      It's dumb as fuck. The thing is you can actually use an abrasive like a fibre glass pen to clean an already corroded contact but on the whole 2 times I've ever done that the contact was already suffering corrosion damage and i used a thin coating of solder afterwards to try and protect against future corrosion.... I honestly don't get how anyone thinks sanding a contact that just needs a bit of a clean is any kind of good idea.

      Two things were abundantly clear from comments made by the company doing that Kickstarter.
      1) They had basic to hardly any even rudimentary knowledge about retro gaming consoles.
      2) They spoke in the unmistakable broken bad english of people I have to guess in China or China adjacent that are trying to run something far above their abilities.
      This whole thing smells to high heaven of shenanigans of some kind. it's not exactly a scam it's just not good either and it's ruining perfectly good consoles.

    Thankfully, I got a $5 antique Sunbeam Radiant Control toaster from the flea market. :) "Automatic beyond belief!" despite its age. The toast even lowers itself and you get the consistent results even if the bread is frozen or toaster is already warm. That's because it doesn't care about time and temperature. Instead, it uses how brown the bread gets to gauge how "done" it is (darker spots reflect heat differently).

    The controller design they used seems to be a recreation of the Hori n64 pads from the early 2000’s, released only in Japan. While they may not appeal to everyone as they are quite small, those original Hori controllers regularly sell for high prices on eBay and elsewhere, so it is nice to have a cheaper and new production alternative for those that want them.

    • @coopercummings8370
      @coopercummings8370 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Retro bit already makes a hori N64 clone called the tribute 64. I don't know if the warrior 64 is just buying those, buying stuff made by the same factory, or just making their own (almost certainly worse based on the rest of the kit) implementation of a hori knock off. Also, the original hori n64 controllers aren't that expensive, they are going for like 1/3 the price of the gamecube hori pads people like to use with the gameboy player accessory.

    • @RudeKeyser
      @RudeKeyser 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@coopercummings8370 Maybe $80+ for a used controller isn’t *that* expensive for you, but having an alternative that is new stock for $25 seems reasonable - I have no experience with either this Intec version, nor the Retrobit offering however, so I cannot attest to the quality of either.

    I think black screws to secure the HDMI port would match the aesthetic a little better than silver screws. Good work though!

    Question for you:
    at about 10:25, you mention that anyone involved in retro gaming knows how bad splitting RGB is. Is there a video either by you or otherwise on YT that steps through this? (Or, more likely, link to a post where someone explains it)
    I'm not a signals guy, but it sounds like a good review for best-practices when dealing with analog video

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a really good question. There's tons of info out there, but I don't think there's one dedicated to "why you can't split video signals". I'll talk to Ste and maybe we can make that one.

    LOL!! THE STOVETOP SOLDERING!!!!
    I've actually soldered a guitar output jack with a lighter at a gig once, between sets, because my guitarist had a break.
    It was all we had to work with

      That's such a fucking cool story!!! I've pulled some MacGyver shit at gigs before, but I think you win! :)

      @@RetroRGB It was a quick fix, I had to keep telling him to stop jumping around so I could get the thing home and put in a new jack.
      Of course, getting drunk musicians to listen during a show is never an easy chore haha!
      The best one was when my '74 Ampeg V2 head shorted out at the power plug (Someone's guitar was leaned against a wall near it and fell on it) backfeeding into a generator and shutting down the show for 20 minutes...
      In the mean time, I pulled the plug apart, stripped the wires with my car keys, and put it back together... it was ugly.. but it worked.
      The work of a bass player is never over, we're the time keeper, field-tech, and often sound guy of the band haha

    Question for a noob; WHY is it bad to split analogue signal like that? Just too much for a the chip?

    • @RetroRGB
      @RetroRGB  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Correct. So, using a Y cable to split audio just makes each of the outputs quieter, but is safe. Splitting the VIDEO output with a Y cable (which is essentially how this RGB signal is wired) draws twice the signal and will burn the chip out. I'll do a video on it soon.

  • @nking729

    So, if i get the unassembled kit, toss out their internal parts, is it essentially just old N64 guts and the case?
