We caught up with Lastrite footwear owner Neville Brunker, who described the process his company go through in order to produce the quality hand made footwear that can be seen in his shop based in Whangarei, where they sell all manners of hand made walking, tramping & hiking shoes and boots from genuine leather and top quality materials.
"Well it's an age old process and it has been around for centuries and we believe that making footwear by hand is just something special, and it gives something special back to your customers and they know that they're made by hand because the proof is in the pudding."

Back in the 1980's there was a tragic event in Victoria at Mt Bogong where a couple of school kids went bushwalking with cheap Chinese rubber and cloth "military style " boots which literally fell apart and stranded the kids ,who perished in some extreme weather. A good solid, high quality boot is priceless..

Very interesting! Really fun to watch and provides insight as to why one shoe costs more than another.

shoe lasts are usually made in 2 or more parts, sometimes on a hinge. if you press the last in certain spot with enough pressure the last will "break" and then we can wriggle the last out of the shoe. usually shoe makers have a post that we can put the shoe upside down on that catches the notch in the last, then we can just press down on the shoe sole and the last "breaks" and we can easily get the shoe off. sometimes the fit is quite tight and it can be a little tough to get off though.

I like the idea of using those small cross head screws in the sole, As anybody who has tried too take apart anything that has been screwed together, It is harder than those that have been nailed

This is what is considered sticking to your roots. These days they glue the rubber on and no stitch, and they sell for over 100, and then they fall apart in one season. You can tell these shoes you can wear for over 15 years. Now that is quality. I will always buy handmade shoes.

i've wore better than the m77, and the glue is often shitty, 1300nok compared to 500nok for a pair of british army pro boots, the latter has lasted me 3 years now and almost only shows signs of wear on the heel. only thing wrong with them is the gortex lineing

Boris The Spider No he isnt wrong. The term "handmade" is not regulated even at the highest quality. There is a huge debate as to what is better, the strength and uniformity of a machine vs the tactile sense of a hand. Some want hand made to mean every single stitch and hammer hit by human hand. Some beleive machines do a better job for some things. At some point of machine work you really are just creating a regular factory shoe with more expensive materials though. I tend to belong to the group that feels if it isnt stitched by hand it isnt handmade.

@@Luckingsworth I agree there’s a cowboy boot maker in the U.S. who does every stitch by hand by poking a hole with a bradal so his needle goes through. Sorry I can’t remember his name but he makes Willie Nelson’s boots and has a 4 year waiting list just to get measured up then another few month to make them. They start at $4k. He does everything by hand apart from he uses an electric sander to make the laste apart from that all by hand.
