Mom's Dutch Oven Peach Cobbler

  • I wanted to share the peach cobbler recipe that was passed down to be from my Mom. This was also the same recipe her mother used to make as well. It's really easy to make, only I love to cook it in my camp dutch ovens.
Check out my Amazon Affiliates storefront to find ideas and products that I use camping, cooking, and in the shop. www.amazon.com/shop/abom79
Mom's Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Peach Cobbler
    The recipe:
    1 cup self rising flour
    1 cup white granulated sugar
    1 cup milk
1 28oz can peaches with syrup
    Abom's optional additions:
    1 teaspoon vanilla
    1/2 teaspoon cinnamon powder
3-4 pads of butter on top
Mix all of the ingredients except the peaches together. Grease the dutch oven with vegetable shortening. Pour batter into pot.
Dump the can of peaches into the batter, gently swirl them into the batter but don't mix them up a lot. Sprinkle the top with a little bit of cinnamon if desired. Also optional, add a few pads of butter on top.
Bake in the camp dutch oven at 350-375 degrees. For my Lodge 10" oven I use 8 charcoal briquettes on the bottom, and 14 briquettes on top. ( I use briquettes because they're consistent on size, shape, and amount of heat each one puts off)
Once you set the pot over the coals and even them out on the lid, start your timer and cook for right at an hour, maybe a little more or a little less. You just have to keep checking it till it's looking right. Keep in mine the charcoal briquettes will last about an hour then will need to be replaced if you have to cook longer, especially if your oven is not covered and it's windy out. If your charcoal is starting to die out 30-40 minutes into the cook, get a fresh chimney of charcoal burning and ready to replace the ones on the pot so that you can continue cooking at the proper temps.
Once the cobbler is cooked it should look golden on top and bubbling. Remove from heat and dump the charcoals off the lid. Let it cool a few minutes and it's ready to devour! Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to make this one even better! Better yet, make some homemade ice cream!
This is a great summertime dish that goes excellent with BBQ's, family gatherings, neighborhood block parties, or fun filled party's that is sure to please!

Like many other commenters have stated, this brings to mind Boy Scout camping trips. We made many fine batches but we screwed up a few as well. Most fails could be attributed to the impatience of youth. We always had a wood fire (as opposed to charcoal) which made it harder to hold a predetermined temperature. But we always ate what me made and said it was good. Yours, on the other hand, reached the peak of perfection and I know how good it was. Made me hungry! 😎👍

Back in Boy Scouts, the dutch oven peach cobbler was made with canned biscuit dough as a top and bottom crust. Wikipedia says they use scones in the UK. Lots of different regional versions of cobbler. Your mom's looks delicious. Savory cobblers are good, too. It's not just dessert.

Good timing for me, the peach trees here in SoCal are loaded right now. This will be a great way to use them up.
The only other change I may make is to add a little fresh lemon juice. It seems to add flavor intensity to most fruits.

Only way to make it better would be have an ice cream freezer going for the hour the cobbler is cooling. Homemade all the way!
I plan to try this with peaches and apples. I assume you can substitute 29 oz of canned apples with similar results.

Only a dog faced commie soldier wouldn't. "In all the years of, I'm saying that in 2020 we had the most in all of the peach..... just eat the peaches." (going for a President Biden parody there)
