I'm lucky in that I live in a relatively low-crime small city in California. Yes, the taxes are high, however, here in my city, the cost of living isn't insane like it is in the larger cities, which I suspect, is where most of the anti-California sentiment is fomenting. The homeless problem is present here, but not epidemic, the rents are high, but not insane, the weather, without a doubt, is great here. I can travel to the mountains, to the coast within hours and have done so since my youth. I've been to other states that have lower cost of living, but also hurricanes, tornados, soft ball-sized hail, oppressive heat and humidity, and teeth-chattering freezing cold that'll shrink your nuts to the size of chickpeas.
I love California, it's just a lot of people can't afford to live there but still choose to and feel entitled that they should be able to even if they put themselves in financial hardship. My property in CA is a lot smaller than my house in TN for the same price. If the right opportunity presents itself, I wouldn't mind moving back to Orange County.
Just know that if you come to the valley, like so many are, this is NOT S.F. Be cool and kind and we're nice people, but just because we're close geographically speaking doesn't mean we're the same. This isn't Mill Valley or Sausalito, Daly City or San Mateo. Basically, you're welcome, but leave the Bay Area bad attitudes behind.
I must be a contrarian. We moved from the East Coast to retire in SoCal and really like it in our over 55 community (Laguna Woods). Nice weather and people, but yes in LA and SF there are some issues but I am sure they will sort themselves out at some point. Maybe it is good that in an over crowded State people are vacating which will bring real estate prices down and open up more housing. However, the beaches are great, there are big mountains, interesting deserts etc. and you can go from warm to cold in the winter just within a few hours drive. Well, adios amigos : ) The grass always seems to be greener but you may find out that you will miss a lot that CA has to offer when you move to TX etc. I was in the military there and it never grew on me.
@Michael S -- that's what I foresee happening -- people who have left for TX will look back and realize that they don't have access to the same lifestyle, culture, weather, and everything else that CA has to offer.
The grass is alot greener for the people leaving.. Its only a good place to live if you can afford to live there.. The more it takes to live there, the more people cannot afford it and move to get an improved lifestyle.. As some other poster said, eventual Californians will either be very well off or dirt poor with no one in between.
That's ridiculous $5000 to rent a U-Haul, If you don't want to ditch all your possessions I would just buy a smaller box truck or even a running 10-15 year old retired school bus on gov deals for $3000-4000 and sell it at the other end when the move is done. Not a option for everyone especially if one is not mechanically inclined but I could never bring myself to pay $5000 to rent a U-Haul. Another option would be if you own a full-size pickup just buy a good used 15-30 foot enclosed trailer and then sell the trailer most likely for close to what was paid for it when the move is done.
My sister moved back to the midwest from vegas.. After you calculated the cost of moving.. It would have costed her more to move thanto just leave her stuff there and buy new.. SO she got New Furniture and made the move a breeze.

When Blue states have to pay their own way, they will be in an even bigger financial hole than they are now. There are many other federal tax breaks for blue state tech and energy sectors that have ripped off the rest of us. This doesn't even count the huge Amtrak subsidies. Red states have very few Amtrak lines. It's a frigging gift, to the coastal communities.
@@timothywilliams1359 Kentucky (Mitch McConnell's state) receives $2.35 in federal aid for every dollar paid in.There are 39 other overwhelmingly red states, who also receive more in benefits than paid in taxes. That leaves 12 blue states to shoulder the burden. Complain and whine all you wish about coastal elites, but you can't argue with fact. California, even in all its imperfections, is a major job creating state in everything from agriculture to technology and entertainment. And pays lots of taxes to support red states.
The biggest problem is not politics, it is the people leaving sell their home for $$$ and move where it is less expensive to retire. It tends to drive up the price of real estate, it happens in Calif where people from the bay area move to the valley and drive up real estate prices.
