When you are very young, as I was when the 5th Dimension was making their hits and living on our radios, you develop a kind of worship for the entertainers (some call it fandom) and it is very heartfelt for someone at the age of 10 to experience. Of course we all know of times where we ended up being disappointed in our heroes, bit not with Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., they have always been two people worthy of the admiration and love they not only received but have created over the years. I'm so glad to see them here being happy and honored for a lifetime of love and music.
I had just left school December 1969. Wedding Bell Blues was a hit. From that month I have fell hopelessly in love with Marilyn. I'm 72 now and still love her. The memories are intoxicating.
My parents had a 5th Dimension 8-Track and it would play in my Dad's pickup. Just love them. And watched Marilyn on Solid Gold. I would love them to tell the story behind You Don't Have to Be a Star; my late Mom loved that song and had the 45. Laura Nyro didn't get the credit she truly deserved; her songs brought so much joy to many of us. Marilyn and Billy are still together and still singing, one of rock and pop's greatest couples.
In the early 70's, as a 10 year old white kid growing up in the 'burbs, I adored their music. I played the Fifth Dimension LP "Greatest Hits on Earth" constantly. That was FIFTY years ago! I knew every second of every song. In High School, had it on 8 track; in College, cassette. Then CD. Thank you Marilyn, Billy, Florence, LaMonte and Ron for the soundtrack of my life. Thanks Adam. Dinner's cooking, wanna guess what I'm listening to?
When Marilyn complimented you, it seriously gave me goosebumps. I remember the many days of my childhood, listening to them on the radio. To hear how honestly humbled she was about how you knew things about them, that they had forgotten about, really made the artist become human to me. Awesome stuff as always.
Love the 5th Dimension and Marilyn & Billy! They were part of the amazingly great music of my childhood and still love their music today! Really sweet interview!
I love Billy Davis Jr. & Marilyn McCoo & the 5th Dimension. Thank You for giving profs to Laura Nyro who died way too early. Nyro's "The First Songs" album was tremendous. She had such a beautifully clear bell-sounding voice & her writing skills were wonderful.
Another great interview that went more like a friendly conversation. They are great people with a great relationship. 50 years of marriage and they are still happy! No wonder they made such good music. You have a knack at bringing out the best of their personalities and presenting it to us. Thank you, Adam!
I've always loved the Fifth Dimension's vocal harmonies, but the harmony of Billy and Marilyn's souls are even more beautiful. You could post a daily interview with them and I wouldn't complain. Marilyn, you look amazing!
I grew up in the 60s and 70s listening to the music of the 5th Dimension and Marilyn McCoo. They were a fantastic group and she is a fantastic singer (and so is Billy)!! I adore the 5th Dimension and I try to catch every interview that I can with these two. They’re amazing. A true American treasure. Thank you for bringing this one to us.
@@ProfessorofRockMarilyn McCoo was a great host and singer on "Solid Gold". She had classic duets with so many greats and went outside her musical genre on several occasions during the series. Although Dionne Warwick co-hosted the series pilot with Glen Campbell and was the first season host in 1980 through 1981, approved "Solid Gold" Musical Director Michael Miller as its musical director and gave approval for his composition of its iconic theme song and hosted season 6 during 1985 and 1986 and was great in her own right, it was Marilyn McCoo who had the longest time as co-host or host on "Solid Gold", having done that for 5 out of its 8 years on the air. She worked well with The Solid Gold Dancers as well.
My first memory of Marilyn McCoo was watching her on “It Takes A Thief” with Robert Wagner in 1970. I was only 11 years old but knew that she was beyond special. One of my favorite songs of the 5th Dimension is “Paper Cup”. Only a super group like the 5th Dimension could sing about a paper cup and make it a hit!
My sister and I always talk about coming home from school, and our mom would The 5th Dimension, Simon & Garfunkel, The Bee Gees, etc., albums stacked on our “state of the art” cabinet stereo. It was the late 60s and early 70s. Who knew that our middle-aged, suburban mom was the coolest mom around? And Marilyn McCoo’s voice is absolute perfection.
Great segment, Adam! Laura Nyro was one of the most prolific songwriters of her era and a great performer in her own right. Billy and Marilyn are an adorable couple and both are incredibly talented vocalists! The 5th Dimension had so many great hits in the late 60s that still bring back fond memories.

I met Billy and Marilyn when I was a kid in St. Louis. My family had gone to The Chase Park Plaza for Brunch after Church and they were seated near us. Billy actually knew my dad since my dad used to work for KATZ Radio as a news director, so my older brother and I got introduced to them. I remember shaking Billy's hand and Ms. McCoo kissing my cheek and telling me I was a good boy. Then she gave both of my parents a hug and kiss on the cheek as well and they left. In 1967 "Up, Up & Away" became my all time favorite song and now 57 years later it is still my all time favorite song. It was such a thrill to actually meet The 5th Dimension when I was seventeen. The 5th in New York City's now defunct EJ Korvette department store. After I introduced myself to the members of the group they were all so busy signing autographs and doing what they could to promote their new album that for some reason they didn't have. They had top notch writers, Jimmy Webb, Laura Nyro, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. With 20 Top 40 hits, including two number ones the 5th Dimension must be ranked among the best of all time.
Remember watching Marilyn McCoo on tv hit series Solid Gold, she has such beautiful voice that blends with anyone, duets on solid gold she sang live was with Cliff Richards "Suddenly" and several with her host Andy Gibbs Endless Love" Dianna Ross and Lionel Ritchie song, and her and Andy sang Andy Gibbs hit song " I just wanna be your everything" other artist that just go together is Crystal Gayle and Eddie Rabbit song " just you and I" Mike Reno and Ann Wilson duet " almost paradise" Stevie Nicks with Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks with Don Henley, and so many more
I didn’t realize how many 5th Dimension songs I loved and sang along to already! Marilyn & Billy are so comfortable with you and so sweet together. Look at super young David Geffin! Stone Soul Picnic is just good all the way around. Wedding Bell Blues was sung at many a slumber party by us girls. We all wanted our own ‘Bill’ who would love us. @Anna Trail thank you so very much! We don’t consider it work really. We just make sure to talk, laugh, and really love each other every day. Our kids have really high standards for who they’re going to marry. They’ve all said that they want what we’ve got and won’t settle for less.
@Anna Trail our wedding in 1996 was less than $2K total. In my grandparents yard, with family and friends and so much love ❤️! The day was a little tense because my mom hated my husband, so we made the decision to have a nonalcoholic reception.
I’ve always loved Marilyn and Billy! My mom loved them back in the day. And now with Gilmore girls, my daughter knows at least one of their songs! Wedding Bell Blues. Such a great song and Marilyn has such a great, bright smooth voice!
I'm so glad you released this video today, I sure needed the smile that only Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. can bring. They are so joyous and talk with such enthusiasm and love for each other, not to mention their craft. There will never be another 5th Dimension- and Billy, I want you to know that your music may have been classified as pop, but it was chock full o' soul!
I have the habit of judging music by the level in which it moves me in so many ways. The Fifth Dimension is one group whose music moved me, in so many positive ways. Thank you so very much.
Loved seeing them on tv back then. Love their version of " Go Where You Wanna Go". Also their followup to " You Don't Have to be a Star" called " Your Love".
My father loved the 5th Dimension so I grew up in the 70's listening to them and we watched their TV show. In high school I was in a modern dance group and I danced to their Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In. We did it with black lights and I still remember most of that dance 49 years later!
I remember this song well from the T.V.Show Designing Women because it was Charlene (Jean Smart) and "Bill's"(Douglass Barr) unofficial/official song and was even performed at their bridal shower.
Here I am a 10 yr old white country boy watching the 5th dimension tv special and just blown away by their talent. And of course one of my dads fishing buddies was named Bill. Of course you can imagine my sisters singing that song when we all went camping and fishing together...Thank you Professor for the trip down memory lane
I love seeing the joy Marilyn and Billy have when Adam interviews them...I was clapping when Marilyn thanked our Professor for the work he does. Cheers!
They are such a wonderful couple, something all couples should aspire to. They seem to radiate peace, love, joy and tranquility in both their music and life.
It's so wonderful to see them still together after all these years. Marilyn is still as beautiful as ever. I listened to the 5th Dimension on a small transistor radio back in the early 70's. Loved their music then, still love listening to their music now. Keep up the good work Professor of Rock.
If you want something that will last then don't seek temporary pleasure. And if all you want is that temporary gratification, you won't ever get something that will last. It's like learning to play an instrument. It takes a lot more than a single note. It takes patience and dedication and a pure love and enjoyment of the music. If all you want is fame and fortune or temporary pleasure then forget ever having something that will last.

Indeed, I remember Marilyn from "Solid Gold".
What a great couple, I've always thought Marilyn was one of the great beauties and best voices in the music business.
Their joy is palapable! Simply delightful
I found mine and we’re 25 years and counting so far! Thanks Professor for another great video! I love it as usual. ~Mimi 💖
Congrats on 25 years! Thanks for watching!
@Anna Trail I second that!
Congrats on 25 years, Mz. A!
Such a beautiful couple, always loved them for their wonderful relationship and music!!
Darling people! Her voice is right up there amongst the best pop singers of all time.
I’ve always loved Marilyn and Billy! My mom loved them back in the day. And now with Gilmore girls, my daughter knows at least one of their songs! Wedding Bell Blues. Such a great song and Marilyn has such a great, bright smooth voice!
For sure!
For sure!. Such a light, those two...
Yeah, I had such a bad day today but Marilyn and Billy really brightened me up with their bubbly personalities!
Saw this duo 2 or 3 years ago in concert. It was beautiful.
I have the habit of judging music by the level in which it moves me in so many ways. The Fifth Dimension is one group
whose music moved me, in so many positive ways.
What wonderful down to earth people. I love their music, and now I love them! Inspiring interview!
This video brought me to so much tears because of the memories of some much work Davis and McCoo did in music.
What an amazing couple… And the music they produced over the years it’s truly a gift❤️
I love seeing the joy Marilyn and Billy have when Adam interviews them...I was clapping when Marilyn thanked our Professor for the work he does. Cheers!
Very down to earth couple. Didn't let fame go to their head. Again good interviewer and interviewees
Adam, Professor of Rock, I'd LOVE to see/hear an episode about KENNY RANKIN 😍 That would be SO TERRIFIC! THANKS!
It's no wonder why they are the Prof's favorite married couple.
What a great interview! What lovely people!
Lovely music, lovely couple, lovely people!
Such a beautiful, warm couple!
I recently watched the Summer of Soul documentary and the 5th Dimension’s performance was by far my favorite. Good wholesome music.
Awesome episode. Keep doing what your doing. Being sincere and kind and appreciative of the artist you interview. You can see they respond to your enthusiasm. Excellent job👍🏼
I've always loved the 5th Dimension! Their music takes me back to the happier days of my childhood! Great memories! Thanks for keeping the music alive Professor! Awesome interview with Marilyn and Billy!
Another EXCELLENT interview with these two fantastic people. Their appearances and energy makes them seem DECADES younger than they really are!
I really want to meet them! I know someone who works for them and I have been trying to get him to schedule an event where I can actually spend time with them.
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Good luck! I really hope that it happens for you. I would LOVE to meet them as well. They REALLY had excellent uplifting energy and wisdom, and I hope that you can make that come true and get your chance to chat with them. Please keep us posted.
@@JohnSmith-or8rh Yep, I will.
Marilyn and Billy are simply wonderful. So talented and yet down to earth and warm to their fans. Going to see them in Stuart, Fl in a few days and I cannot wait!
Professor, What a great interview with a terrific couple who made my childhood brighter with their music. We've all gotten into the 'friends zone' with someone, and sometimes you don't get out of it :( . Brought back memories of making radio station promotions on reel to reel tape, using that splicing block as well.
Awesome! Great memories. Thanks for sharing my friend.
I love them so much! The 5th Dimension is one of my favorite groups from the 60s and 70s era.
@@ProfessorofRock have you heard Morrissey’s cover? (Of course you have lol)
What a wonderful interview. And you're such a warm, genuine interviewer and host. Thank you.
