His body wears down as time goes on (long limbs, fast twitch more conducive for sprinting). Monfils just needed a coach early on that could convince him of adopting an aggressive game. He won too many matches on stamina and defence. That’s his problem

Beretteni is showing nice consitency since us open 2019 reaching semifinals, and finals in wimbledon 21. I question Gael's tactic of moving so far back to return first serve. He put himself out of position once the rally was established. Better to return near the baseline and give up the occasional ace. Great victory of Matteo's heart! In the sets Monfils won, he was completely destroyed both physically that mentally and in spite of this deserved the victory.
His match with Rafa is going to be interesting. With 2 days of rest, I think Rafa can recover a bit more, so hopefully he'll take out Berretini in a close 5 setter. But I just don't see him getting past Medvedev in any possible scenario!
I think Monfil lost because he did not put enough fear in his opponent, especially on the critical moments. His style of play was very conservative for his level of agility. This is a hard critique for someone like him because he is the most agile, creative shot player on the mens' side. His backand was lacking power which perpetuated the lack of fear from his opponent. He also lacked awareness. Not entirely but mostly this was realized later in the game but not developed upon, transitioned or maintained. Great dig. Great Jibe. Great opportunity to learn and Believe more. He could have won this.
You can the Monfils is striking the ball he is not putting a lot effort in some of shots. Nick Kygrios does some of the same moves. With Monfils could it age catching up with him?
