I miss Taiwan so much. The fruit there are heavenly and the snacks and boba are to die for. Watching this makes me a little sad because I wish I could visit again soon :(
I have tons of those jellies and I always bring them, anywhere I go. They're awesome! And those cream wafers too! I remember my mom giving me those every day and Pho for lunch when I had a cold
You guys should do a video on asian dessert. Like black sesame soup, egg tart, pineapple bun, to fu flower , tang yuan, mooncake, coconut sago, malai kou, green bean soup , just to name a few.
Gosh people If u really r not from Taiwan or know the history of Taiwan, stop freaking saying that Taiwan is "part of China" or "is" China. Not saying that I hate China or anything, but seriously Taiwan is Taiwan. BTW for those who don't know, Taiwan is not in the UN or called "republic of China" or not an official country in the Olympic it's all because of CHINA. Believe it or not, China has become too threatening that if Taiwan have it's own voice internationally, China might as well start war, so UN "would not allow" that so is forced to leave out Taiwan as "republic of China". I mean before China became powerful, Taiwan was in UN. So shut up people who don't know anything.
Taiwan is part of China...culturally. It was primarily a Qing colony, populated by mostly Han Chinese until the Sino-Japanese war in 1895 when it became a Japanese colony. After WWII, Taiwan technically reverted back to Qing's successor state, the Republic of China. When the Nationalists lost the war, they fled to Taiwan and forcibly ruled the Taiwanese Chinese. Officially Taiwan is called the Republic of China because of the Nationalists. They aren't allowed to change this name due to PRC pressure, but while Taiwan may not be China or part of China, it is primarily a Chinese country. Taiwan was part of the UN previously because it was recognized as China, not Taiwan.
Kevin Metters I don't necessarily agree with you on that Taiwan is culturally part of China, because by saying that, does it also mean that part of America, that once was Spanish colonies and British colonies, count "culturally" part of UK or Spain? I believe not. History is there of course, but we don't live on the past, we live now and on the future. And as a Taiwanese, I believe we are a country that may not be as powerful or rich as China, but also a great country. I just want people to respect this fact.
There are two things wrong with that argument. What indicates influence? People and culture. Time is a factor regarding both. Taiwan is populated by primarily Han Chinese people. Their culture has evolved from Western values and practices adopted by traditional Chinese societies. Furthermore, Taiwan was ruled by Chinese far longer than by any other group than the aborigines which constitute about 2-3 percent of the population now. American territory was owned by Spain and the French but there weren't many actual Spanish or French people living there so there was little actual Franco-Latin influence. America is seen as partial result of British culture. It is at the very least, an original base for our society: Commercial, legalistic, and practical. You can't say that Taiwan isn't culturally Chinese, it simply is. This does not imply Taiwan deserves independence any less. I'm half-Taiwanese myself and I do think its a great country and the mainland could learn much from it. But Taiwan is still a Chinese nation-state.
Kevin Metters Well, you know history quiet well. :D I respect that Taiwan was culturally part of China. But now, I think even foreigners can tell the differences between Taiwan and China, because I believe Taiwan has developed apart from China, and has its own unique culture. And do you mean Taiwan a Chinese nation-state as in it's politically part of China? Because just before that sentence, you said its a great country....?
Here's the thing. Taiwan has arguably preserved traditional Chinese culture better than the PRC. In addition to this, its an island nation which has successfully become democratic in the last 3 decades. But those are the main differences. Taiwanese culture is inherently Chinese. Of course there are differences, just like there is a difference between Guangzhou and Harbin or Hong Kong and Chengdu. A nation is a group of people sharing the same history and practices and traditions. A state is a government that may govern a single or multiple nations. Taiwan is a Chinese nation that has its own state separate from the rest of the Chinese nation. You can argue that the Taiwanese people may one day evolve into a truly different nation but it seems more likely that Taiwan simply illustrates a different evolution of Chinese political society. The main difference, once again, between China and Taiwan are political values and economic developmental levels. Once the mainlanders get accustomed to wealth and if they develop a true civil society, there will be no difference at all.
Oh god yes, I grew up with those and they were so good, I remember my mom taking me to one of the I-Mei factory stores and we'd buy big huge bags of "imperfect" (Broken pieces, imperfect shapes) I-Mei snacks and cookies and bring them home, they'd last for months.
Really cute video! Really like your style. And the Taiwanese lady is really really sweet, she got a really cute Taiwanese accent. I just can`t stop from emphasizing it!
she could be a tv host or something her voice is perfect for it... it's the kind of voice that's not annoying if you make cute voices like what she's doing. she got the looks for it too ... i wonder if she is though.
There's actually a term for that accent loosely translated to Chinese dog language, meaning we don't pronounce it perfectly. Of course their standard of perfect is the Beijing dialect which I personally can't stand. It's like nails on chalkboard, kind of the same as hillbilly american sounds to me in term of annoyance level.
+Asiacheetah Wow, talk about making blatantly offensive comment to other cultures, FYI only people in Beijing speaks the Beijing dialect(kinda obvious, isn't it), the standard mandarin taught in mainland China, i.e. Putonghua, is NOT the Beijing dialect. Incidentally, Putonghua is actually very similar to the standard mandarin taught in Taiwan.
+yamahaU3 I'm Chinese. it is my culture. I personally can't stand the Beijing dialect. that's a personal preference. I never stated otherwise. just like some people can't stand the way Taiwanese people speak mandarin Chinese. sorry I offended you. then again I think you overreacted and I didn't appreciate you telling me not to coment on "other" culture.
+Asiacheetah OK, my choice of word was bad, it should not have been "culture", but people of another region. My point is simply that you can leave it at "I don't like the Beijing dialect." No need to make it nasty by comparing it to nails on chalkboard or American hillbilly(which you do have to admit is not something nice to compare to).
+yamahaU3 so basically you're saying you don't prefer the American hillbilly accent or don't think it's nice to hear? now who's insulting a region. anyway semantics. I stand by what I said. Every thing I said was personal preference. I'm not going to police what I say because someone's sensitive about what other people think about a region's accent.
i am Taiwanese ,all of these taiwanese snacks is good ,and the great thing is part of snacks you see that snack vender is 義美 .it is safe and good honor for food in taiwan,so please everyone have a taste!
My parents are from Taiwan and I only grew up eating a few of those things.. like those rice crackers, bin-bin. And the Asian rice krispies. And wafers. That's about it!
Too bad the word Asian really means oriental in American vocab. That excludes middle easterners unfortunately. But geographically you're Asian, along with Beloved yahood friends
that girl is basically speaking Chinese throughout the video even though this is a video for Taiwanese stuff, but Taiwan is kinda like a part of China right, since they write a mixture of simplified and long-form Chinese. Although I think they have their own government.
taiwan isn't part of china. we just share the same culture. and we have our own government and army. if we are part of china we wouldn't have all that.......
They use a mix of both, I think. Are you from Taiwan? I'm from Singapore, we speak Simplified broken Chinese, hahaha. It's taught to us properly in school, but over the years, we get Singlish mixed up in there.
MegaSmilee1 No we don't normally use simplified chinese, but some of us do use it in some casual writings because it's faster (never in official documents). FYI, Simplified Chinese has been around before the communist gov took over China, but not unified (or official). It was stated official to help the numerous uneducated Chinese to get on track faster and benefit the country.

But you have Chinese signboards everywhere :
