29:43 - I never realized the symbolism, until now. Since, his father never hugged him, he's giving himself that hug (and sign of love) he so wanted for so long.
21:36 I would hardly call that an argument. Bernie just listens, never raises his voice, and shows so much concern, even if Elton is yelling straight in his face.
Fun fact: Taron Egerton actually sang all the songs in the movie, himself! Also Elton helped work on the movie so it’s very very accurate and he even said “my life wasn’t PG so the movie shouldn’t be” or something along those lines…the fact they weren’t afraid to show all the low points of his life (which are so incredibly important) makes Rocketman so much better than Bohemian Rhapsody
Impressive movie - it had me mesmerized when he first walked through the door in that demon outfit. Now THAT'S how one makes an entrance! Great reaction!
Elton is already in the history books. He was the first artist ever to have an album enter the charts at #1 and he followed that with his next album doing the same thing. He was responsible for about 3% of worldwide record sales between 1972 and 1976 (that’s about 1 in 4 records sold was an Elton John record for 4 years). His single Candle in the Wind (1997) is the highest selling single in chart record history. White Christmas possibly tops it because that came out before charts were recorded. And he has been named the #1 male solo artist of all time. He’s also had a single in the charts every year for 32 consecutive years.
@@e-1074 Billboard Hot 100 names Elton #1 male solo artist of all time, 3rd overall behind Madonna and the Beatles. There are others that rank him #1 British male solo artist of all time, 3rd overall behind Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley.
Probably my favorite movie of the last few years. I bought one of Elton’s “best of” CD sets years ago so I knew many of his songs (I am a pianist so loved playing his stuff!) but there were still lots I knew by sound but didn’t realize were his! Amazing arrangements in this movie, love taron’s voice, and the acting was top notch! I loved it so much I designed an entire show choir show for my high school kids at school around the songs of Elton John :). Full two hour show packed full of hits from one man is amazing! We had lots of cool costumes of course, and lots of light up stuff and fog machines for Rocketman, and we glued led sticks on our shoes and has light up laces and did “Bennie and the Jets” in the dark! I choreographed fun dances to “Crocodile Rock” and “I’m still standing” and “I’m gunna love me again” the theme song from the movie. Of course we had lots of power ballad solos too, and songs from the Lion King. I also made modern arrangements of songs like Tiny Dancer, and Border Song, and one of my talented girls did the Sarah Baraellis arrangement of “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” (listen to that - she is amazing too!). Got to have the show right before covid hit last year the first week of March 2020, and then the world shut down. It’s like the magic of Elton made the timing work out! I was supposed to see him live last summer, still waiting for that one. Sorry for the long message; just wanted to share my story about the show!! I haven’t found many who reacted to the movie so you got my attention. Thanks for a great reaction! Hopefully you’re an Elton fan for life now! The movie soundtrack is a blast to listen to, every single song.
Thank you for reacting to this amazing movie. I am a long time fan of Elton John, but I too was surprised that this film wasn't "about" music. It was a full on musical! Also, I love your open heart. Thank you for telling us something about your experience.
Want a sample of his musical genius? Watch the full concert in Central Park 1980. Astounding piano solos.Great stage presence. Showmanship. Also check out the "oven manual song" on TH-cam, where he is given the owner's manual to an oven & writes music to it on the spot. Genius!
I was born in 66 and really started getting into music in the 70s and Elton John was definitely one of my favorites I didnt know he was gay till the 80s but that didnt matter to me his music just made you want to sing and dance now 40 plus years later Im introducing his music to my grandchildren and they love it! So even after all of Eltons demons that plagued him in the beginning he never let himself die he just overcame everything and became ICONIC!! Great reaction young man hope you become a music fan of Elton John like I have for decades!!
This movie, man... I saw the part where he's crying on the phone trying to tell his mom he's gay and she says he'll always be alone and no one will ever really love him. I also saw a little of what came before. But as soon as Elton's mom said that, I had to leave the room, it was too emotional. As a depressed autistic pansexual trans man, that really hit hard. I still haven't finished the movie, even though it's been months. Once I have, I'll come back. Yours was the only review on my search with a rainbow on it. When it comes to LGBT representations in movies, my favorite reviews tend to be ones that show they are excited and happy to be reviewing something with gay characters. Anyway, I'll go to sleep, tomorrow I'll finish Rocketman, probably crying some more along the way, and then I'll pop right on back to watch the reaction! I like reactions.
An interesting bio-pic comparison in the category of gay superstars would be "Rocketman" and "Bohemian Rhapsody". Elton John's wife and Freddie Mercury's fiancé. are interesting side plots. But what I find more interesting is Elton John as a character narrating this fantasia of his life. I love that it is framed as him speaking at a 12-step circle. He arrives fully flamboyant, in full demon regalia. As the film wears on, he gets progressively less flamboyant; his costuming is edited little by little, until he's pretty normal looking. Meanwhile, his narration gets more and more honest. You said something interesting early on, about his costumes and stage persona being like armor. Over the course of the film, Elton needs less armor, blames fewer people, and accepts himself and his own failings more. And the whole point of therapy and 12-step programs is to forgive others, forgive yourself, and learn to set boundaries. Some folks had trouble with this film, but I liked how this was done, and as time goes on and through additional viewings, I come to like it more and more. Note: Before Taron Egerton was signed for this film, he was in the 2016 animated film "Sing" where he performed "I'm Still Standing".
Small bit of trivia: 2 of the songs in the movie ("I want love" and "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" (The first third of it)) were sung by 15-year-old Kit Connor. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kit_Connor
Bernie Taupin 'left' because he was burned out too...and when Elton fired the original band (via an intern, over the phone, with no explanation) he put together a 'better' band. The new bassist had an affair with Bernie's wife (the woman was the 'Tiny Dancer' from the song). It was more than what is shown here. And that abusive manager did introduce Elton to cocaine, in 1974...and Elton was hooked immediately (to the point that he couldn't control himself). All the songs were Elton John songs.
Yay! I’ve been hoping someone would react to Rocketman for ages - I don’t know how I missed this! Great right? Such a wonderful film. I was more familiar with Elton than you were going in (probably cause I’m British) but had never listened to an album of his or thought of him too much. The film made me a fan!
Great, great review. You should TH-cam Mark Kermode + Rocketman. A respected BBC movie reviewer, his reaction speaks for itself. Actor who played his collaborator of 50 years was Billy Elliott ( brilliant movie ).
This was a good film, but as an Elton fan, it annoys me how the band was written out of the story. The Troubadour scene should have had Nigel Olsson on drums/vocals and Dee Murray on bass/vocals. They were a trio. All three were amazing. Listen to the live album 11-17-70 to see...I mean hear what I mean.
No movie is perfect including this one. 1. Taron isn't heavy enough. 2. Elton is singing songs that were written along with Bernie before they even meet. EXAMPLE: "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting." 3. For the most part Bernie wrote the lyrics and Elton put them to music and played them.
1. Google “young Elton John”, click images. He wasn’t heavy in the years this movie took place. Taron was pretty much a perfect match. Except Taron in real life has a bit more muscles, especially his thighs! :) 2. This was a musical fantasy based on the songs and life of Elton John, not a biopic where the songs were sung in the order they were written according to year. This is not Bohemian Rhapsody where the band sings the songs on stage or in the studio in the story based on a real timeline. Rocketman is more creative as it actually uses Eltons songs (with Bernie’s words) to tell the story like a real musical does! They matched the words of the songs to story, not time. Musical vs music biopic - two completely different styles of movies. 3. They showed this clearly… Bernie brought his lyrics to Elton and he wrote the songs. They also talked in the movie about how Bernie was sending him lyrics for quite some time before they even met in real life. Not sure why you included this on your list as they made a point of talking about their partnership and how important it was the entire movie? Strange criticisms for “proving” it isn’t perfect? No one ever said this was a documentary. It’s a fantasy and it’s absolutely wonderful!
I love the fact that Taron Egerton (elton) sung all the songs by himself
He is amazing, truly. I love his voice, and his acting is phenomenal!

Across his career, Elton John has had 57 top 40 hits in the United States, second only to Elvis, one of his heroes.
Jamie Bell as Bernie is so so lovely. He and Taron had such great chemistry, I believe in their being song-soulmates!
Impressive movie - it had me mesmerized when he first walked through the door in that demon outfit. Now THAT'S how one makes an entrance!
Great reaction!
Yea at first I was like well that’s over the top but by the first song I was all in. The opening titles were earned very fast.
