The original isn't particularly interesting harmonically at all, and the chord progression is maintained almost 1:1. The only thing missing are the occasional vocal harmonies, which mind you, were very simplistic as well (usually simply a third below the main vocal line). Ironically, this version probably displays a larger amount of musical virtuosity considering the greatly increased tempo and the more varied drum track. Time to take off those rose-colored glasses!
Firstly: Just because you play faster does not mean you're better. That's where many are wrong. Good music is all about how you put it together, not how fast you play it. That's one of the reasons why The Beatles are still so popular. And secondly: The drumming in this version is no more advanced than in the original. And thirdly: The harmony in the original is quite good and Barry Mann has a much better voice. But having said that everyone has their own taste in music. Personally I like 50's rock n roll and doo wop best, what you like and what others like I can not change and it's up to you what you like. But that music is not better even if it's faster is a pure fact.
