  • Painting and weathering World War 2 US soldier figures. These figures were 3D printed using my Creality Mage Pro and my Creality UW-02 Wash and Cure machine (bit.ly/46qDsyj). The figures can be seen eating a meal and resting in the back of the Italeri DUKW that I built a few months ago.
    The STL files for these figures were created by Artejaol:

    David R Lentz, Columbus, Ohio, USA (Saturday, 13 July, 2024; happy birthday, Mother!)
    By the end of your video, your figures painting pulled together well. Excellent work on the Italeri GMC DUKW Amphibious Transport, too.
    I some years past had built and detailed one of this kit, incorporating into it Verlinden’s three sets: GMC CCKW-353 Truck cargo, CCKW-353 Truck Engine, and DUKW crew figures. I also had Italeri’s tracked amphibious assault vehicles (I cannot recall their military designations), and a Ford GPA ¼-ton, 4 × 4 amphibious light utility truck, placing them all into a USMC beachfront invasion display.
    I had found another tracked amphibious assault vehicle from another kit maker, though it was rather crude in comparison to the Italeri kits; I planned to use another of a suitable Italeri kit to serve as a basis, using the parts of the former vehicle that differed-much of the upper surface-retaining the tracks, the lower hull, and all the two had in common. I also had been accumulating as many Marines figurines as I could find to avoid redundancy (this was before 3D printing; now, I would create replicas with minor changes in faces, physiques, hands, boot sizes, etc., and others in slightly different scales: some in 1:37th-scale, one in 1:32nd-scale. I planned to have a platoon or a company of U.S. Army infantry along their far right, most in 1:34th-scale or 1:33rd-scale.
    I had not been able to finish them, though (that is a long story! :( SMH) :( !)
    I still am more of a nerd than you: no one would mistake me for a “model”.

    Just a thought for the ration boxes..how about dipping or spraying with panel liner? It's paper so something translucent should work.
    The whole diorama looks fantastic some decade I'll be able to paint figures like you. 😊

    That looks really good. The figures look very natural and not posed. You can imagine the chatter as they have their lunch. Adding figures, stowage and maybe making a simple diorama can double the build time of a model so you get a lot more value for money out of the kits. Also a simple diorama can add so much context.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Yes, the figure are very well sculpted and in refreshingly different poses. I feel it spoils a model a bit when you see a great finish but then recognise the same old figures from a standard kit. One day I'd like to learn how to customize figures.

    Incredible detail figures, 3D printing makes a tremendous difference The painting techniques were very helpful as figures are becoming more prevalent in kit dynamics these days. Valeyo paints are some of the only paint along with Tamiya I have access to. Good paints but difficult use, I'm going to give your technique a go. Thanks Bob

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Bob. I really like Vallejo for small details - but find them more difficult for any large areas. Very easy to mix and thin with water, and the bottles last a long time too.

    Yes, your figure painting is improving rapidly. Another modeler who has struggled with that is Night Shift. He made some terrible efforts to begin with, trying to paint figures the way he does armor, and eventually looked at videos by other modelers to learn tricks and techniques. Fortunately for all of us he shared what he learned. I recommend checking his figure playlist for ideas.
    As for those ration boxes- from what I understand they were typically taken very good care of so they should look pretty clean. For shadowing a wash isn’t a bad idea, but maybe a matte varnish coat first would make it easier to control.
    I’m looking forward to the aircraft and tank conversion builds in particular. I have been a fan of great big bombers since childhood, and as an adult I appreciate the challenges of “camouflaging” a vehicle to look like something else.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you. Yes, I borrowed some of these techniques from Night Shift. He really is an excellent modeller.

      Love your videos! For figure painting, I would say you need to blue tack them to a wine/candle cork, or get a citidal/army painter holder. The cheaper version is pretty good if you don't want to keep handling your figures.

    Good work, however Latex gloves, even painted, will start to degrade over time & become brittle. Particularly exposed to natural light & temp fluctuations. Nitrile is a little better, however the sure fire way to know, is many have expiry dates on their boxes.

    I believe it needs a lot more weathering and chipping on the vehicle. The figures are just too clean and helmets again need chipping.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair - the helmets could be dirtier. This video was mainly about the figures though, I didn't want to do anything else to the DUKW at this stage.
