This Hong Kong cafe's "TERRIBLE" service had to be tested. I ate breakfast there (it was AWESOME).

  • As far a Hong Kong cha chaan teng cafes go, Australia Dairy Company (澳洲牛奶公司), in Jordan, is said by internet reviews to take curt service to a new level. I went there to try one of their legendary breakfast sets, and to see if the food was worth the "rude". (Spoiler: it was).

    Just bear in mind that it is not a leisure cafeteria. It is a small dining place for "grass roots" so they do not speak in delicated way. At the same time it is also crowded with lots of hot drinks and dishes circulating back and forth. So it is also a risky place. Hence the staffs there naturally speak in more forceful ways. But they generally are not rude or hostile to customers. They want customers to settle down quickly so they can make money faster (of course) and safer.
    When you have a reasonable expectation on them, it can be fun to dine in there.

      It's like that in non touristy expresso places in Italy during the morning. Locals go in, down a quick expresso, maybe munch on something quick and GTFO and on with their day. The staff rush the tourists who go there to sip at the bar and chat and take up space. Staff isn't being rude. It's efficient. And you're not familiar with the culture and flow. Like the tourists walking aimlessly in streets of NYC. We not rude telling you to GTFO way. You're ruining the flow of people traffic. We got places and things to do.

      Rudeness in these cafes is part of the charm, it is a feature not a bug. If the service is too good it is not authentic, though this particular restaurant is way overrated.

    This is a place that I regularly visit almost every weekend and
    definately one of my all time favourite restaurant as a local Hong Konger since I was 16 (I'm now 52).
    Their food, their flavour which I love, has not change for 3 decades and remains delicious & high quality.
    I don't understand why people always criticise on their "no service" or "impoliteness",
    everyone knows cha chaan teng is a place just to feed yourself full stomach and then go;
    no one would expect they will have a 5-star hospitality as long as the food is delicious and serve in fast so that you can hurry back to work or go to school.
    They are not rude they are just busy and need to non-stop taking care of the full house customers.
    This place is a grow-up memory of many people as well, many of us start eating their food since we were kids,
    most importantly their delicious food is our comfort food and we love Australian Dairy.

    Whenever I am in HK, I make effort to visit this cafe. I have noticed that they are more polite nowadays although I never expected 5 star service, just want some cheap and cheerful food. The queue usually takes less time than it looks due to fast turnover of customers. Must try the HK style milk tea and ham + egg sandwich (not toasted coz the white bread is heavenly soft, toasted is just as yummy tho). They have steamed egg desserts, served hot or cold. Be prepared you have to share tables with strangers, but hey I chitchatted with the others last time. Good fun!

    1. Know exactly what you're going to get before even setting foot in the place;
    2. Never ask for anything that isn't on the menu;

I understand their language and to maintain efficiency in getting everyone served and operating in a fast paced enviornment, their service is more curt and to the point. Get things done fast and customers get food. Compared to North america, we can't get such efficiency even in a fast food restaurant.

    There already many food travelers been to that place and tried out those delicious breakfast that Sam ordered. For me personally, once I enjoy eating its meals I can care less about the service. And for those haven't been there yet, should already checked out the menu before hand and know what to order because can't afford to take too much time thinking and deciding once being seated there. I think I may go there by myself since seating one person is much easier in a long line. Since Australia Dairy Company haven been popular for a long time, the owner could have renovated the cafe to larger space to accommodate more people. I knew Jordan in Kowloon is not spacious. At least they could expand another cafe location or two in other part of HK in my opinion.

    I grew up in HK and I would say there are a mix attitude in this city. Yes some are rude and impatient like in Cha Chaan Teng or some districts like in Sham Shui Po as I expererience depending on their personal background, but some are kind and tolerable towards to foreigners.
    There was a time I was working at Shek Mun, Sha Tin, and I went out to buy takeaway at a nearby Siu Mei Restaurant. I was ordering at a cashier who happened to be a woman, but then for some reason I forgot to place an order for a milk tea (probably I was daydreaming) and I asked her to add it, and she rudely yelled at me for wasting her time even the whole restaurant can here her! I mean it's such a small thing, what's the big deal to her? Everyone make mistakes.

I remembered that experience so dearly as I didn't get the scolding I was looking for and they treated pregnant woman very kind.
