I started as a helper in 1978 when I graduated from hs, broke out as a rig welder in 1985 and worked all over the country out of local 250 in los angeles. I ended my pipeliner career in 1995 due to a pretty bad on the job accident, I look back now with very very fond memories, but let me tell you my life didn’t really begin until after I got out of pipelining, my father started pipelining with a 1970 Ford pickup and a sa200 worked 35 years pipelining and passed away a multi-millionaire, my advice to all you guys is invest every penny you make don’t spend your money trying to out do every other yayhoo. Make the money and do your time it will end at some point.
That welder uses a sensor in the alternator if it grounds out it will throw the protection and kill the welder after 60sec ,oil , temp, and alternator are all on tied together for that engine protection
I know this is an old video but I hope you didn't beat yourself up too much. Shit happens, unfortunately to the best of us. You did your best getting it repaired and that's all anyone can ask.
I'm about 2 hours north of you . we have a shop up here that you could've gotten your parts at all they do is starters alternaters and ect . very well stocked. if you ever need something you can't find while your in Pennsylvania send me a message and I'll hook you up
At 40 minutes and 30 seconds you make a very good point and I've been there myself.. you have to plan ahead and do your research.. you buy a used machine whether it be gas or diesel.. you've got to know your machine.. with a used machine you're never going to get an owners manual.. or a specification manual.. with schematics specific replacement part numbers.. there are no guarantees with used equipment and you could be running around for a long time and out of work.. buy a new Miller welding machine. Make sure you have the full extended warranty.. and get it insured .. if your machine breaks down.. you get a temporary replacement while it's being fixed.. keep in touch with the manufacture and local authorized dealers and. Find out who your local authorized dealer uses for they're authorized repair shop...
I know this video is fairly old, but I have recently been having trouble with my Lincoln 300 breaking arc. At first I thought it was just me doing something wrong, but I’ve had several older more experienced welders use it and they have the same problem with it. One older gentleman referred me to a local Lincoln repair shop. Once I got in touch with them they told me they was going to steam wash my welder, generator and all. I was assured it wouldn’t mess it up. They should be finished with my welder this week so fingers crossed 🤞 I’m ready to get back on the line
Dont know if u got it fixed but take your fuel filter off n c if your getting fuel there if not, and idk if yours has it or not, but SOME have a little external fuel pump that feeds the injectors its below the fuel filter an it bolts to the side of the frame got a wire running to it, that pump may POSSIBLY be bad IF yours has it
When ever I go to the tractor supply near my house, they never have the things I need. Couldn't find any D rings, No mud flaps, no 1/4 npt air fittings, and they dont even have job box locks. I looked at every hardware store and big box store for master lock #5 one inch lock. Which is the lock needed for pretty much all job boxes. Bought my job box at home depot, they didnt have the right locks, went to another home depot no locks. Went to tractor supply, no locks. Went to lowes, no #5 master lock one inch. Holy shit people. If you sell job boxes, sell the fucking locks for them too. FUCK.
bart bley I def would have if I wouldn’t have figured it out. I always try to fix it myself for the simple fact of not being down any longer than I have to. Sometimes them shops have several people in front of you, so it might be a week or 4 before they even look at at.
Sounds to me like your floot bowl is just running empty. it will slowly fill up with gas when but cant keep up with the usage and it dies. Pretty common problem with any carburetor on a small engine. I know this was months ago but figured id throw some information about what it could be in case someone else is having the issue.
Like he said it’s diesel...sounds fuel related change fuel filter...idk if protection circuit as far as welder portion goes..some guys said that..w.o welder knowledge hard to say but I really doubt its gauges either way..
I invested in a fitted cover for my big Lincoln. The old machines were all solid state and could live outside, but all of the electronics, and especially the gauges, seem to die on the new ones if they live outside. And buying the high dollar stainless model doesn't actually get a more weather resistant machine. It might not rust, but all of the electronics corrode and cause issues. The cover might be a pain in the ass, but downtime is expensive.
I wouldn't buy a new machine just yet. Just take care of what you got. Maintenance it properly. And keep it at it's top shape. Always have a back up machine.
Earlbeck in Emigsville & Cunningham in Manchester. See alot of guys with pipeline rigs in and out of those places. I personally like Cunningham real nice people to talk to and answer questions, but I believe Earlbeck is a lincoln dealer. If they can't help, they will get you pointed in the right direction.
You got some explaining to do!!#1 What type of company are you doing this welding for?? Union or open shop??#2. What is your hourly rate?? I saw in one of your previous videos where you said and I quote "" I've been doing this for 7 years;; and I've worked for 21 different companies...?? If you answer questions number one into which you probably won't I got a whole bunch more question for you
Is it surging? My small engines sometimes do this if the gas tank vent is covered. It will start for a while then the gas can't go anywhere so it does till the pressure balences out
Jessica Rose thats what i have is a pipe pro 350 and i LOVE IT!! use to only ever run lincolns then bougt the 350 now i wouldnt trade it for the world!
Tyler Hunt Head down, mouth closed and ears open. Be like a sponge. Ask questions. Learn something everyday. I’m on the Atlantic sunrise job in pa. I’m glad you are on a job. Wish you the best.
Austin Ross thanks man! Hope to see you on a job someday! Your videos helped me into making this step. So far I love it but I have a lot to learn that’s for sure!
A welding machine thats not his thats either hooked up to a trailer, on a small trackhoe or something of the sorts. I dont know exactly what the sled he will be using is but it's an extra welding machine on something movable so you can have it out in the field/on the ROW
So looking to get in pipeline work as a welder helper to work in to a welder position I have no idea what to do to start I'm ready to work hard and give my all dont know where to start any advise
You are in the right place. I just started a basic helper duties series a couple weeks ago. These videos will help you when you actually get out in the field. We have several other videos you might find that should help give you some insight. Stay tuned. And first thing first is to just place yourself in the general welding construction world. Wether it’s pipeline or not.
Ivan Adame Not sure. Prob a cross country. I would even try a miller. Il try anything. I like welding with different machines and getting to know the differences in the way they all weld.
Chris Berseygay Yes they are fr. the brand is Martin brothers. Here is a link to an apparel video on this channel. Cloths I use and have tried in the past. th-cam.com/video/Uo_qoSEaBjM/w-d-xo.html
james dice Depends on the job. Some times you do have to take off to get it fixed. On this job they have us a sled to weld off of. So I didn’t miss any time.
If you wouldn’t care to make a video explaining what happens when your equipment fails on the right of way, weather your paid for remaining on the job site or an early quit, if you paid for a full day or till your equipment breaks, and weather or not the union will help pay to have your equipment repaired please, TIA!!!
If your getting an New one can I have that one since its not working. And I me free.jk Lol need you a coffee maker in that goat. Hope you get er running thats money being lose. Good luck
Austin Ross but like you said buying new is like replacing the old. Only with money saving on two parts. One saving thousands on something having new parts you know will last and 2 saving one your account lol.

i just ate a bag of white popcorn yesterday. Austin, you're like my new hero. cheers
I hope you get her fixed soon. New vs old that's a tough call. I would pray over it before pulling the trigger 👍
That welder uses a sensor in the alternator if it grounds out it will throw the protection and kill the welder after 60sec ,oil , temp, and alternator are all on tied together for that engine protection

Just bought a early 90s sa250 perkins diesel the other day. Thing is a champ.

If you talked to a welder repair guy there, would it have been easier to bring your machine to him ? Parts and pieces?
bart bley

Austin if the machine dies slowly is probably a fuel problem if it quits it's electrical problem
Millers the way to go.
Try Starcher Welding Spencer, WV they keep lots of Lincoln parts ask for Clint.
Justin Campbell
Thanks for the suggestion
Nice '60s model truck at 2:13! Sure don't make stuff like they used to. Hope you get it all fixed.
Hope you get up and running Austin just curious tho how many hours is on your machine? Take care

Thanks! Yes we are excited about the t-shirts.
multimeter.....get one....check battery and alternator in about 30 seconds....
Should just slide one of those pipe pros on there at 2:40 and call it done lol.
Miller all the way
Best way to fix a Lincoln is getting a miller just playing only welder I ever used is a 220 multimatic
Let’s do some videos of that truck more!
I've had new welders and old, the only thing is for sure is that they all brake down
Will Gentry
You got that right.
Time for a new Miller Big Blue 👌
Graveltrucking
Haha maybe so
I wouldn't buy a new machine just yet. Just take care of what you got. Maintenance it properly. And keep it at it's top shape. Always have a back up machine.
By the way Austin ross I put in an application for the local Union 798. I hope I get a call soon.
hey austin, would u suggest a used ranger 305 or go with a sae 200 or 300
Today I fired up my Libby Welding 2-71 Detroit Diesel - hadn't run in 20 years. It's from the military; Viet Nam era.
Kevin Hornbuckle
That’s awesome
When you have time or laid off from work. Time for some maintenance..
fule filter?
check your low oil cutoff sensor, or is that gauge the sensor?
If you have problems in the future I know couple welding supply stores (York, Pa) with-in 20 miles of the pipe line you are working on.
Steven Shaffer what’s the name of them? I go to York pretty often.
Earlbeck in Emigsville & Cunningham in Manchester. See alot of guys with pipeline rigs in and out of those places. Miller 325 trailblazer homie
This is why fords and Miller’s were built.

Welp never mind guess u found out ur problem lol.
Lincoln or miller... isn't that THE question
did you make a video when you fixed your machine
No. But I put a new alternator on it and that fixed it.

My buddy has the pipe pro 400, that is a slick runnin machine, seeing more and more pipe pros out here in Colorado

Ya that’s what we are welding with on the sled out here. They’re not bad...
Ive missed out on 2k at a construction site because my '68 lincoln redface kept overheating...oh well, at least i got paid for that one day lol
thats why you leave the thermostat out

Keep a multi meter on board...youll need it again...
What would up being wrong with your welder .. ???
just think how bad a new machine with computers on it would be.
Time to upgrade . Get a Miller Pipe Pro like Jacob Shcofield!!
Definitely fuel issue, be willing to bet it’s something very simple
Did you check the fuel lines?
why did u hv to take it off the truck
Raybo sflorida
Just easier to work on that way.
sounds like fuel delivery issue
WHY DIDN'T YOU CALL LINCOLN WELDER COMPANY ? OR AIR GAS ¿
Did you check the fuel system.
Louis Nemick
Yes.
Sounds like fuel filter to me too.
Wen u hav a break down do you stop getting paid

Please wear your seatbelt...
Why not just buy a new one you make extremely good money.
