Everything you described about your growing up in Cuba 🇨🇺 is absolutely Jamaican. The community sharing with each other and looking after each other is totally a Jamaican experience. No difference. But then there is another side like what Usain described. There’s a pretentious way that people are better than the next. A superiority complex is there where persons define what better than the next looks like. Surely there are craziness everywhere. It’s a human condition
What Usain went through is a result of "who the hell does this little country black boy think he is living in our community and bringing his friends up here among us?" There was a newspaper article years ago when Usain was going through that scenario about Sean Paul's wife Jinx telling Usain to go back to where he came from. I was very cut up about that and couldn't belive she was addressing our legend like that but Jamaica is what it is and I am very happy he bought his own house what he should have done in the first place with a pool and big yard where he can have the freedom to entertain and throw his parties as much as he wants abiding by the noise abaitment act. The crux of the problem is he is coming from the country, coming from a humble background and all of a sudden is financially more well off than many probably all of those living in that townhouse complex he lived in back then, I believe envy was killing them.

Yes in the backyard you throw the dirty water but remember this was an apartment at Oaklands, she didn't have a backyard so the only place she could through it was really in the toilet and flush it, maybe if she had her own laundry room with a sink she could throw it there but Oaklands don't have individual laundry rooms.

Hi Flo, I purchased the lovely lemon plant from you in New Kingston which I gave as a gift to my bestie which is growing nicely at her home. I am so sorry about your experience in Jamaica. I see that there were a lot of misunderstandings along the way. 1st Usain's experience should not be used as an analogy, he was a home owner in a complex he was not renting, it is different. I have lived in a house all my life (owned etc.) I recently bought an apartment and yes it is completely different, the complex has pages of rules e.g. no workmen after 5pm, any water being emptied whether from me renovating or cleaning my apartment must be emptied in the laundry sink not in the planter box outside my door or any outdoor green area etc. I don't know of Jamaicans emptying cleaning water in toilets. Wasn't there a laundry sink? The landlord you had 1st did not tell you the truth about no dogs being allowed. The complex in Papine your landlord was responsible to repair the awning that has holes, didn't anyone ask? Verandahs, porches etc. Not only in Jamaica are not used to store car parts (storage)? Wasn't there a back room or storage enclosed area. where the car parts could be placed where not visible? (It's civic pride) The neighbors should speak directly with the owner not you regarding any issues. My grandma when she was alive also clean from back to front and throw the water on the lawn, plant roots outside and she is a Jamaican, the difference is it's her home not an apartment complex with a bag of rules and regulations. I wish we had boarding schools in Jamaica. It would be expensive, but if subsidized by the government, it would result in our youth being exposed to a more balanced environment that would teach civic values, maintain culture, and reduce classism. I have a Cuban friend who went to boarding school. As a kid, I knew people who went to Munro, and these were the values they spoke of.
Jamaica has changed, when we were there in the 1970s, you did not did not hear these kind of stories. And thinking back, not even from the people I went to school with. The world has changed, but you have to know who you are. Nobody is better than anyone else.
Separate society for decades. They look down on people from certain areas. Some of most genuine, kind, loving, educated people come from where they look down on. You find classicism in the workplaces in Jamaica a lot as well. Some are shock how amazing your English languages are on point. You'll get comment as such: Don't tell anyone you're from that inner city area."
At the end of the day when the 5 of them choose fi gang up pan her she should have cuss them out and pointed out how comes when Mr man/husband was dere dem know fi whole dem corner and leave us alone but as soon as dem seem left the complex dem find strength, powers and courage. Gwaan talk and watch when him come back how we ago deal wid all a uno...
That happens ( unity and non envity) when everyone is similar class. When there are differences in wealth, there are always jealousy, envy, people who want to steal you name it..
Exactly. I saw elders throwing water in the garden-even from washing vegetables and fruits. Kingston people act like uppidy and down know nothing as all they worry about is appearance.
Your experience was what my experience was growing up in Jamaica. We shared with the neighbors. Everyone looked out for each other. It was more like a village community. What Usain is describing is what happend in many countries and communities. Old Money losing control of their establishment and new ideas taking form. I am happy for him and continue to wish him well. Remember when people resist new it is because of fear and the unknown. Know that when you go into a new space it is best to know the customs and lifestyle of your new community before you move in. I don't think the people were badminded, I think they did not understand the shift.
I live in the UK I’m a compliant office in housing and always thinking these people in the UK are pity. I know understand it’s same silly behaviour worldwide it’s sad. In the Uk their a program called “ neighbour from hell” it’s crazy I have a lady write in once to say her neighbour put banana peel in her bin or The neighbour have too much visit. That’s what I have to investigate on daily basic. I can’t cuss the British anymore it’s happening in my beloved JA it’s sad behaviour of people.
Good story telling ✅️ most Jamaicans are adapting the American way of living like the strict codes of apartments and we not socializing anymore 😢 now you are a land owner and doing the same thing to others what those people did to you, going to meetings and complaining you don't want nobody come live beside you cause they going to suck out all the air out the mountain top 😢
So when I see like athletes etc put themselves amongst them I have to wonder seeing that the money them spend for those properties they could buy one parish and build a castle 😅 but out culture always cause the poorer class when they comes into money is to move uptown to show that I am like u see I am here . SMH
I totally agree with you that classicism is rampant in Jamaica and the reason is how people from the so called "ghetto" behave. Behavior is the root of classicism in Jamaica, not poverty even though poverty is the root of corruption and crime. Let me paint a picture so you better understand, "a ghetto man see a girl he likes and calls to her and she ignores him and he will 99% respond with badwords, cussing out loud trying to disgrace this girl in the worse way, unlike a man from a middle or upper class will just go about his business peacefully realizing that this girl is not interested. Another example, you go to an event where all can go and you accidently step on a ghetto person's toe and it's hell and bangarang to the point of you may end up losing your life, sometimes saying sorry isn't enough. people in the inner cities have a don't care attitude and will display their boisterous behavior anywhere without shame. I don't know if you want to associate with people like that, do you?
God was setting you guys up to find that land and good neighbors. If things had gone well in those previous situations, you guys may have been complacent
Tbh... I've always found throwing dirty mop water in the toilet as nasty, and what u were doing sound more normal and sanitary.. All the filth from the floor ur throwing in the same toilet tht you're going to sit your bottom and other sensitive parts on.. Regardless if you the toilet clean after. People should throw dirty mop water outside or in a outdoor sink used to wash mops.
I agree with you dejjianndean1974. Dirty mopping floor water should be thrown outside in the back yard - way back from the house. It is unsanitary and filthy to pour that dirty gross water into your toilet -- I don't know who made that rule to pour the water into your toilet as I've never ever heard that before, or know anyone who does that. Just thinking about it makes me so uncomfortable .
Flor I do not think what you experienced in those uptown apartment type communities is typical of the wider Jamaica. I think it’s classism which is an uptown Kingston issue. Bolt had that issue as well. Sweeping out the house and throwing the dirt outside in the garden is done in many areas especially in the countryside and small towns and districts in Jamaica. I’ve never lived in any apartment complex in Jamaica. Most of my neighbors have been good except for one which was horrible. But I had two excellent neighbors at different times who were almost like family the way we shared things and moved between each other’s house and went to their family reunion too. Moved to the USA and all that changed and I have my own home with a yard in the Long Island part of New York. Two neighbors talks with me, a couple others only a hi and many will look into your face while passing your yard and not even say hi or good day.
Oakland is now uptown ghetto. Never know people in there living in studio. And they look down on Portmore, at least portmore studiios have a wash area u could throw your dirty water
I do security guard work back in the 80s with guardsman and let me tell u i worked in most of these super rich communities and let me tell you it was an awaking coming from country living downtown. These people some have a level of u are doing your job most they see u as a lower class of people. Their luxury life is something else but i have to big up ANGIE TEMPLAR and Mr. Beckford from 11 Norbrook Road rich yes but treat you as human being not like those over Norbrook Mews
@mgrant8376 because they are not living their anymore and remember we are living in a digital world and I am talking about 1986 /90 . If u know those areas they are fully under security go drive through those areas stop and start look around and see how fast security come check u out
I’m sorry you experienced so much classism. In Jamaica some people would like to use their address, their fancy cars and their jobs as a means of separating themselves from the ‘lesser class’. It’s deeply rooted in our psychology. Those people crave a sense of belonging to a better class, beven thinking they have to completely separate themselves from their roots. They are what we call ‘arrivists’ and they get very prananoid about their social standing mi dear. To them it’s all or nothing. They throw away their humanity for belonging to the upper class. It’s coming from slavery days; some black folks would do anything to move up the social ladder and attempt to prevent others from rising too. It’s a scarcity mindset kind of thing. They think there’s not enough at the table for everyone to eat, so they get to the top and gatekeep.
Usain Bolt's problem is his Darker Skin complexion..in Jamaica on average the wealthier people living there have lighter skin/straighter nose ie more white features ...You are from a different country but you would be more accepted by them[uptown Jamaicans] than someone looking like Usain Bolt, just by how you Look ...your problem it is just cultural plus interpersonal difference on your part ..but it is NOT Racial/Complexion like Usain Bolt's
No Flor, you were not discriminated against because of your age while living in Papine, the problem was that you were changing the appearance of the complex by putting up tarpaulins, car parts on the varandah where it is visible and really giving it a ghetto look. You have to understand that in certain areas middle class and upper class areas where you find professionals, highly paid professionals and property value is high it is expected that all the homes should be well kept, well maintained, etc. If you take a tour of the various communities in Jamaica including ghettos you will see the difference and you will understand after seeing ghetto communities why middle and upper class areas are kept/look cleaner, more inviting, quiet, homes well maintained not rundown looking. So when you move in there and start putting up tarpaulins, storing car parts to the front of your space, etc., people frown upon you, people are displeased with that kind of behavior. I don't know what living in Cuba is like but it is different in Jamaica and other democratic counties where we take pride in how we live, our homes and even the cars we drive because it shows who we are. Likewise your stay at Oklands, no we don't throw dirty water in the front, we don't water our plants with dirty water. Try and learn about our culture, the way we live, the different communities from country, ghetto, middle to upper before you give up on Jamaica.
You would have had a better experience if you were living in the country areas in Jamaica. Country neighbors are very friendly we share everything and help each other out. Moved to NY nobody have time to talk to their neighbors. 😂😂😂😂

Flo what you are describing Kingston uptown midtown living. Most people in jamaica live a different lifestyle call country life. If you were a Jamaican and from the country side and didn't go to a traditional high school don't matter how much money your parents have and look like you you would get the same pushback.my sister marry a Kingston man she met in USA. When he comes to the country he treats everyone like he is above them and call her country gal when he gets upset with her. I am very happy that your husband stood by your side and support you.
But they r happy with the chinese moving in and disrespecting them but treat they own like that black people don't like each other but then complain when other races don't like them

Jamaica has changed, when we were there in the 1970s, you did not did not hear these kind of stories. And thinking back, not even from the people I went to school with. The world has changed, but you have to know who you are. Nobody is better than anyone else.
The 80s going forward things change
It existed, but INTERNET and Social media cellular phones and UTUBERS were not KNOWN or a means to earn a living
Yes but money talks unfortunately why people are like that.
Thank you @@gervanmyers3066
Separate society for decades. They look down on people from certain areas. Some of most genuine, kind, loving, educated people come from where they look down on. You find classicism in the workplaces in Jamaica a lot as well. Some are shock how amazing your English languages are on point. You'll get comment as such: Don't tell anyone you're from that inner city area."
Everytime something happened in Jamaica, some people think that is only in Jamaica, these things happen
After the cleaning, you should've said 'Cut an' clear all crosses,' and I bet that neighbor wouldn't say a word afterwards
She don't understand that traditional practice 😅
This Cuban lady behave like a real Jamaican
You have described the social reasons why in Jamaica, there are so many behavioral issues. Not having their time occupied with useful purpose .
That's so sad but hush.
That happens ( unity and non envity) when everyone is similar class. When there are differences in wealth, there are always jealousy, envy, people who want to steal you name it..
Miserable badmind petty people. You are not bashing Jamaica. You are telling us your unique experiences.
Exactly
Completely shocked 😲 that you had to throw the water in the toilet. And I'm a Jamaican, but country folks and town folks do things differently...
Exactly. I saw elders throwing water in the garden-even from washing vegetables and fruits. Kingston people act like uppidy and down know nothing as all they worry about is appearance.
You are the Cuba that I saw on several visits
In the Uk their a program called “ neighbour from hell” it’s crazy
I have a lady write in once to say her neighbour put banana peel in her bin or The neighbour have too much visit.
AM NOT GOING TO CUSSED YOU. I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH.🖤💛💚🇯🇲🇯🇲
Instead of living in their neighborhood, go and build your own. Number one, you have the resource, you have swagger, and you are a global brand.
That's called "Tek set" on you.A lot of people are like, just decide to be nuisance to others.
Tek set on you 😂😂😂
Classicism is pretty rampant in Jamaica
So when I see like athletes etc put themselves amongst them I have to wonder seeing that the money them spend for those properties they could buy one parish and build a castle 😅 but out culture always cause the poorer class when they comes into money is to move uptown to show that I am like u see I am here . SMH
You have the same in the UK.
A lot of UK folks who didn't like the class system emigrated to Canada, Australia, USA.
If you live in the apartment or condo in the US thats how you clean. Dirt goes in the garbage bin
❤❤
But time has changed now. People are more progressive now and can afford the same luxuries and lifestyle so I think it’s different now
Why would you share their names and address on a public forum?! This is incredibly risky for their safety and security.
May God bless their soul
@@angelwill9474nothing has changed. More poor people finding success but they are still scoffed at
@mgrant8376 because they are not living their anymore and remember we are living in a digital world and I am talking about 1986 /90 . If u know those areas they are fully under security go drive through those areas stop and start look around and see how fast security come check u out
I don't go too far with naibours
Good content this happen to almost everyone them don’t want you to elevate from poor mess am so glad you hilight it
Resent me is here in the USA, it is everywhere. Even people who have moved up to higher class, they do not want you to move up. Oh no!
Jesus and Dawn Christ are here in Sebring Florida
It's the same thing all over the world
Usain Bolt's problem is his Darker Skin complexion..in Jamaica on average the wealthier people living there have lighter skin/straighter nose ie more white features ...You are from a different country but you would be more accepted by them[uptown Jamaicans] than someone looking like Usain Bolt, just by how you Look ...your problem it is just cultural plus interpersonal difference on your part ..but it is NOT Racial/Complexion like Usain Bolt's
also what you arre describing is not really 'uptown' in terms of wealth level of your neighbours ..more like middle class mid town people
No Flor, you were not discriminated against because of your age while living in Papine, the problem was that you were changing the appearance of the complex by putting up tarpaulins, car parts on the varandah where it is visible and really giving it a ghetto look.
blessed love me sister am jamaican from the negril are but i k ow mu h a out.cou try living this how the world is just have to learn to live with every one the day of harvest will😮come hope you are having a superb time maners and respect thanks for your story next time

Watch the American series called Fear thy Neighbor.😮
Badmind is everywhere. Who badmind like Yankees . I lived in Germany, USA and other places badmind is everywhere..
Flor the word you were trying to call is tarpaulin.
Must be an uptown thing!
That lady telling you to throw water in the toilet is also wrong.
That's how apartments dwellers worldwide disposed used cleaning water
@@gervanmyers3066 -- that doesn't make it right or sanitary, but I can understand if you're in a high-rise apt. But that should be the ONLY exception.
Lol yhey said you had no 'standing' oh no ''
I thought my experiences were anomalies! 😅
My family’s live in Georgia
I enjoy watching your vlogs and lisening to your different stories about your life story you look alot like usain bolt baby mother am going to stray a little from your story my mom bought her prescription glases from one of your store and the frame was no good didn't even last her a month
But they r happy with the chinese moving in and disrespecting them but treat they own like that black people don't like each other but then complain when other races don't like them
So you're telling me that living in Spanish Town and living Uptown is the same? Thank you, lol
the neighbour on my left full a goat and beside that one is a chicken owner so goat and chicken sent and one bag a fly when rainfall fly no stop kill me. the neighbour on my right full a bush and a bay wasp and bees and mongoose over deh. affi constantly a pay man to cut fi them bush cause them bush a spread and attacking my sweetsop tree and cherry trees
Yes it's a shock! This woman is Rude
I'm sorry‼️ How you must clean your veranda then⁉️🤔
My grandmother always told me never to sweep your hair outside, because people will use it for witchcraft...which is true. But I have never heard of anything else.
But, I was raised in Country. Sooo...🇯🇲
True
Throwing dirty water in the toilet is not a Jamaican culture!!!!!!!! My grandma is now 98yrs old and still cleaning house. I never see, hear or told to throw dirty water in a toilet.
I love my neighbors ..they are your third eye ..
The gutter! OMG!
Noooooo not in the toilet
Is your husband Jamaican
He is
