Confirmed! Thanks for the tips! I used the bubble float technique but after noticing the mullet feeding on the bottom close in, i snipped of the bubble float and put 3x ssg split shot instead and nailed one 2nd cast. 53cm beast 💪 cheers 🍻
Sent this to my boy. He once came on a big shoal of Greys out spinning a tidal stream near Newborough beach on Anglesey. He broke a Mepps up and rammed a piece of Tracker Bar between the two bare hooks and free-lined it, after an hour or so he took one about 5-6lb. I cleaned it and BBQed it after removing about a pound of sea lettuce from the gut...We used to be able to take Bass back then but my son still rates his Grey Mullet over charcoal as the tastiest of all, far less bony than the Red Mullet, too. Thanks again for this John.
Well done John. I fished a few times myself for mullet and managed to hook one but never landed it as it broke me off when it swam round a steel beam. Their not the easiest of fish to catch." So well done to you. Also keep up with those great video's. Even though iam a very experienced angler myself." Iam still picking up tips here and there even after 46 years of fishing. 👍
Matt Webster - That’s brilliant Matt, I’m glad the vid was useful for you. I keep telling folks “Every day is a school day”! I love learning new things. I mention in the vid about using a stronger hooklength as I have lost a few fish from them running under boat hulls or pontoons and breaking me off. They are a frustrating fish to target. A big trick I have found is feeding them until they are confident. 👍🏻🎣
Hi john great video my local marina is full of mullet, me and the Mrs have been talking about fishing it for a while now, guess we're gonna have to have a go at it this week, really hope we get one 🙏
@@TheFishLocker hi john I've seen the one where your fishing between the boats but to make it easier I've started your channel from the beginning so I get to see everything 👍👍
In Florida we sometimes use a sabiki rig with a swivel at the top small weight at the bottom for casting and chumming with chicken feed mixed with rolled oats.
Another top effort and a cracking reward in the end. They come about a mile up my local river in summer and in good numbers but I've not fished for them before (for the reasons you mention!). Maybe I'll give them a go this year, great work. Shame about the Howells.
dukeofmodena - They are a definite “effort vs reward” fish. I feel it’s a better catch if you really had to work for it. They’re great fun on light gear when you can hook them. And the Howells are a lovely pair. They just didn’t have much sympathy for a man shin deep in harbour mud trying to land a mullet.haha.
Very similar to a trout . in some respects quality catch indeedy . Jimmy Arnott a person whom was friends with my Grandad . He was a fisherman he said to once "If your able to see the fish they are able to see you" And when your approaching water to fish , walk lightly .. because the vibration travels through the water and the fish are able to sense it . At the time you don't wether to believe it or not when your 14 . As time passed I learned to believe it when looking in the burn the trout would see you and just scarper to a hole in the wall .
colintraveller - Mullet are an oddity. They can be anything from brazen to down right skittish. Some days they are on it. Others they won’t touch a bait.
In 30 years of fishing I've only ever landed one in France 🇫🇷 St malo marina and I had 10 misses and the one I hooked was when my mother called me and said it was Time to start boarding the boat as it was a Time killer at the end of a family holiday and I used a set up like the wagler rig similar to the one you've got and I had 3 tiny lead shot under a tiny float and 3 ft of 6 lb line, I knew the frustration that day as I must have missed atleast 10 takes cuz they are so nervous and fussy but I did finally hook and landed a 3 n half pounder it was great after years payed off
Great angling as always pal! Is summer the best time to catch mullet in the harbour? I've seen them lurking near the pontoons in my local aberystwyth about a month ago.
Robert Mortimore - The John Wilson was an 11-13ft originally. But as it suffered an accident it’s more like 10ft 6” 😳 The other is more like 9ft I think.
Raining persistently here in Kent, no better way to spend a few hours than catch up on some old Fishlocker videos. I'm going to "try" and catch my first mullet soon having been told of a good location. Have you ever tried maggots for mullet JL?
Hi John. Really enjoying your vids. My son in law has a rib berthed at Mylor and there’s some big mullet around the pontoons there. Just one question, why are you using 12lb hooklength with 6lb mainline ? Why not use 6lb straight through if the fish are finicky. Also if you have a break the 6lb will go first leaving the fish with your 12lb rig attached ! ....not a Criticism, just curious.
Graham Laverack - the thought behind the higher breaking strain hooklength is more for the abrasion resistance incase the fish dives past a boat hull or pontoon. The majority of snap offs I’ve had are in the first 2ft. I used 12 because it was what I had at home 10lb would have done just as well. 👍🏻🎣
- until this last year I have had my boat at mylor. And have enjoyed some cracking mullet fishing up there. There are some real pigs hiding around up there under the pontoons. 😉
co0ter1 - Haha. They can be fickle fish to catch. Sometimes they’re ravenous and others they won’t take anything offered. Great fun when you catch one though.
My uncle had a love/hate relationship with mullet, he told me they were the most infuriating fish in the world, but catch one and the hour after hour he spent by the water made up for it.
There fussy alright I use to just free line to catch them off a wooden bridge great spot for them its at the mount of an estuary haven't fished it in a while doh

- I've only eaten mullet once and it tasted a little muddy for me. A 6lb fish must have given him some serious fight!! Well done that man.
top video john. never fished had the chance to fish for them hope that change one day.
Ian Miller - Be sure to bring plenty of patience. 😉👍🏻🎣
They are frustrating buggers, well done John. The old saying if you can see them you won't catch them 🤣🤣🤣
- If it was easy, everyone would catch them. ;)

- Never heard of that before. We use sakis here but not like that.
Thanks ! Amazing lesson:)
- My pleasure bud.
VERY NICE !!! LIKE YOUR VID !!!
Y L 777 - Thankyou very much. 👍🏻🎣😁

great video
Thank you
Good fishing mate
- Thank you very much. We have another Mullet video on the channel with some underwater footage if you haven't seen it already?

Sounds like a great end to the holiday 😊

- I do find summer the best time. 😊
Was sitting in that same spot watching them today at lunchtime. Ile be back.
Barry C - Be sure to bring plenty of bread and plenty of patience. 😉 haha. Good luck. 👍🏻🎣
Just had a couple of littluns off Penryn Quay before the kids started jumping in.
Barry C - Any fish is better than no fish. 😉
Are Mullet known for taking a single or double piece of corn on a hook, like some freshwater fish will? Thanks. Great video.
No. Not really. They might, but it’s not a common bait for them.
Got one in the end well done...What length is your feeder rods please.....

if you put some washing up liquid in your bubble float it can be seen better at distance
richard edwards - I have some lumi yellow ones for distance stuff. For the mullet I want it clear though. 😉🎣
Loads of mullet in Newlyn harbour.
- There are aren't there. 😊
Hi mate, which and size was this for the mullet?
- I'm not sure what you are asking? Which and size?
The Fish Locker sorry mate, which brand hook and size hook?
Out of every fish I have ever targeted mullet have to be the hardest to catch 😂
- They can't half be frustrating can they. haha.
I'll second that!
If only they were as obliging as a shoal of hungry surface feeding carp
I have had them literally swimming round my ankles early morning in Southampton, no chance of getting one out.
co0ter1 - Haha. They can be fickle fish to catch. Sometimes they’re ravenous and others they won’t take anything offered. Great fun when you catch one though.
- Size 6-8 usually.
If anyone can catch these difficult buggers...my money's on you John :)
- Have you seen our other Mullet video? Some great underwater footage.
Falmouth Marina...
CARRINGTON GROUP - Maybe 😳
My uncle had a love/hate relationship with mullet, he told me they were the most infuriating fish in the world, but catch one and the hour after hour he spent by the water made up for it.

Toss some bread on top then freeline a small bit and you’ll catch a lot.
Do you not see me literally doing that in the video?
No can’t stand your voice so can’t watch you.
