I love this hooded towel. I’ve made many of these but nnever thought of putting gathers in the back of the neck of the hood. Also, I always made a simple seam but as you know it’s thick and bulky, love this way of doing the seam, and zig zagging on bth sides. Thanks so much. Very cute. Will be making one right now, however it’s for a 6 year old so I may make the hood bigger, as her head is long and bigger than a baby’s. Thank you!
This is by far the best tutorial on the hooded towel I've found. It's definitely the method I'm going to use. Your instructions were precise and easy to follow. You kept my attention all the way through. I'm an experienced seamstress. Thank you.
Great clear instructions Jan. Love this cute hooded towel with the applique. I just bought a new serger and will make one for my sister in law who is expecting her first baby.
Beautiful bath towels ❤ and thank you for the pattern for the stars , I mad a bath towel for my niece baby yesterday . and I just came across your video today and I added the stars on it just now . Thank you again
I appreciate your sharing how to make a Hooded Bath towel for kids! Over the past years, I’ve saved old beach towels and adult towels. They are in great condition, so why not put them to use! In June, we’re visiting my family in Idaho who have three children. My plan is to use the towels inside of decorative blizzard fleece that I bought. Am hoping this combination of fabrics will go together well! Thx again!
Ive been looking for a video to help me make a hooded towel for my daughter who is 6months. The towels they sell for babies are so thin that im constantly bundling her up with 2. I appreciate you and this video! Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sending me the instructions and to make the pillowcases. if I'm making a hooded towel but my machine doesn't have embroidery, can I buy decals and sew them with a pretty stitch.
Did you cut yourself Jan? I noticed you leave your rotary cutter open all the time. Ihave such a bad habit of leaving it open like you do. Then one day I did cut myself by brushing my hand next to it. I still leave it open but I’ve pretty much quit doing that. What a great tutorial. You finish everything so well. I made a lot of them as well, but it’s nice to see the little extras that you do, like the gathering at the back of the neck; and also sewing off both sides of the hoodie. Very nicely done. Thank you!
LOL yes I did cut myself and have since got a different cutter that has a safety on it so when I release it, it covers the blade. But those blades are so sharp, like you said, just brushing your skin lightly against it will cut it. That's what happened.
You could not have posted this video at a better time! I have been wracking my brain trying to figure out what to make for a new big sister. She is two, and feeling a bit put out by the new arrival. One question. When you did the top stitch on the back of the hood, was that a straight stitch or a zig zag? I know the inside attachment is zig zag. Thanks so much!
They are one-size-fits-all. I use these towels with infants up to 10 year old kids. Although the headpiece is a little large for infants, they work really well when bathing a baby. You can lay them on top and wrap the towel around them.
Great question. If I use a piece of fabric for bias tape, I usually make quite a bit since it's cut on an angle and not of much use for anything else except small scrap projects.
I really like how you did the back of the hood, gathering stich. It really looks nice.😊
Thank you!
The masking tape trick....girl, where has this been all my sewing years been??? 💜💜💜
glad that tip was helpful. I use masking tape all the time!
Yes! So simple, but amazing for sewing those straight lines.

I used zigzag stitch on the back as well. What a fun BIG sister gift.

I have a teen who's really tall, about 5ft 6in, how could I make her one? TFS 🥰🐞😘
You could use a sheet towel. Or just buy terry cloth by the yard and make it as big as you want
TY Jan for responding so promptly!! 🥰🐞🤗
What age is this size good for.
They are one-size-fits-all. I use these towels with infants up to 10 year old kids. Although the headpiece is a little large for infants, they work really well when bathing a baby. You can lay them on top and wrap the towel around them.
Do you waste yardage by making your own bias tape?
Great question. If I use a piece of fabric for bias tape, I usually make quite a bit since it's cut on an angle and not of much use for anything else except small scrap projects.
How big for the hood for bigger kids?
This will fit bigger kids. Kinda large for the new little ones. You could use a smaller towel and make the hood smaller.
