  • The garden is doing pretty well at the moment, and I take a walk through it and look at what's going on.
Nuwe Blare Homestead is a homestead in the Arizona desert. We (try to) grow our own food with our desert garden, we raise chickens and ducks for eggs, and we build the things we need. Homesteading in the harsh Arizona climate is not easy, but we are learning how to use the resources we have at hand to accomplish our goals. We're a South African-American family, so we occasionally share recipes for South African dishes.

we had squash for supper...yellow squash casserole and Eva cooks zukes in a pan with almost no oil. It is amazing. Have Hannah call her and get the dope on how to cook it. Happy that you guys can get a harvest of squash. It is a battle to get them here. SVB and Squash bugs are so bad!

I will! We thankfully have not had either SVB or squash bugs to deal with here. The perks of living in the desert, I guess?

Wow, the okra looks good. Mine is just starting to bloom. We have picked about 300 pounds of cucumbers, 25 pounds of squash, 75 pounds of tomatoes and 120 pounds of potatoes. Looking forward to the peppers. We have picked a hundred mouse melons and about the same of ground cherry. My sikkim cucumber is doing really well and the Metki is doing well this year, too. Do you grow Metki?

Huh. I've never heard of Metki. I'm going to have to try it.

@@NuweBlareHomestead When we lived in Tucson, we started growing the Metki cucumber. They grow really well in the low humidity, they get powdery mildew really bad here. However, this year, I have picked 50 pounds and they are still going...the Sikkim are also doing great. We have picked about 40 of them so far.

Awesome! I'll have to try them out next year.
