Vlogmas No. 19: Guys, I threw a P2 through the basement window.
That’s hilarious

Next Simon video : how to demolish stair side walls.
Do it !
yup, theyre so useless!
How to replace a broken window after a skip off the top of the basket!
You should have rolled the turn the other direction to only have 1 seam unless my calculation is off.
@@genesorg1341 I'm not sure a putting disc would break a window thrown at that speed in the video....
I am so glad somebody finally got Simon an actual, real basket to practice on.
Nice house. Love the woods in the backyard. Being a long time homeowner I would 1.) Put the desk in the office next to the window with a bird feeder on the outside. Humming bird feeder in the summer. 2.) Make a mesh frame to put over the basement window. 3.) Put indoor/outdoor carpet in the basement, comes in 12' wide so no seams, put in tack strips so you can stretch it tight 4.) Put in whitewashed (bright) pallet wood on back and some of the side walls.
Simon. Turf requires sand on it and a brushing machine to blend the sand into the turf base. Then over time with the sun the grass sands up and blends the gap so u can't see the seem. Love your work. Turf was the best choice. Gl on the putting practice.
I will always be envious of your disc wall.
If you're concerned with noise you can wrap the basket pole with pipe insulation. Helps a ton for indoor putting.
I highly recommend putting some lag bolt hooks into the ceiling. You can hang a net from it and not only catch any missed putts, but you can practice throwing form too. Not to mention a net goes up and comes down in a few minutes so you can mostly return that room to normal if you need if for an auxiliary use. I did this in the bonus room of my old house and it worked out great.
You could make you back stop wall into a pallet wall. Use old pallet wood to piece together a wall. Usually comes out looking super sick! Plus if the discs hit it, it wont damage the wall since it has a weathered look already. Just a thought. House looks nice!
I think you could put a box fan into one of the window wells to get some wind action in that basement!
get a decent sized pedestal fan you can move around to simulate headwind/tailwinds!
@@MCGIESEKE Actually this is a better idea haha
@@TheJamesMReid I mean if he wants to simulate a *cool* breeze the window fan would be better but ... 😂
@@jmcgraw6 Maybe a little snow drift action too? ha!
Just stick a garden hose and sprinkler in there to simulate rain.
That looks great. I want one of those now. Basically I just want your house.
0:48 I see that Discmania Mystery box in the background
What you need on the side wall is that woods looking wallpaper stuff.
Simon u need to tell all ur subscribers to subscribe to Eagle so that he can shave his head
Yes, please
Yeeeeessss I need the bald eagle
@@chrisfischer6121 lol ik
I'd also want a indoor putting green like this! Looks sweet! Love the DIY feel of it ;)
The foam they put on walls at recording studios is expensive and you'll just destroy it quickly with the discs. Hanging a blanket would be easier, cheaper, and pretty quiet.
I was going to suggest that exactly. Like a padded moving blanket draped over a rod.
I think you need to make a life sized cut out of Jonathan crouched down behind the basket with his Slomez camera to simulate real life.
This is brilliant.
I would remove the banisters on the lower part of the stairs to give more room
For indoor putting I would recommend surrounding the inner pole in padding or towels to reduce noise. I know that no one really asked me, but from my experience with consistent indoor putting the noise amplifies but not in a good way.
Nice use of the meal foam "stuff." Might want to do something about the window, like putting some type of stiff screen over it. Good luck!
My buddy has a setup with wallpaper trees in the background, not sure where he got it.
That's cool. They also make giant fabric wall hangings of photo realistic trees and outdoor scenery on Amazon for super cheap. Just make sure you select the right size.
I put two eye bolts (on studs) in the side walls near the ceiling and put a cable between them and hung a heavy blanket over it. you could also find a used baseball net and make sure its pulled tight so it stops the discs.
i feel the same way walking through Home Depot. I come in for a drill and leave with a fridge haha
You can get padded walls for basements. We have them in our basement and they work great for just what you are doing. They can also take a pretty decent throw too. Just have to watch the rebound sometimes. Have had the disc come flying back at me like a rocket, aha.
Will you be practicing your push putts?
The soun proof cushions is called EGG CRATE FOAM; you coul also use cork boards or cork tile for a nice look. And yes the grain of the grass is why it looks funky, get it all the same direction or hide the seam at the back.
An egg shell mattress topper would be a good/cheap cushion for the wall!
It might be good to put a hard panel in front of the insulation on that back wall. The hard panel would distribute the blow from the disc, and the soft backing would absorb the shock. Without the hard panel, a real hard hit from a disc may still damage the drywall under the insulation. Just a thought.
I use the thickest curtain possible as the backstop behind my basement basket and it works well. The curtain covers a squat rack/mirror and i haven't broken the mirror, or damaged the wall over the year. It wasn't the cheapest option but looks decent vs the blankets I used at first.
You need to get some BIG fans for your putting practice area and add some wind indoors could be fun for a video.
I have that exact same insulation material and I wrapped it around the pile of the basket, and it makes the basket much quieter. Just a tip
I feel that Home Depot cluelessness in my soul.
Even for a seasoned handyman like myself it's still challenging.
Also you can cut a pool noodle long ways and wrap it around the center pole for an indoor basket silencer!
Forget padding the wall, put in a net behind using hooks on the walls, you can have it so that it catches the disc before it would hit the wall. Also, you can add in more hooks closer to the entrance of that nook so you can use it to practice harder throws into it once your elbow starts feeling better.
That's for putting practice, for driving practice (after your elbow heels, ofcourse) put a large moving blanket across the front of your basket and throw into the blanket. You can put the blanket on a shower curtain rod to move it out of the way, along with a speed gun to monitor speed. This should be your Vlogmas Day 22 video. ;) Thanks, Handyman Pete (a guy that's knows Home Depot all too well)
Hi Simon. A way you could make the backwall look better, is to cover up the window and hang up a couple of sheets or maybe use curtains. Also you could have a curtain hanger on the sidewalls, and have a sidenet, you could slide out if needed.
Artificial turf usually has cryogenic rubber or sand to help with keeping them from flattening.
You should hang up curtain's from the roof with rails to be able to close and open up for lighting when not throwing.
Simon, two things you can do to reduce the noise is either wrap the center pole in drawer liner with masking/painters tape, or you can use silicone caulk to fill the center pole. I did the drawer liner fix for my indoor basket and it greatly reduced the noise. Your fiancée will appreciate it.
I used pipe insulation on the center pole, it worked great.
If you just want to protect the wall and don't care about sound you could hang some mesh/netting from the ceiling behind the basket. If you care about sound then you might want to silence the basket (rope threaded in the chains and a foam pad on the pole helps a ton). Looks great though!
Hang some type of blanket from ceiling to the floor to help with protecting the wall and window
Simon,
You need to drop a cloth about two feet from the window hanging from the ceiling. That will give you cushion and a barrier to protect the window. Simple is sometimes the best, not just the easiest. Looking good though!
Great job Simon! Just a small piece of advice, that glass window looks very precarious behind the basket... You should protect it by building a frame around it and adding some steel grating on top of the frame. It will save you in the long run. 😉
Nice setup! I have one set up in my garage. Unfortunately I can only get 20’ 😕. Hey...cover up that window before you break it by skipping off the top! Haha. I put a net behind my basket to catch the discs. The ones that miss get caught in the net and settle at the foot of the basket. Works well for easy retrieval
I'm glad I'm not they only one whom goes after a goal till its done, regardless of the visual outcome. Purpose first, then visual.
@Simon you need to hang a archery backing net to catch the discs.
Might benefit from building an adjustable outdoor system when it warms up so you can change the height of it on the fly to vary your looks at it.
Simon, great setup, but for the backdrop you can do something easily removable that protects the window as well. Get a canvas painting drop cloth and some tarp clamps and a couple pulleys and some para cord. Hang the drop cloth from pulleys on the ceiling with the tarp clamps and para cord and tie it off on a cleat on the wall. That way you have protection all the way to the ceiling and when not putting you can lower the protection and have a normal basement. I have this setup in my basement so I can send pics and or a diagram if you’re interested.
@Simon Lizotte , you should put some pipe insulation around the middle pole, so it would make the basket so much quieter. At least your cats and fiancee would be so pleased if you'd do that. Greetings from Finland!
Please tell me you tried rolling it out the other direction aswell... Looks like a perfect fit if you count the squares from the previous floor.
If you take off the chains and wrap the center pole with some tape it will significantly cut down on the noise.
This video made me all sorts of anxious about that window getting broken. Put a net or fan over it!
Simon, check out foam camp rest mats or yoga matts for the backdrop. they are bigger and you can probably find them in cool colors too! I'm looking forward to the day I get to do stuff like this at my own house.
What you should put on the back wall is a golf practice net. You can buy a 10x7 for like $80 on Amazon
Was the turf roll not wide enough the other way? I feel like it was because there was a lot left.
It needed to be 9 ft wide and it has a depth of 10 ft so when you shift it the other way then it would have the same problem just in the other direction
@@micah_lee if you look at the squares from the previous mats at 2:55 you can tell the room is wider than deep (4 squares x 4.5) so the mat would have fit better the other way around
@@liiiinder He said it has a 9.5 width and a 10.5 foot length. When he laid the turf out, the turf was less than 9.5 foot wide (more like 8) but of course is was much longer. So if he turned it once to the side, then he would have it only reach 8 foot (from the back wall to the camera) which is shorter, and then he would have to cut it and then make the rest of the mat out of what he cut off.
@@micah_lee please look at his hand gestures when he says the measurements 2:23. The roll is longer than it is wide and if you look at whats missing at 4:45. I say thats about a foot which would made it fit way better the other direction.
@@micah_lee And if it was 10.5 wide and you say the roll only was 8 feet the gap would have been 2.5 feet which is alot! 😅
The padding on the wall looks great and was available.
Need a good size Discmania banner on the wall and some amazing disc golf art 👌 A rake will help with the green turf.
Great setup! We are looking to do something similar in our basement this winter. Thanks for more inspiration to get it done. (You said in an earlier video that Clementine isn't crazy about people. Maybe not all people, but you are definitely her "human". She follows you all around the house. So cute. Cats are awesome.) Looking forward to Day 4!
Those walls left and right are framing a visual tunnel that are aiding depth perception and aim. You don’t have that on a real course shot. But any practice is good in winter!
lol I do this as well. I have to throw from kitchen or living room to pin at end of hall. Your setup seems way more user friendly. Hope it get you the desired results.
Instead of the foam, hang a net with a little space away from the wall. Then it could even double as an indoor driving cage! You’ll obviously loose a few feet, but with it being a net you might be able to move whatever anchors it at the bottom closer to or further from the wall based on whether your putting or driving. 👍
As someone who putts in their winter basement, grab a pool noodle to wrap around the center pole. It considerably reduces chain jangling, making the upstairs family not get frustrated with the noise of practice putting.
Curious if Simon (or other pros, for that matter) use the marksman/skinny baskets for practice. I use one in my small backyard and feel like it has really helped my C1 putts.
Also, if he had just oriented the first piece of turf the other way he could have covered it in two pieces instead of 3.
Sounds to me like Discmania needs to work with Simon to make his own putter. ;)
Didn’t you have a curtain/drape with trees on it in your previous office? Hang that behind the basket from the ceiling a few inches away from the wall. It’ll catch the discs without causing damage
I put a pool noodle on the middle pole to cut down on chain noise for indoor use, just cut it down the middle and then wrap it around the pole
for the backstop- cheap cushion material off amazon then a cool landscape tapestry over that
You could get gym mats for the walls, you could also get a baseball net for drive work....sweet space man!
I miss the shot of the day! Keep it up Simon!! Hope i get to play with you again in the future!
If you cover the baskets center pipe with soft foam it will make much less sound. I would guess the sound now is quite loud indoors. Be gentle to your ears Simon and happy putting!
Put some foam on the centerbar so the metal ring doesnt touch it when the disc hit the chains, that take away alot of sound.
Was cool to see how you putt from over your shoulder. Gives me ideas!
I think you should buy a large industrial fan and place in different locations to mimic certain wind conditions.
soundproofing would make it easier to do longer sessions of putting. The loud sound of the chains could potentially cause problems. I know that I personally get annoyed if it is too loud. Might be worth looking into getting some. It looks great though!!
I use the small baseball throwing net in front of my basket, also can throw drives into it so duel purpose
in front my wall behind my basket
Ok Big Sime.... You are correct about 25ft being that sometimes tricky range in putting I tend to hit the band a lot from 25ft.
O yeah the whole reason I'm leaving a comment is .........IMHO I think if you hang a netting mesh from your ceiling approx 6 in from the wall behind the basket this will be the best way to protect your wall/window (craziness will take place when you have guests over) this will protect everything and still allowing light in from the window.
I dont know about you bit I'd for sure hit that window! Also I'm planning on getting a ball golf driving net to protect my walls and windows for my indoor putting I'd suggest that as apposed to sticking stuff to your wall.
Just ordered my first P1. Have been putting P2s for a long time and just wanting something a little straighter. It’s been difficult to find the P1s! Only downside is that I might have to rotate my P2 that you signed out of the bag soon. That just means I’ll need to get my P1 signed one day! Keep up the great content! Love watching your videos every day. And congrats on the new house! It looks sick!
I just need to know where to get those racks for your pegboard so I can finally stop thinking about how to store my extra discs.
*walks into home depot*
*sees Simon Lizotte*
With a mask on, I’m not sure I’d recognize him...unless he’s talking into his camera and slow motion punching the lens to close out a clog.
Yeah most people in this country wouldn't even know who he is, let alone recognize him. Pretty much gotta be an intermediate disc golfer to recognize the stars of the sport so far like him, and brodie, eagle, Paige pierce, etc
@@billhicks7034 A lot more people know Brodie Smith outside of the Disc Golf community... that dude has been all over TH-cam including on videos with Dude Perfect
Looks good Simon was thinking if you madde some make shift trees that you can place around the room you could practice those close scramble putts that we all seem to find from time to time.
Cant wait to see what tomorrow brings.
awesome! however it looks like a high miss could skip right into that window. maybe a screen to protect it?
I can do about 35' putts in my basement. I can nail them all day. Then I go to the course without the walls and the basket looks so much further away. Still getting up the reps though.
You need some fans going, set up some turbine fans, the type for drying wet carpet, could set up all types of cross winds, head winds and tail winds would be a good setup.
can put a big fan in there to simulate different wind directions
Throw some double sided tape to hold the seams in place. It will also help blend the seams.
You could buy an egg crate mattress topper for your wall, they are basically what they use for soundproofing and you could probably get it pretty cheap!
Hey Simon you should get a shallow ramp so you can practice putting while standing on varying elevations
Paint the back wall like the death putt on the end of Winthrop gold?
Hey simon, just a suggestion, maybe hang some type of netting behind the basket just far enough to have some slack to move, maybe fix it to the ceiling and floor to have some pulling on it so its somewhat tight! just a thought!
been looking for more p2's for a while now... looks like Simon has them all lol
Same here
Same I need more Soft P-Line P2s but they don't exist :(
You could hang something in front of the back back wall like a big flag to protect the wall. You could also probably get a contractor to remove the little wing walls that come down the stairs to open that up for you.
Simon, protip: Protect your walls with polycarbonate sheeting, goes by the trade name Lexan. It's what they make bulletproof windows/racecar windows out of. It'd be super simple to mount to the studs in your basement walls. (In my home we use it to protect our walls from hanging bikes) It could go over thin/delicate artwork. It'd be easy to mount non-delicate artwork onto it. It's clear so it won't make your basement look like a bunker. You could even use it to protect the side of your stairs without it looking crazy. Plus you could put a panel over that window and you wouldn't lose your sunlight.
Home Depot is a black hole for time. I usually look up the items I need on their website, which shows the aisle and bin number for all of the in-store items, write it down in order from left to right, and go from there. Otherwise... order online for pickup at the store. So nice.
The cat(s) in the background were the highlight for me. Bet they love the turf!
The camera angle from the 40’ mark was awesome. The wall looks great I like the pattern you did. Maybe you could fill in the blanks with other colors and materials. Don’t worry, I’m sure your window hit percentage will be way low, And if a mishap happens at least you know where Home Depot is lol! It adds a pressure element to practice! Love what you’re doing! Thanks.
I'd totally be your friend to help do things like add a plexiglass screen or cage over that window behind the basket. Cause if it were me throwing I'd hit the top of the basket and that would send the disc into the window.
Looks awesome man! Definitely got yourself a solid little man cave down there. It wouldn't be a bad idea to get some thicker foam but as far as how it looks I think it would look real cool to hang a flag or a banner over them. Still get the functionality without having to look at boring old foam.
The introduction graphics are top notch with the Santa hat and jingle. You’re becoming a top editor and your videos and graphics are showing it. Keep up the content!
I was wondering where this was in the house tour! Looks good.
I would get some of that spray adhesive and use it on the green, stuff works really well
We're doing the same in our basement for winter. It was fun seeing your work.
