I'm a beginner quilter and finally my belief is validated. Solids versus - I'll call them patterned solids, my favorite being tonal. My first 2 quilts had solids, but they seemed too stark and had very little eye-catchability. So, I decided to move to "solids" with a design. Wow what a difference. From there, I will no longer use basic solid. I prefer the flow and movement of my tonals, watercolors, etc.
You did such a great job explaining what you do and why you do it. I’m a self taught quilter who learned before these great lessons where available on TH-cam. Yet I’m still learning new things from you. Thanks so much😍👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
You just grew wings 👼 in my eyes Nancy ....your explanation on how to choose fabric was ...liberating! that is the most frightening thing for me. But now I know that I can view those pretty fabrics as a solid I will stay clear of those boring solids. I’m really going to enjoy this series 👏.Many Thanks Nancy . 😘💐
Once again I learnt something new from you Nancy! I never knew about ironing in the direction of the selvedge which explains that rippled effect you mentioned, so thank you. I fold my fabric around my 6" ruler so they are the same width. I also put a note on it with the length because I can't judge it just by looking at it when it's folded. You're the best teacher on TH-cam!
Quilting and quilt making is my passion and although the masks were needed I'm so ready to get back to what I love, especially having all this time off from driving a school bus I need to have this craeative outlet to keep my sanity (here I thought it was the kids that drove me crazy, turns at that I drive me crazy lol). Even though I've been quilt making and quilting for a couple of decades I do so enjoy your videos and they inspire me and keep those creative juices flowing. Thank you Nancy!
Dear Nancy, I don’t know how to write you regularly, so I had to come to your video. I’ve learned so much on your great basics videos. I love love love the way you teach!!! You’re very straightforward and direct. Don’t put a lot of unnecessary words or steps into your quilt. I am in great need for your help and teaching. I have sewn in Laurel Burch quilt about a little under a queen size. I’m putting cuddle fabric on the back and wanted to be a self binding quilt. My problem is, I don’t know how to attach the quilt to the cuddle fabric before I self bind it. What can I do to keep all three layers together? I know they use this technique and baby quilts but I sure as heck would love to use it on my queen sex quilt. I’m not as experienced or as wise as you are, I really truly need your help. Thank you for just reading and anything you can you send my way would be greatly appreciated Robin, Clark,
I am going to recommend this series to one of my granddaughters who has taken a real interest in quilting. I have enjoyed your channel since I discovered it last fall, and I love that you are doing a basic series. Thanks!
That was a great explanation about ironing and folding fabric. Very thorough!! I love watching your videos. I’ve been quilting for about 9 years but still feel like a beginner. I look forward to this series. Thank you!!
Good advice, thank you! The middle of my block is a dark red square. It bled like mad but rewashed it before drying with dye catch and looks fine, phew
I feel like I’m back at school getting a fabulous review! It never hurts for me to see your techniques, even though it’s for the third time! LOL😃 Great job! This class is going to be so good for so many new at quilting! I love that you brought up the left handed ideas! My new friend has been worried because she’s left handed and in a class she took, she didn’t get much support.
Mlredick2 Redick Been a leftie since birth and nothing stops me. Sewing machine for us is on the wrong side for sewing, but lots of tools are dual handed, a blessing. Tell your friend to go for it. There are lots of left handed tools and for demonstrations I stand opposite a person.
What's so great! Is you can watch over and over! It will be here to refer back to! Pretty sure everyone has had wobbly strips! Or elbow in there strips!
I love your quilt and techniques, but what I REALLY LOVE are the two matching bookcases/ cubbies behind you! Did someone make them for you or would you be willing to “share” your source?
Hi Nancy. What do you do if you have a large length of fabric? How do you fold it and do you cut it down for easier handling? My current project calls for more than 6 yards of background fabric and it's rather unwieldy. I can't hold it up to straighten. Just wondering if you have any tips for longer lengths. Thanks and your videos are all much appreciated.
I am so sorry, I should’ve added I am quilting my quilt top and batting together first. And I don’t know how to attach the quilt top and batting to my cuddle fabric. Please help Robin, Clark,.
Hi Nancy. I do everything exactly as you do in this video with one additional step: I cut my edges even before folding. Is there a reason that you don't?
Hi Cindy, I just don't think it's necessary to cut it first then cut it again. I used to work in data base administration and i remember one of the trainers telling us to to use any more key strokes then necessary - make it be more efficient. So i use that same logic here - I don't think cutting the edge straight before then fold then cutting it straight again would be helpful, and it's an extra key stroke :) Hope that helps and explains?
New subscriber and like the techniques I've seen. As to fabric folding, any tips on working with several yards of fabric? I'm starting a new project and have two fabrics 4 yards each. Thanks.
@@QuiltingWithNancy thanks very much. That's basically what I had tried, but it didn't go quite so smoothly. Very helpful to see it demonstrated. Thanks again.

You are a great teacher and I'll recommend the original and Basics to all my newbies. I may get the Basics too!

Thank you. I love watching your videos.
Great. Good to go back over the basics again. I'm a fairly new quilter and this isn't ingrained yet. Thank you.
Super awesome 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video! Your instructions are so easy to understand and you have taught me so much! Thank you!

I wash all my quilts with synthrapol as soon as I make them. Sythrapol removes excess dye in the wash and won't let it reattach.

Hi Pat, I would if i could be i'm pretty sure Gina has had them for quite a while - oh, this is our "studio" in Gina's basement :)
Well tell Gina I think they are really cool!

Hi Wendy, Have you seen this video?
th-cam.com/video/6tVY26rYV4Q/w-d-xo.html
If that doesn't work you could cut it down into maybe 2 yard sections?
@@QuiltingWithNancy no I had not seen that one. Will give it a look thanks!
@@QuiltingWithNancy oh I haha remember watched that after all. Totally forgot. Many thanks!

When I wash my quilts I use woolite and put in a color catcher. It hasn't failed me yet.
When colors bleed,I soak in cold salt water and vinegar. It solves it.
Great Video. So easy to understand.... And I'm a lefty...lol
Keep at it
Thanks - will do!
