How to change spark plugs on a Honda odyssey

  • You only need a few tools to change the spark plugs or coil‘s on a Honda Odyssey. You will need a flat head screwdriver, 10 mm socket, 5/8 spark plug socket, 3/8 ratchet, and 2, 3 inch extensions. The engine is symmetrical, so the procedure is the exact same on both sides. The hardest part is finding the right angle to pull the coils in and out. You’ll have to do some maneuvering around the hoses at the back of the engine.

    I appreciate you listing the required tools at the beginning, as well as showing the process. This allowed me to repair the #2 cylinder (firewall-facing, center) misfire condition, that showed up suddenly on our road-trip, in the shade in front of an AutoZone (thanks to them diagnosing the issue as well as allowing me to borrow their tools) and complete the 750-mile journey home! Since this happened on New Year’s Day 2022 with everything closed, being able to fix it myself using your instructions saved me a ton of money. 👍

    Tip for the back, when removing the clip press the connector down and into the coil connection and you will hear the click and the connector comes loose a lot easier.

    Always put a small dab of 'never-seaze' on the spark plug threads, more important on alumimun head engines, if you have compress air avalable, blow out around the base or the spark plug before removing it.

    • @nw1302
      @nw1302 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      From the NGK (OEM spark plug manufacturer) website: "NGK spark plugs feature trivalent plating. This silver or chrome-colored finish on the threads is designed to provide corrosion resistance against moisture and chemicals. The coating also acts as a release agent during spark plug removal. NGK spark plugs are installed at the factory dry, without lubrication or anti-seize.
      Anti-seize can act as a lubricant, altering torque values up to 20 percent, increasing the risk of spark plug thread breakage and/or metal shell stretch. Thread breakage can sometimes involve removing the cylinder head for repair. Metal shell stretch changes the heat rating of the spark plug and can result in serious engine damage caused by pre-ignition. Do not use anti-seize or lubricant on NGK spark plugs. It is completely unnecessary and can be detrimental."
