You can use this same process with burlap, denim, or canvas. It's commonly called Micarta and is used to make scales for pocket knives and other products.

Buy yourself a pair of pinking shears, it’s helps prevent the fabric from unraveling when cutting and working with your layup! I’ve only used them a handful of times myself, but our sheet metal and composite guys use them all the time when laying up repairs, I’m an aircraft mechanic

I wish you would post how to make. Your glow core carbon fiber for ring blanks. Want to make a ring with ashes. So don’t want to buy a block as you can find anywhere. Want to learn how to make it.
Looks like just layers of glow apoxy to create the CF. Or fiberglass sheets inside the CF to make the glow core.
Would this be something you would ever post how you make it?

Yep you can actually just remove a strand by grabbing and sliding it off the twill where you what to cut. It will leave holes in the fabric that will guides you during the cutting process.
You will have a nice and straight carbon ply, without all that fuzzy things on the edges :)

  • @mtraven23

bro, we all know how to shop @ homedepot 🤣🤣
how do you feel about the resin infused fabric that you just layout, vac & heat ? Seems like it would be easier...I've never done carbon fiber, but a lot of fiberglass, wet layups are always a mess.
why the wood clamping & not vacuum? Vacuum applies even pressure, your particle board clamp does not
lastly, I'm interested in some application where low thermal expansion is critical, do you( or anyone) know anything about how to accomplish that?

Carbon fiber has Sharp edges...like fiberglass similar to Asbestos which I've been exposed to for Decades..
A learned hand lamination of fiberglass resin starting age 8
They were part of my father's fiberglass Electro Acoustic speaker enclosures..which reduces eae fatigue " distortion " by 86% over Conventional box shaped enclosures
      MORE DB..no cochlea damage
You have to Layer Carbon Fiber with Shapes and patterns equal to the Exponential curvature of the Edges..
Not just Linear Layers like stacking paper...you can build flex joints internally in carbon fiber lamination.
And multiple layers of Different Components..
Point being Wear a RESPIRATOR not a dust mask unless you want lacerated skin eye's and Avaloaie lung sacs..

okay ! question more like a comment. i will save you 95% of your loss. I will tell you a trick that will yield 95% of used carbon fiber.
Measure out your sheet for cutting mark with nail polish or paint take 5 min epoxy draw 2 parallel lines along side you mark. the parallel lines of epoxy must have a space of 1/10th of an inch. let dry and cut with scissors between the 2 lines of dried epoxy. now the sheets don't come apart the weave stays in tact and you wont have to deal with strands of misfit carbon fiber on the finish of your plate. all that needs to be removed on wet saw is the thin line of 5minute epoxy. simple! send me a 3 yard roll of blue black carbon fiber or Kevlar for the savings . thank you. hehehehe! enjoy your savings
