I saw Hawkwind live in the late 80s (or early 90s) when they toured the US as a power trio and they were great! I'm sure they did this song because it's the kind of style they were doing then.
In the Franco/ Prussian war of 1870 the Prussians actually used one of the first cartridge fired combat rifles...it was referred to as the needle gun...now you know
Jerry Cornelius, incarnation of the Champion Eternal is armed with a "needle" gun that shoots energy propelled crystalline poisonous darts. Seeing how this is from "Elric the musical" I'm pretty sure this is the correct reference point. Interesting fact that there was actually a "needle" gun irl though.
Not only are Hawkwind the masters of the psychedelic music universe.....they also know how to party! (I have partied with them 2x after 2 concerts in the late 80's.) To listen and watch them on stage while I was tripping both times, then afterwards party back stage was truly magical for me! They will always be my spirit hero's forever.
For one who mainly goes for the band's 70's and early 80's work , this was a surprisingly good album .. Dave Brock is to be praised for how he successfully managed to keep Hawkwind's sound up-to-date (up to about 2006 that is).

I always assumed they put it in as a way of alluding to how Jerry (like Elric) was an incarnation of the Eternal Champion, and the needle gun was the Black Swords form in the Cornelius level of the multiverse.

this made up of difrent cuts if the same sing one min Hue is playing a black gibson then it shows him on his yellow gibson kind of funny a bit ago i saw a video of a guitar shop and the owner had boath of Hues guitars and was cleaning them up for sale it was sad to see that i hope they got a good home with beads and all RIP Hue Loyd Langton no budy has played them songs like that ever again most of the hawkwind songs now don t have any lead guitar just Dave Brock who is just as talented Guitar player and i love Brocks old guitar very cool as well .:-)
