- how did albatross become the best fliers? this is how albatross evolved to become masters of land and sea, and legendary in human culture too. albatross travel huge distances around the world without seeming to ever tire - this is how they do it!
thanks to my fellow bird nerds for making our trip out to the Cook Strait to see these wonderful birds so special! I’d especially like to thank:
Melissa Boardman for inviting me. Melissa is a passionate New Zealand artist and illustrator who makes amazing prints, stationary, patches and more using New Zealand birds as inspiration. You can find her work here - www.melissaboa...
Leon Berard for organising the trip with Cook Strait Fishing Charters. Leon is an insanely talented photographer and conservationist who takes incredible shots of our birds. His work is here - leonberardphot...

Interesting content, and so well put together. 👍🙂👍 Amazing birds without a doubt. 😎
Thank you!!! 😊😊😊
Albatross are some of the most amazing birds to ever evolve in my opinion, and I think you’ve made a great case for why they’re so legendary. I am always blown away by their ability to survive in such a crazy habitat, not many other species can. Great stuff Sum!

Masters of the high seas! I’m glad you guys enjoyed it 😊😊 ever seen them in real life?!
@@outdoorswithsum We haven’t yet, but we have seen some storm petrels before, they were cool
Another great vid filled with 'summerisms' 😋 Mmm rotting seafood, delicious.
I admit this one was quite heavy on the summerisms heheh! thanks again for your part in making this Melissa! 🌻😌
LOVE THIS
ALBIES 💜💜💜
Truly a legendary bird! I learned new things about albatross from you. And the presentation of being "on the boat" was fun. Dynamic soaring is even more interesting than gliding - they harvest energy from wind speed differences by alternating between layers of air. I haven't found a good way to explain it yet but it's on my radar for future topics.
WOO my job is done! It is very tricky to explain, maybe that’s why humans still haven’t found a way to do it yet either!
Excited to see how you explain it if you do it for a video 😊
I hope I can see one someday!
Also this is quickly becoming one of my fave channels, greetings from Canada!
I hope so too! AWW thank you welcome to the channel!! 🧡🌼
Such good wanderers the legendary very lost black-browed mollymawk just got spotted in England again this month, hanging out at a gannet colony
wow all the way over there! did you spot the black-broweds in this video? there were quite a few on our boat trip!
@@outdoorswithsum So many of them! Looked like a great day out, which species were out there? In the video I'm seeing black browed, white capped, wandering, northern royal, maybe salvin's?
I fed one a whole kahawhai once haha
OMG I HAD TOTALLY FORGOTTEN ABOUT LOLLY SCRAMBLES WTH
HAHAH only legends will remember
❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉
Very cool! Even though my position is that albatrosses are just glorified seagulls you make a good case for them here 😂
thanks for the vid!
Hahahah I’m telling the albatross you said that!! it’s all in the soaring my friend - leave the flapping for the low tier gulls
0:04 A Kiwi should know the best birds are indeed the flightless! Penguins, takahē, kа̄kа̄pо̄, kiwi- MOA!!
HOT TAKE
but... moa is a good call
BEST BIRDS. FACT.
FACT
:-) I think you should teach in a kindergarten - Its always nice to have a video of yours coming up.
what a lovely thought!! I do teach kids at the ecosanctuary I work at, it’s tiring but very enjoyable 😊 thank you so much for watching
@@outdoorswithsum you are welcome :-)
Do you know how they sleep while out a sea.
They just land on the water and sleep right there!
Technically, they’re one of the worst fliers. It depends on how you define flying. Albatrosses cannot do powered flight! They cannot fly without wind, at all. They basically are just really advanced gliders
