I love love love the timestamps, the footage, the explanation and everything else about this video, this is so helpful and fun to watch. usually this kind of video is just a voiceover and some generic footage (not just horizon content, but games in general). so I really appreciate you including screenshots and gameplay that demonstrates each thing you're talking about.
Ah, fireclaws. Of the big enemies of the game, they feel the fairest in terms of bulk, power, and hit boxes. No weirdly delayed hitboxes, no weirdly short health bars, no running around and sniping you with roll-catching ranged attacks before running underground for invulnerable moments. Just a straight up brawl.
I needed this badly, I pay on easier difficulty and try to take everything out from a distance which doesn't work with these guys. Sometimes I need the reminder that I should try other play styles!

These videos are great, really adds to the enjoyment of the game. The shredder master class video by itself completely changed the game for me for the better
As a bonus, once you get the hang of taking these things down with this method, you can reliably farm the Apex variant and start racking up a bunch of Apex Fireclaw hearts. You need a handful to upgrade certain legendary weapons, but you can sell the rest for big shards.

Your setup tips to get the machine roped down is really nice to know. I'll be using that in the future for sure! It seems usable in a lot more situations apart from trying to rope down a machine. I'll think of it in future future fights I'm thinking of putting overdraw coils on the rope caster, but every big machine can be tied down with two overdrawn (fully upgraded) shots, but I like to think it is a usable option maybe I'll try testing it in the future
Thanks! Yeah tying them down is and hitting armor plates for elemental buildup is a tactic I really like when I need to farm specific components. Overdraw would be interesting on a rope caster...I'll have to give that try. Maybe you could get it to tie down big machines in one shot!

Excellent video...again. In the overview of the gear you called the Valiant outfit the Sentinel...but I got it. I always called this approach the "S and M" strategy: Tie them up and punish them. It's one of those other strategies that work well with other machines once you understand the new rules for the ropecasters in this game; it's a classic. I like to shock the canisters and then freeze them...which is fun, but this strategy is more efficient, creative and safer. Thanks for putting in the work, man!
Love your videos. Your strategy definitely helps for the Apex. I have a different strategy for the regular fireclaw, which to me is easier to beat. I put it into the brittle stage right away and the unload my boltblaster. Afterwards i use a smoke bomb and get behind and use its shock canister to put it into shock stage and use a warrior bow to unload it on the leg area where there's no armor. Warrior is easier and fast to use and won't worry about consuming expensive materials. Once the shock meter is about to run out, I shoot another shock canister so it goes immediately back into the shock stage and repeat with the warrior bow. I use burst shot since its more precise on hitting where I want to. When I run out of canisters to shoot, I smoke bomb and repeat first step. Brittle stage and then boltblaster. By this time, I kill it without it ever fighting back. Works every time for me. I play on Ultra Hard so it can work for anyone. But your strategy definitely works for Apex version.

You absolute legend! This really helped me to take down a fireclaw easy to get the sac webbing. Before I was grinding for ages on a single kill and still not getting the sac webbing. Playing on ultra-hard, used "the tie that binds" rope caster, "the sun scourge" for frost arrows, and "eternal vengeance" bolt blaster. It only took three rounds of tying down, freezing, and blasting to kill the beast, and I forgot to use valor surge on the first two, so maybe it could have been done in two rounds. I'm taking more of a laid back approach by the way, not so much for dodging. I hit and run on this thing. Just to the west of the campfire, there is a pond where you can dive down. Usually the fireclaw loses track of you there and goes back to his business quite fast. You can sometimes get hit if it uses the lava ability under water, but it doesn't happen a lot. Thanks for all the tips man, on this and many other videos. I'm gonna go bag myself a couple more fireclaws.

Oh man, I was having *so* much trouble hunting Fireclaws until this. I was using your other favorite go-to, the Ancestor's Return, and it was just *not* working. The discs kept missing, or hitting trees, or I couldn't maneuver enough to catch them, and I just ended up missing shots (and when they did land, the tear damage almost always blew up the giant blaze canister, losing the webbing). As always, your guides are a lifesaver.
Absolute godsend you and this video are! I've been racking my brain over a good strategy to efficiently farm the sac webbing. Was using a 4x upgraded Carja's Bane to get the +25% knockdown and kitted out with knockdown coils to stagger the Fireclaw while still doing damage and using the Elemental Fury valor surge for longer brittle duration. But your method is faster and cleaner for sure. Cheers mate!

Nice guide! I found a rebel Fireclaw in the north and while the Frostclaws in the area were relatively easy to kill even in very hard, that Fireclaw was insane with my mostly half upgraded blue gear at that stage of the story. It took as long as a full Apex Thunderjaw to even get it to half life and even after doing that, I had to run away and the entire area reset because I ran a little too far. At least I still had the knowledge on how to avoid his attacks from the first game. Your guide helped me take it down way more easily. It took 4 rounds of tying it down and I had to hide between round 2 and 3 to reset aggro and kill some of the rebels that went poking their nose around because I have blue weapons that aren't even fully upgraded and I hadn't used the weapon technique yet so I didn't know it kind of locked your aiming so I couldn't target the stuff on his back at first but it was still way faster and easier than whatever I was doing before, especially when I got the hang of the weapon technique by the end.
Best guide video that I needed. Fireclaws are my cryptonite. While traversing through map, if I encounter fireclaw, just a big NOPE appears in front of my eyes.

Great tips. Faced my first one in Forbidden West last night, and was excited to see that diving under the legs works as well as in Zero Dawn. I love the challenge of defeating it without going for the belly, but you know all my spikethrowers seem to gravitate towards it lol.
I wish Guerrilla would give us the ability to set 3-5 custom weapon wheel loadouts, complete with the coils and everything. this loadout you’re suggesting is GREAT for taking down Fireclaws, but it’s so vastly different from what I normally use. It’s such a hassle to go in and swap out individual weapons, then remember where they were in the weapon wheel when I want to switch back to them
I wish GG would let us get OP. Sure, a challenge always is fun but sometimes you wanna give those machines what they deserve. They can put those OP weapons behind ultra hard missions or very long ones, I don't care but at least give us some god tier weapons ffs
@@mamoruchiba752 The Legendary Weapons (esspecially the NG+ Weapons) are all absolute God-Tier and you can one-shot big enemies up to "Normal" difficulty wihtout much hassle. So - I don't understand how GG doesn't allow us to get OP - I feel OP as fuck playing NG+ (Very hard btw)

Definitely agree on the site choice. Much nicer having it be alone for sure. By the way the Icebolt Boltblaster makes for another nice purple weapon to inflict Freeze with Sustained Burst, then switch to your damage based Boltblaster & do the same.
Good point! Yeah I don't run two boltblasters myself, but I should give hat a try. Probably more damage dealt by using the frost bolts compared to frost arrows.

In the spot on the map where you start closest to a fire claw has some imposing trees that you can hide behind and shoot at the fire claw. The fire claw will be stuck using only ranged attacks.
They are strong but if you only fight them for i will call it fun, than it's easier but if you want the one specific material from then, that is where we step into the annoing teritory. Because you can't destroy the belly you need to look what parts are you hitting what make it a longer fight where you could hit even if you don't want to the belly and it explodes and you need to find another one.
@@l.i.t.f.4353 Well, depends. On ultra hard they are pretty hard, but on other levels it's okay. Freeze them, legendary bolt blaster, rinse and repeat. The only problem is ultra hard bc they one shot you lol
Really worth noting that the main benefit to Freezing is the fact that the negation of damage from armor plating becomes nullified, so your attacks will do full normal damage even to armor. This is how you can literally just unload on the foe and hit any part of them for good damage.
Yup good point! I haven't been mentioning that in all my machine hunting guides since I discussed it in detail in my elements video, but maybe I should mention it briefly in these too.
I got my first kill thanks to this guide so that's groovy :) Other than that my main problem right now is getting the ropes to attach. Just now I spent eighteen ropes without tying the fireclaw down so I'm definitely doing something wrong.
Nice! Good work 👍 With the ropecaster, are you drawing it a least partially? If you tap fire it and it hits an armor plate it won’t attach. Also, sometimes when the machine is in the middle of an animation with a lot of movement the ropes won’t attach. Try waiting for it to stop moving so much before firing. Hope that helps!
One of the things I do is, instead of running toward the fireclaw, I get in the trees and use them to take the throw damage. The fireclaw can't charge me without getting stopped by a tree. But it also makes escape from the minor volcano attacks it sends a bit difficult. If you can stay aware of your surroundings and dodge trees as you escape, you "should" be fine (with a double tap roll-away).
since enemy attacks are cheesy af in this game your tactic of dodging towards the machine is how i do with every machine bigger than clawstrider. The game exploits our reaction patterns. It helps slotting the "Dodger" module as well. You can dodge 5 consecutive times before stumbling. Together with your awesome tip of short slide then dodge it wirks splendidly.
Yeah it can be quite annoying to stumble after 3 dodges. That's why I had to figure out the slide-dodge lol. The lack of Dodge Prowess from Zero Dawn and being limited to 3 dodges before a stumble was driving me crazy! The dodger weave can definitely be nice too, as you said!
I was just running around like crazy shooting normal arrows avoiding shooting the component. I either got killed or ended up destroying the component. Thanks for this master class, I will try it.
Awesome advice. Even after watching the video I couldn't seem to immobilize the beast. The thing I missed was the sliding-tie-down. That really makes a difference. Also you don't want to miss the opportunity to stab him when he's knocked over. Once I got him pretty destroyed, even though my second pass was a flop with tie downs while he was dancing around, I was able to use drill spikes and position myself behind some foliage and get him close to the end, then polish him off with frost and impact.

This is a similar but different way of taking down these bad boys that I use. I tend to use advanced shock arrows on the Sun Scourge to shock him place then use the delta sharp shot to start taking canisters off of him. When he starts to get up quickly spam a smoke bomb then hit him again with shock arrows to start tearing the canisters that are further up his back between his shoulders. Rinse and repeat until he's down , never forgetting the smoke bombs. It's not an efficient way of doing it but it's fun. I might try your method as I continue my NG+.
Thanks! These fights are so annoying, and having to damage around the belly area for the sac webbing, adds further to the frustation of having to deal with this machine. I also use the southern site, but I make use of the tree at 7:38, because the fireclaw is sometimes bothered by it, and allows me to avoid some of his attacks. Like you say, never go to the north site, where red watchers will ruin your hunting day. For me the fights are a step back from Zero Dawn, because the machines jump on you too often, which is kind of cheap, and there is little you can do. The grinding for upgrades is also something that I don't really like. There should be different ways for getting these components, to fit different play styles.

One of the easiest big machines to kill honestly. Freeze, then rope, then unload on the buttox w Sustained Burst = Dead Fireclaw :) Good strategy shown here, although you absolutely should have froze it first before roping, and use the stun time from the freezing to rope it. This will also prolong the time the roping lasts.
Yeah flipping the order of freezing and roping can be good too with the brittle stun time, as you mentioned. I prefer to rope first since the brittle state only lasts 25 seconds, but either way works. 25s is plenty of time once you're practiced =)
This game was really starting to wear on me. I started on very hard, probably shouldnt have, but refuse to lower it and have just wanted to give up on it, lol. This renewed my interested in taking on the machines I had real difficulty with. Thanks.

Thanks Emeka! And no, critical damage only increases the strength of a critical hit. Critical hits are only possible for impact damage, so a critical damage coil will only increase impact damage, specifically impact damage dealt with a critical hit. I hope that makes sense.
Just got past the opening section today (got the Shieldwing and the first Tallneck) and I can’t wait to try following your guide! I’m only playing on normal for my first playthrough, but I do plan to go for the ultra hard NG+ trophies. I’m guessing this technique works for UH difficulty as well? This video came just in time. I'm on new game plus and need two Fire Claw Sac Webbings in order to override them. I fought two Fire Claws but ended up destroying the sacs because of drawn out battles.
Wow... I normally don't expect much of tutorials for HFW (mainly because of things like "I cannot hit this damned location"), but this one was really good. I had to buy both the boltcaster and the ropecaster and still managed to take down an Apex Fireclaw in my third attempt (the one where I hit "Critical Strike" instead of starting the Valor Surge doesn't count!)... thank you for this great video... Now I am curious, is there a similar trick with the Frost Claws?
Everytime you destroy one of the shoulder sacs, the frostclaw gets frozen, and they have far less health then fireclaws. Ropem and start the sustained fire with the Shoulder should do the trick.

I'm taking more of a laid back approach by the way, not so much for dodging. I hit and run on this thing. Just to the west of the campfire, there is a pond where you can dive down. Usually the fireclaw loses track of you there and goes back to his business quite fast. You can sometimes get hit if it uses the lava ability under water, but it doesn't happen a lot. Thanks for all the tips man, on this and many other videos. I'm gonna go bag myself a couple more fireclaws.

Oh man, I was having *so* much trouble hunting Fireclaws until this. I was using your other favorite go-to, the Ancestor's Return, and it was just *not* working.
The discs kept missing, or hitting trees, or I couldn't maneuver enough to catch them, and I just ended up missing shots (and when they did land, the tear damage almost always blew up the giant blaze canister, losing the webbing).
As always, your guides are a lifesaver.
Absolute godsend you and this video are! I've been racking my brain over a good strategy to efficiently farm the sac webbing. Was using a 4x upgraded Carja's Bane to get the +25% knockdown and kitted out with knockdown coils to stagger the Fireclaw while still doing damage and using the Elemental Fury valor surge for longer brittle duration. But your method is faster and cleaner for sure. Cheers mate!

Nice guide! I found a rebel Fireclaw in the north and while the Frostclaws in the area were relatively easy to kill even in very hard, that Fireclaw was insane with my mostly half upgraded blue gear at that stage of the story. It took as long as a full Apex Thunderjaw to even get it to half life and even after doing that, I had to run away and the entire area reset because I ran a little too far. At least I still had the knowledge on how to avoid his attacks from the first game.
Your guide helped me take it down way more easily. It took 4 rounds of tying it down and I had to hide between round 2 and 3 to reset aggro and kill some of the rebels that went poking their nose around because I have blue weapons that aren't even fully upgraded and I hadn't used the weapon technique yet so I didn't know it kind of locked your aiming so I couldn't target the stuff on his back at first but it was still way faster and easier than whatever I was doing before, especially when I got the hang of the weapon technique by the end.

Great tips. Faced my first one in Forbidden West last night, and was excited to see that diving under the legs works as well as in Zero Dawn. I love the challenge of defeating it without going for the belly, but you know all my spikethrowers seem to gravitate towards it lol.

I wish Guerrilla would give us the ability to set 3-5 custom weapon wheel loadouts, complete with the coils and everything. this loadout you’re suggesting is GREAT for taking down Fireclaws, but it’s so vastly different from what I normally use. It’s such a hassle to go in and swap out individual weapons, then remember where they were in the weapon wheel when I want to switch back to them

I wish GG would let us get OP. Sure, a challenge always is fun but sometimes you wanna give those machines what they deserve. They can put those OP weapons behind ultra hard missions or very long ones, I don't care but at least give us some god tier weapons ffs
@@mamoruchiba752 The Legendary Weapons (esspecially the NG+ Weapons) are all absolute God-Tier and you can one-shot big enemies up to "Normal" difficulty wihtout much hassle.

Definitely agree on the site choice. Much nicer having it be alone for sure. By the way the Icebolt Boltblaster makes for another nice purple weapon to inflict Freeze with Sustained Burst, then switch to your damage based Boltblaster & do the same.
Good point! Yeah I don't run two boltblasters myself, but I should give hat a try. Probably more damage dealt by using the frost bolts compared to frost arrows.

In the spot on the map where you start closest to a fire claw has some imposing trees that you can hide behind and shoot at the fire claw. The fire claw will be stuck using only ranged attacks.
I feel like fireclaws are the most difficult machine, so this guide helps a lot, thanks 😊
They are strong but if you only fight them for i will call it fun, than it's easier but if you want the one specific material from then, that is where we step into the annoing teritory. Because you can't destroy the belly you need to look what parts are you hitting what make it a longer fight where you could hit even if you don't want to the belly and it explodes and you need to find another one.
Apex slaughter spines are something else
@@l.i.t.f.4353 Well, depends. On ultra hard they are pretty hard, but on other levels it's okay. Freeze them, legendary bolt blaster, rinse and repeat. The only problem is ultra hard bc they one shot you lol

Really worth noting that the main benefit to Freezing is the fact that the negation of damage from armor plating becomes nullified, so your attacks will do full normal damage even to armor. This is how you can literally just unload on the foe and hit any part of them for good damage.
Yup good point! I haven't been mentioning that in all my machine hunting guides since I discussed it in detail in my elements video, but maybe I should mention it briefly in these too.

Other than that my main problem right now is getting the ropes to attach. Just now I spent eighteen ropes without tying the fireclaw down so I'm definitely doing something wrong.
Nice! Good work 👍 With the ropecaster, are you drawing it a least partially? If you tap fire it and it hits an armor plate it won’t attach. Also, sometimes when the machine is in the middle of an animation with a lot of movement the ropes won’t attach. Try waiting for it to stop moving so much before firing. Hope that helps!
One of the things I do is, instead of running toward the fireclaw, I get in the trees and use them to take the throw damage. The fireclaw can't charge me without getting stopped by a tree. But it also makes escape from the minor volcano attacks it sends a bit difficult. If you can stay aware of your surroundings and dodge trees as you escape, you "should" be fine (with a double tap roll-away).
since enemy attacks are cheesy af in this game your tactic of dodging towards the machine is how i do with every machine bigger than clawstrider.
The game exploits our reaction patterns.
It helps slotting the "Dodger" module as well. You can dodge 5 consecutive times before stumbling.
Together with your awesome tip of short slide then dodge it wirks splendidly.

Yeah it can be quite annoying to stumble after 3 dodges. That's why I had to figure out the slide-dodge lol. The lack of Dodge Prowess from Zero Dawn and being limited to 3 dodges before a stumble was driving me crazy! The dodger weave can definitely be nice too, as you said!
Nope. Aloy always stumbles after 3 without weaves or perks that boost your dodge abilities.

I was just running around like crazy shooting normal arrows avoiding shooting the component. I either got killed or ended up destroying the component. Thanks for this master class, I will try it.

Awesome advice. Even after watching the video I couldn't seem to immobilize the beast. The thing I missed was the sliding-tie-down. That really makes a difference. Also you don't want to miss the opportunity to stab him when he's knocked over. Once I got him pretty destroyed, even though my second pass was a flop with tie downs while he was dancing around, I was able to use drill spikes and position myself behind some foliage and get him close to the end, then polish him off with frost and impact.

This is a similar but different way of taking down these bad boys that I use. I tend to use advanced shock arrows on the Sun Scourge to shock him place then use the delta sharp shot to start taking canisters off of him. When he starts to get up quickly spam a smoke bomb then hit him again with shock arrows to start tearing the canisters that are further up his back between his shoulders. Rinse and repeat until he's down , never forgetting the smoke bombs. It's not an efficient way of doing it but it's fun. I might try your method as I continue my NG+.

Thanks! These fights are so annoying, and having to damage around the belly area for the sac webbing, adds further to the frustation of having to deal with this machine. I also use the southern site, but I make use of the tree at 7:38, because the fireclaw is sometimes bothered by it, and allows me to avoid some of his attacks. Like you say, never go to the north site, where red watchers will ruin your hunting day. For me the fights are a step back from Zero Dawn, because the machines jump on you too often, which is kind of cheap, and there is little you can do. The grinding for upgrades is also something that I don't really like. There should be different ways for getting these components, to fit different play styles.

If you have a good shock bow you stun lock the non-apex versions with their canisters, on normal this is usually enough time to kill them.
Yup shocking them can be great too!
One of the easiest big machines to kill honestly. Freeze, then rope, then unload on the buttox w Sustained Burst = Dead Fireclaw :)
Good strategy shown here, although you absolutely should have froze it first before roping, and use the stun time from the freezing to rope it. This will also prolong the time the roping lasts.
Yeah flipping the order of freezing and roping can be good too with the brittle stun time, as you mentioned. I prefer to rope first since the brittle state only lasts 25 seconds, but either way works. 25s is plenty of time once you're practiced =)
This game was really starting to wear on me. I started on very hard, probably shouldnt have, but refuse to lower it and have just wanted to give up on it, lol. This renewed my interested in taking on the machines I had real difficulty with. Thanks.

Thanks Emeka! And no, critical damage only increases the strength of a critical hit. Critical hits are only possible for impact damage, so a critical damage coil will only increase impact damage, specifically impact damage dealt with a critical hit. I hope that makes sense.
Works very well! Another thing that works is Drill Spikes to its legs (I even think you mentioned it). Knocks him down in no time.

Just got past the opening section today (got the Shieldwing and the first Tallneck) and I can’t wait to try following your guide! I’m only playing on normal for my first playthrough, but I do plan to go for the ultra hard NG+ trophies. I’m guessing this technique works for UH difficulty as well? I’m a long ways off from fighting a Fireclaw, but I’m very excited to have a channel I can come to with very useful guides!

This video came just in time. I'm on new game plus and need two Fire Claw Sac Webbings in order to override them. I fought two Fire Claws but ended up destroying the sacs because of drawn out battles.

Wow... I normally don't expect much of tutorials for HFW (mainly because of things like "I cannot hit this damned location"), but this one was really good. I had to buy both the boltcaster and the ropecaster and still managed to take down an Apex Fireclaw in my third attempt (the one where I hit "Critical Strike" instead of starting the Valor Surge doesn't count!)... thank you for this great video...
Now I am curious, is there a similar trick with the Frost Claws?
Everytime you destroy one of the shoulder sacs, the frostclaw gets frozen, and they have far less health then fireclaws. Ropem and start the sustained fire with the Shoulder should do the trick.
