I work in a wind turbine blade factory. I play the Mechanicus soundtrack on the bluetooth speakers at volumes that echo across the entire site from time to time. There's one particular job that requires using a pneumatic grinder to "activate" the blade's surface before a toxic putty coating can be applied to it. Past a certain radius on the Blade's surface, the lightening protection system's internal metal mesh is less than a centre metre under the external gel coating of the surface. If the mesh is perforated *at all*, the turbine will EXPLODE if struck during a storm. Any damage to the system mid production causes a several day long repair job. Imagine trying to remove a layer of tinfoil from an egg, with a heavy power tool that can tear through soft metals in seconds, without breaking the shell. That's the job. Due to the horrifying work conditions, there's an extremely high turn over, the factory now has maybe a handful of people capable of performing this properly. Production operatives will literally cower in fear at the prospect of performing this job, knowing that drug tests or disciplinary hearings will meet them if they fuck it up. So many of the new hires act like hot shit, they will throw their weight around, tune the radio however they want most of the time, claim that they have the right- because they could just beat you up, or lick the bosses arse until he sacks you otherwise. But when that job comes around- This song always plays. Nobody dares to interrupt me in my work, nobody wants to be the cunt who set production back by a week because they decided to mess with the weird guy. I never feel more like I'm doing the Omnissiah's work.

But a slow accumulating far spread belief in things like "machine spirits", "percussive maintenance" and "machine whisperers" works just as well, it just takes way longer. In other words, the mechanical workers listen to this, they get the confidence to do good work, their anxiety is soothed, the already real but hard to proof "machine spirits" feel appreciated, thus the procedures end up working more often than not. After getting into my first job where we manufacture PCBs, and nobody knows anything about the machines since they were provided by China with nooone instructing us on how to operate them (the best they provide is manual which was poorly translated into english, which isn't even our native language), I feel like everything we do is improvisation and decryption of these machines. During that, I calm myself with remembering this song, and knowing that learning more about it pleases the machine spirit.
