pulling and the rareing up and barking at other dogs passing on the pavement had me concerned, the dog as mentioned is only 2 and a half, he's a big fella tan/rust, but he is full of energy, I myself am 50years young retired and live beside a beach, iv had a black and tan doberman previously from a pup which I trained to a satisfactory level, he passed away over 15years ago and I liked the look of this tan and rust dog but there are issues that the present owner has let the dog away with and in my opinion the dog has realised that he can get the hand (paw.. Lol) over on the owner, I told him I would think about it and get back to him tomorrow with an answer.. Will I have my work cut out breaking these bad habits that are now obviously ingrained into the dog??.. The lead pulling I can master but the going nuts and rearing up, barking and whimpering to get off the lead to other dogs passing has me concerned, personally I don't know how to fix that..
    Any thoughts please would be so appreciated.. Kind regards Richard

    The difference in buying a dog from Germany and a Doberman from USA is you must do a breed survey or what is called a ZTP in Germany before breeding. America you don't have requirements. The breed survey test the temperament of the dog is what counts! In the USA the United Doberman Club does working events and such as IGP or the ATT for your dogs. The Doberman Pincher Club of America does a Working Aptitude Evaluation (WAE) Test. My point is you can buy a show Doberman or Working Line Doberman if you plan on working your line either way you go 3 generation back on both sides of working or show or pet for titles this increases your chances of titling dog you get somebody or Club which will help you. You don't go to a mule salesman when you buy a racehorse. I wouldn't buy a Doberman from a pet breeder it certainly depends on what you want. All of my Dobe's except one has a IGP title and I've done breeding and bred IGP or Schutzhund Dobes. So always look at body of work of breeder! You want a dog with good temperament at the end of the day!

    We have an 18 week old Doberman girl and have started taking her to puppy training classes, as much to help socialize as to get training tips.
    The classes are Saturday and Sunday at 5pm. The trainer has said we should not feed our dog at all on Saturday before training, and only give a small dinner afterwards and again nothing Sunday until after training, then normal dinner. Normally we feed her twice a day. Obviously during training we give alot of treats but I'm really not happy with this as clearly by Sunday she's very hungry.
    As a result I'm thinking to not go and just continue to train at home. I've had other breeds before and never had any problems home training. Is this a common training practice?, the other owners don't seem to have any issues with this.

    • @123mathtutorabc4
      @123mathtutorabc4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you can feed her a bit before class but bring some real high value treats (cheese, pieces of hot dogs or cooked chicken and so forth). The trainers just want the dogs to be as motivated as much as possible.
      edit: anyways those kinds of courses are meant more to socialize the puppy than to actually train them

      Not sure either if that is good advice. I can understand why you would be unhappy with this. She is 18 weeks old. She would not understand why she is being deprived of food. At any age I don't see this as being a healthy technique. It breeds insecurity in the dog. They need routine. I can understand the thinking behind it but this seems extreme. I would seek further professional advice dude. I wish my father who was a very much respected and loved Doberman breeder when I was very young, was still alive. Seems like manipulation to me. Dogs, if they are hungry are likely to be more obedient - generally - and it seems to me that they are utilising this tactic to ensure they appear successful because offering treats when they are super hungry is likely to lead to an outcome better suited to their income stream. I would suggest that you that you cease this training and look into ways of training her yourself or if you don't have the time, someone that possesses in equal measure assertiveness and empathy. They do need strong directive, not denying that at all. This does not sound healthy and it appears to be more counter-productive.

But seeing her tail only have muscle 2 inches from her body and the rest is PURE bone and tendons only, she tried chewing her tip off twice from fleas and almost succeeded because it's so thin! I saw people who didnt doc tails but their dog broke it on the fridge from only wagging it twice. They had to AMPUTATE IT! And my med doberman has polyps in ears so not cropping, it's very hard to see and they dont get enough air. So i have to put meds in them.

    We are picking up our red male European Doberman on Friday!! When looking at all the breeders in our state I did not see one single breeder who bred American Dobermans. I kinda wanted the bigger euro anyway, but did not expect to not see any Americans out there. What do you see while looking for Dobermans?

    We taught our half-American, half-Euro Doberman (now 11 months old) to bark on command. Every time he heard a suspicious noise outside and would give his alarm bark, we would say “danger”. It conditioned him to begin barking and be on alert every time we say it! 🙂👍
    I do have a question about playing with other dogs. We adopted a stray coonhound/border collie mix just six months before bringing home our Doberman. The mix is a much gentler soul than the dobie, and although they get along quite well, we do have to keep a sharp eye on the situation and step in as “alphas” when the Doberman gets too enthusiastic and tries to use our other pup as his personal chew toy. Will he become more gentle in his wrestling with her as he reaches maturity? (We did make the personal choice to have him neutered at 10 months due to several factors, including his aggressiveness during play.)

      Dogs have different play styles. While they may learn to play more gently as they mature, some dogs will just always like that rough "chew face" sort of play while others will prefer to play by running & chasing. There are some videos on the channel "It's Me or the Dog" where the trainer talks about appropriate play and when to intervene. You could also check out the book "Play with your Dog" by Pat Miller, she talks a bit about play styles and appropriate play between dogs (especially important if you're going to dog parks). Hope this is helpful. 😊

      Lyre Paradox, yes, thank you! You nailed the difference in my pups. Our little mix‘s herding tendencies mean that she loves to chase or be chased. The dobie’s desire for dominance means that he always wants to bite her neck or back, even though part of him knows he is lowest in the hierarchy (Neither of them are dumb enough to mess with our cranky old Australian shepherd! 😂) All our dogs get tons of exercise (2+ hours a day). Right now, I don’t feel comfortable leaving the Doberman and the mix outside together unattended for more than five minutes. What are your thoughts on putting the Doberman on a runner line for the occasional time when they need to be outside for 20 or 30 minutes without supervision? We would obviously do some test runs to make sure he can’t tangle or otherwise injure himself.

    If you think of it as a safety thing by docking the dogs tail it should make sense. Family dog, the child can't pull the dogs tail. Security dog, the invader has one less thing to grab which adds protection directly to and for the dog.😊
