In this video I walk you through a streamlined diagnosis of an F150 that won't crank intermittently or will crank but not start all of a sudden. The dead giveaway is the clicking noise in the engine compartment.

Thanks Brian - this video got me off the street, in route to work at 4:45 this morning, in the rain. I was able to swap in a good fuse, and go the last 2 miles to work. I got my truck off the street safely and will check the fuel pump module when I get it home. I owe ya! Chuck in NE Kansas

This just saved me a lot of stress. My truck was no start no crank. This was exactly what was wrong with my truck. I have an 04 F150 FX4. I didn't have the clicking in the engine compartment, that was the only difference. But my Fuel drive module was cracked just like this one and my fuse 34 was shot. This happened out of nowhere, came out of a restaurant and truck wouldn't start. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!!

I love the way you take your time to educate D.I.Y'RES, I'm one of those that don't like mechanics around my area so I choose to fix it myself all the time. And I always go to your channel to find out before any other channels. I've learned how to do a timing chain on my f150 5.4 3v thanks to you and now how to diagnose this problem of truck dying while driving. Much love and much appreciated 👍🏾 thank you so much!!!

That was actually quite easy. Followed all steps. I added new battery to the mix. Put it together not really thinking it would start...lol. But it did. Added note...I could tell this module had been replaced once already which added to my doubt of a fix. But the "LiL" Puddle Jumper 2 is back on the road! Thank You so much. Another added note. I attempted no other fixes. I typed in my symptoms and your video popped up. I ordered the part off Ebay and went with it.

Great video. That same poorly designed and poorly placed Fuel Pump Control Module is also present on later model F150s and Expeditions. It was certainly the cause of these problems on my 2010 Expedition. The No-start problem seemed to start with wonky relays in the engine bay fuse box, and the only temporary fix was for the under-hood relays to be changed around by my daughter every morning to get it to start so she could go to work, but I finally heard about the Fuel Pump Control Module issue, as I was about to drop the fuel tank and replace the pump. I learned that the in-tank OEM pumps are extremely reliable, and that fuel pump/fuel pressure problems are usually caused by a very corroded Fuel Pump Control Module. However, many people are happy to replace your fuel pump if you ask them to, and will usually put in a new module to make it all run. All I had to do was to replace the Fuel Pump Control Module, and the problem was solved for my daughter.

Just bought an '07 with 82k and the spare tire in bed. In process of putting spare back noticed the broken module. Broken exactly the same in video, aluminum frame of it split in half crumbling. Wondered what it was, this was the first video I ran across. Believe it or not the truck still ran for as good as a Ford and a 5.4L can. I'm glad I found this video and have replaced module so future owner doesn't have this happen. I'm glad I'm a GM guy, Ford is so bass akwards in the way they build stuff. Thanks to #FordTechMakuloco

I have no problems, but after watching what could be a future issue I went ahead and lowered spare tire and removed module to make sure it was in okay condition! All good, just cleaned out the sand grudge etc on the module, bar attached and sprayed and cleaned using rust protection. Thanks again for your help!

This past month I’ve spent 4600$ at ford and you’ve literally described every single thing wrong with my truck. Checked the fuses and sure enough they were blown. I had a nice spare fuse for now but I don’t have the cash anymore to just buy the module yet. THANK YOU so much. Ford swore they checked up and down but yeah… they wanted to now replace my pcm along with all fuel injectors as well as other things that totaled up to over 7000$. I will change this in a week or so. But thank you so much man.

@@ronc4146 so unfortunately this didn’t fix my problem. My truck would still act the same. Which when my truck warmed up all the way, when you’d go into the store or have it off, when you’d go to turn it back on it didn’t want to start. Could’ve been the fuel pump but I’m not sure. Got rid of the truck in the end.

I know this is an older video. But I have also ran into the same issues with this generation f150. When the a/c clutch shorts out it will also drag down the system and give the same exact symptoms except for blowing that fuse. It will make the ses, battery and theft light go erratic blinking and you also get the intake shutter and throttle body clicking. As well as it will stall out the engine while driving or idling like someone shut the key off.

I just had the fuel pump module control replaced by a Ford dealer. Part cost $160, and labor was $168, total invoice was 350.00. All for a part that is mounted on a crossbar underneath the truck, practically by the rear axle. this is where constant water and wintertime salt gets thrown. Hurray for corosion. How clever a spot to mount it instead of perhaps under the hood. Got a better idea....why not mount the PCM on the same crossbar by the rear axle for constant water and wintertime salt because those are $1,300.00 and could really improve Ford dealer's bottom line. I just had a PCM installed the week before the fuel pump module got installed this week.

Thank you sir for your video! I recently bought a 2006 Ford E350 5.4L that just shutoff while idling in my driveway. Then when I turned ignition key it had CHECK GUAGES and a picture of wrench lit up, but no crank. Battery was good so I changed out the oil and oil filter(looked like hadnt been changed in while) thinking it might be the oil pressure being low. That did not fix it. However, I stumbled upon your video and learned a lot! Thanks to you I went looking through the fuse box for a blown fuse and wouldnt you know there was a blown 20A fuse in slot 23. Not sure if this has anything to do with the Fuel Pump Driver Module. However, now that I know where it is, and it looks old, I'm going to replace it before it goes bad while I'm out somewhere, or causes damage to the harness.
    Thanks again..much appreciated!!

First time it happened was a real trip because I never heard of the fuel pump driver module befor, if you don't know its there you are in for one hell of a good time trying to figure out why the fuel pump is not working, trust me.

Claude Rains why on earth would you put dielectric grease on relay terminals? By definition dielectric prevents electric current from flowing. It is used to seal out the elements from corrosion, not to help continuity. Amazing how many people have this bassackwards.

Hey Brian, got a question for you if you have a minute. Symptoms: Truck starts no problem after sitting over night. If I drive somewhere then turn it off... then go to start it again after a short period, it cranks and cranks and stumbles and tries to start but won't start right away... takes a few tries then stumbles to a start. The dash keeps reading "check gauges". I checked for codes with my OBD2 reader... no codes/problems listed. ALSO... when driving down the road... if I hit ANY incline... when I'm going around 25-35 mph in 2-3 gear it will stumble... seems like a misfire. Again, check codes and it reads nothing for misfires. SOMETIMES when I go to start it after I have driven somewhere then restart shortly after... IF I wait a little bit after turning key to power on... it will start with no issue. What the heck is going on? Fuel pump?... but misfiring only in a certain range on incline...? Hard 2nd start with "check gauges" but not first start up? Also seems to be running "rough" at idle SOMETIMES at stop lights... other times it's running smooth. Also, when it's running rough at idle, if I put it in neutral and give a little gas to increase RPM's it's smooths out with no roughness. Please help. Any advice is greatly appreciated sir.

Thank you for a good video ..I have a question have a 2005 5.4 180lk on mileage it was struggling to go over 30 mph misfires a surging under acceleration i read and watch Ed a video that by disconnecting fuel pressure sensor vacuum hose will raise pressure it didn't ,my pressure seems to fluctuate at 39 psi at 2.7v I took hose off drive it same thing , I replaced plugs and coils and then by passed fuel pressure control module the prressure spiked to 82+psi at 4.8 volts and it became a totally different truck ..snappy and pretty fast no surging no blinking check engine light pulls under hard heavy throttle to redline , it was late when we finished I parked it plugged the control module back in I haven't driven it yet plugged back in but how do I determine if it's the fuel pressure sensor or control driver I don't wanna jus throw parts at it but how can I get the truck to increase fuel pressure with the control module hooked up or does it suppose to

I had this similar problem and yes the fuel driver module needed to be replaced and I replaced the fuse and the battery but to my dismay after I got everything back together the problem still exists. When the key is on it does nothing but with the key out the air conditioning runs and the anti theft light keeps flashing rapidly. I have know idea what to do. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Long overdue updates. Turns out there was corrosion in the fuse box. Now works like it should. Now new problems have arose such as engine fail safe happens off and on. Looking into it tonight. Just might sell the damn thing and get something else.

I stumbled apon this bad part when I removed my bed to paint the frame. It was cracked in half mostly because it wasn't supported correctly. I added washers to the one side when I replaced it. The way it was mounted it was be forced to crack.

Gidday Brian; I have just enjoyed your video on the F150 FPDM. As power was realised on both sides of fuse # 34; did you have to replace the complete CJB to replace the failed diode at contact-A? Many thanks; we enjoy your work and appreciate your efforts.

+gerard kavanagh No the power loop through is from the failed shorted fpdm so once it is disconnected the power should be gone.

Thank u for that excellent video. I replaced a fuel pump on an 04 Expedition. Still no fuel pressure. Tuned out to b that little tiny fuel pump relay soldered into CJB. I tied to solder a new one in there. To many little joints. Ended up buying whole new box. Why can't they just put a replaceable relay like everyone else?? Once again, thank u! And I watch every video u come out with

My 2004 Ford sport trac will start and stop within seconds. I have changed the fuel pump three times until I got it scanned just now. It came up with P1233. I have located it and removed it. I want to get a "Tokunbo" used one as it is not easy to come by brand new one here in Nigeria and when you get one, the price is not just affordable. So, I'm going to get a fairly used one and check if the problem will be solved. I just hope it solved the problem. Ford cars are just problematic.

Great video's! I have a 2004 F150 that starts, runs and drive's perfectly from cold. shut it off hot and it won't start, flashing 15 on the theft warning light (key not programmed into pats). Let it cool down and it starts like a champ. No DTC's are set (that I can read with consumer reader). Any thoughts?
Checked fuel module in back and very little corrosion, tried new keys (pgm fine cold), new PCM relay, all fuses good. Serviced grounds around PCM/battery and fusebox.

When my 2004 Ford F150 wouldn't start I turn the key on and try to start it I noticed that the radio went from FM to a.m. so the module shorting out back feeding changing my radio losing memory on my radio maybe another indication along with the blinking security light and the fuse testing okay with the test gauge but fuse burned out like you're talking about again thanks for the video
