We’ve got a Big Boy at the Transportation Museum in St. Louis Missouri and you can see the inside of the firebox much better since it’s outside and there’s natural sunlight

I wanted to come here and respond to myself, you actually can’t see it any better. Idk what I was talking about. It being outside in natural sunlight doesn’t mean anything 😂

I got to see 4014 when it was still on display at the Fairplex in Pomona. You're 100% right about the size. The 4-8-8-4's were MASSIVE!!! The first time you see one, it will take your breath away!!!

Excellent video, I wished they had more of the Milwaukee Road electrics they were incredible, and too bad all of the Hiawatha engines were scrapped. I've been to the California RR museum where they have a fully restored cab forward and it's massive also. Once again great video.

I grew up in Green Bay and pretty much took this museum for granted. Seeing the perspective of new people visiting really reminds me just how impressive the museum actually is.

I saw 60008 Dwight D. Eisenhower in 2013 when it was on display at the National Railway Museum in York, England, alongside the other five surviving A4's. It was a celebration of the 75th anniversary of A4 4468 [later 60022] Mallard achieving the world speed record for a steam locomotive.

I visited many times growing up in Green Bay during the 2000s, and I’m glad just about everything I remember being open is still open. Part of me worries that an incident or liability issues could close off the interiors of certain locomotives, but it looks like it hasn’t happened.

29:17 Fun Fact about this locomotive, it is 1 of 16 C-430's made by Alco and it's the only one the GBW had.

    Fun story about this place!
My gal and her kids came along with me. I was too busy geeking out that I got separated from them. I text one of them where she was, and she was outside in the open-shed area. I find her in the outside area and I show her more stuff I'm foaming at. We're about to go through the passenger cars when another guest asks to "join our group", so OK. We all go through the cars, I'm describing things that I've only seen in books, and when we get done I say to my girlfriend we should see something else and the guy goes "Wait, you're not a tour-guide?"
He ran my ear off, my girls made fun of me, and I should've been paid for that tour.
I felt proud with the foam hanging from my mouth to the ground that day. 5 stars

One thing that struck me was the compact nature of the Eisenhoeer compared to a similar American design. People on an island tend to design things that way.
I spent over an hour measuring and photographing the MILW caboose. Could have spent all day.
Finished the day with a trip to Usingers and then a drive to a campground in Oshkosh. There, I cooked up brats and onions in a skillet full of Miller beer. Pretty damn Wisconsin.

I can't remember how many times I've been to the Railroad Museum growing up. It is a really great place, and a lot of fun to explore everything in the out door shed. Walking through those old passenger cars is a neat experience, and one thing I always recall is the smell of the old interior. The Milwaukee Road Switcher is a Fairbanks Morse, #736. I remember riding in the cab a few times, my uncle and grandpa were volunteer engineers there for many years. The GBW #106 switcher is an ALCO, not sure of the specific type- but it used to be the Chicago Northwestern #1083. I remember many cab rides in that when they did the "Terror on the Fox" haunted house, riding around the loop at night delivering passengers to the haunted house.
Very nice video, thorough and very informative!

    • @vidcas1711
      @vidcas1711 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I also grew up nearby and visited many times, and agree that the smell in the outdoor passenger cars is very distinctive and burned in my memories.
Seeing this video also reminded me the sheer amount of cars and cabins you were able to enter. I want to visit some time again and see what new cars they’ve restored and opened up.

fun fact GG1 #4890 was never actually painted in the Tuscan five-stripe paint scheme in her service career in the prr
She wore the Brunswick single stripe paint scheme during her service life
Im guessing they probably put her in Tuscan because its such a famous color scheme but I wish they'd kept her in her original PRR scheme

One year when I was a kid (this was over 20 years ago, quite a long time ago) my parents and I took a short vacation with my two sisters and we choose to ride the Mount Hood Railroad train. I made an unforgettable friend when we took that trip, it's a shame I don't see her anymore...

Sad really when you realise that in Britain they have around 800 operational steam locos, many running on their National network for hundreds of miles, pulling tourist trains at 75mph every weekend. And they have one huge National Railway Museum with HUNDREDS of steam, diesel & electric types, its absolutely stunning !!!

The place has improved quite a lot since I first visited it in 1975. Engines are indoors in a comfortable, climate-controlled display room, rather than left outdoors to the harsh Wisconsin elements. It and alternative reason to visit Green Bay if you're no Packers fan. However the museum's name is still very unwarranted and pretentious.
