Yes truly respect it, another tip from me is to use the pencil for lineart rather than a pen if you want a more anime look, the pen makes everything look too clean sometimes

@@yorurumi Yeah that's the thing. The artist is not wrong for referencing a reference, it's the viewers who have no clue about art thought that it's a bad thing. The creator of this vid is just saying that it's better to not post them cause people who don't know art will think that you're copying based on their own experience. I had a similar experience before and it made me anxious to use a reference to draw long while ago, so I also told people the same thing to prevent the same stuff happening to them that makes them discouraged in art. If the artist is not afraid of those comments, then they can choose to post whatever they want, it's a choice.
i love how referencing is being called "cheating", but tracing is ok because "it helps me practice and improve" (??????) like bffr in what universe? tracing will only make you better at tracing, not art, meanwhile referencing anatomy, objects, whatever is like a core thing in art, you can never know how a body part, muscles or a pose, or whatever actually looks like from memory, you can try but i'm 90% sure a part of it will look wonky, even if not drawing directly from a reference, it's still a good idea to look at it after just to like proof check it idk. If you're not actually tracing, and just using someones art as a reference, but they think you're tracing...that's really on them and their false assumptions.
That happens all the time. When you get good at referencing you'll just get called a tracer. Assuming a flamer finds you. People really like to bully when they find a way to make themselves feel 'justified'.
U ARE SO CORRECT W THE LAYERS !! i'm 5 months in to digital art and when i first started, i had way too many layers. like one for lineart, base color, shading, highlight, and every tinyy part of the drawing, and i could not keep track of them 😵 then i had the idea of not giving a f with lineart and merging all the layers together. it was magic! and very freeing :D drawing digitally now feels and looks like painting in oil and i love it so much
In ibis paint, there is this thing called folder where u can store layers per section (like for example for skin, another for hair) but I don't know how to use it, I'm still trying to figure it out.
This video gives me hope for the newest and future generation of artists. It's so nice seeing a young artist like yourself giving importance to the real essential things. Don't waste time, more isn't always better, be respectful of other artists, learn to observe and translate into your own lines instead of mindlessly replicating. Really, great advice.
Tracing can be quite useful if you try to understand how it's made instead of only tracing lines. What I mean by this is instead of blindly tracing lineart, try to find shapes, form and rhythm/gesture in a drawing. Try to figure out how it works, deconstruct it! I used to do this sometimes when I started studying art and it personally helped me. This is a great video btw!
Making a tracing of the thing your studying and then comparing the referenced and traced one can be quite the boon for spotting subtle errors as well. Long as they're noted down they can be used to further refine the general rules you're learning, or spotting things to correct in your work. And then of course trying to draw that from memory, keeping in mind the rules learned so it'd become long term memory.
tracing was key to my improvement. by that i mean, MINDFUL tracing, not just blindly tracing and posting it as your own. it is actually incredibly beneficial to trace the things you want to replicate and see in your own artwork, then proceed to draw it without tracing so you can very easily notice mistakes and inaccuracies within your own art. this is key, especially when you're a beginner or even in the intermediate stage.
also don't be scared to make mistakes :] it has been one of the worst issues i had for like last two years, but I'm finally getting out of it! it's part of learning a skill after all also amazing video, these tips are very good - some random artist

Lots of good points in this video. What I’m going to start doing (and what I’ll advise others to do as well) is to make a reference board of sorts. Eg. compile the types of hair drawings/coloring/shading you like from multiple artists and keep it in one place. You can do this for other aspects too, like lineart, eye coloring and skin shading etc. I feel like my progress is slow mostly because I don’t do enough style study. Gotta fix that. I’d love to know how OP studies from their fav artists. Also, you say use references and I 100% advocate for that, but how do artists make ….. nvm. I think I got it. It all comes down to using a bunch of different references and art style studies and compiling it into your work as you see it

I saw you from ig a week ago and now your suddenly posted a vid and showed up on my home screen. Its very helpful tho + extra point for humour. I also do my art layers and keeping it in a minimum (unless dramatic shadows sometimes it goes over my minimum lol)
i have a hard time simplifying refereces bc i feel like all the detail is important and i have a hard time prioritizing what to include, what i found that can help me is actually tracing over the reference to see the big shapes and then using what i traced as the reference to draw it myself

the thing i learnt is that practice doesnt make perfect if you arent practicing the rgiht way. I drew every day for 17 years, and practiced so often. Yet my friends who only drew once a month was way better. Drawing everyday just makes you better at drawing faster as now i can draw super fast. But if you are drawing everyday but not actually trying to change the way you draw like if you are blind to mistakes then you arent gonna improve. I never knew that i should flip the canvas, i never knew how to make my art look more 3d ect all i did was draw everyday. So the key thing to drawing is practicing the right way not just practicing

You kept saying to find a few artist that an art style you like, every time you said that I went to the start of the video and looked at the art you showed, I love your style and you really inspire me :)
thus is probs the best vid about art tips ive watched. its simple but elaborated & its digestable and understandable also using ur art journey as an example
one of the hardest things for me to accept in doing art was, strangely, that using references/tracing to learn was not cheating. when i actually started studying art more seriously, i realized that tracing to learn was actually extremely helpful. although, of course, as you said, artists should never post traced art if it isn't for the sole purpose of learning from reference pictures or other artists.
I'm personally starting the DrawABox course thingy which makes you draw 150 boxes in perspective (among other stuff). As someone who struggles a LOT with perspective and don't have good depth perception it's helping a little bit. So there's an extra tip, hopefully the coiling thing helps others, I needed a bit more practice than that to fully understand it. The biggest reason I don't improve is that I'm not finding any time to draw... doing 0 drawings a month can be a bit detrimental if you want to improve fast. I'm gonna have to get a sketchbook and write down your tips :p
I also started drawabox a few days ago, but I've been a tad bit lazy. It helped me realise how bad I am at making consistent lines(well, they're straight, direction is the problem) Whenever I do digital art, Ctrl +Z has been my best friend coz of wrong line placement. I highly recommend drawabox.
4:20 I'd recommend referencing AND tracing and then referencing again. This process is more exhaustive but you're technically drawing the subject around 3 times. One before trace, one to trace to understand subtle forms and wire together the processess in your brain in what they did to simplify, then draw beside the reference after the trace and see how you improved pre-trace. Same way people will trace over master studies, don't just do the lines, but trace consciously and throw a few wrapping lines to help you understand form, because as a beginner, the ultimate thing is form. Drawing requires you to think a lot so eventually, people stop thinking and start drawing intuitively which isn't good. You need to put thinkies into it
just note its okay to trace aslong as you wont use it as a piece of public content, u can trace or copy an artstyle to get a better understanding of it but obviously do this while keeping it to yourself as a practice piece.
wow an actually helpful video that keeps my attention and isn't 300 minutes long to be honest, i'm a self-taught artist, so tutorials never help me as i already know everything they say & understand colors and blah blah blah. at the same time if there's one specific thing i need to think about when it comes to art & want to learn something specific, my adhd kicks in and i literally can't tune into a video focusing on it whatsoever. this is a lifesaver, and so is your channel. this is super underrated in general & with an attention-grabbing video like this you're sure to grow fast! (loving the bocchi clips btw)

(DISCLAIMER: Anything I talk about here does NOT mean trace other artists artwork. You can trace them as a study BUT NEVER claim them as your own and never post them) I just want to put this out here but it's absolutely okay to trace images from real life. For example, let's say you have a hand pose in mind - there is nothing wrong with taking a photo of your own hand and tracing it. You're making art more enjoyable for you that way. Personally, I trace over 3D clip studio paint models. There is nothing wrong with it, PLENTY of artists do this. It makes art quick and fast and allows people to focus on coloring. Also tracing helps you improve your skills. Eventually, you trace the same thing over and over and you start to notice things about the anatomy. Before I started using the 3D models I would find a photo reference and trace the shapes of that photo and try to draw it on my own as a way of learning the anatomy and getting familiar with shapes. If you want to learn anatomy I highly recommend youtuber Marc Brunet as his anatomy tutorials are super helpful.

Lots of good points in this video. What I’m going to start doing (and what I’ll advise others to do as well) is to make a reference board of sorts. Eg. compile the types of hair drawings/coloring/shading you like from multiple artists and keep it in one place. You can do this for other aspects too, like lineart, eye coloring and skin shading etc. I feel like my progress is slow mostly because I don’t do enough style study. Gotta fix that. I’d love to know how OP studies from their fav artists. Also, you say use references and I 100% advocate for that, but how do artists make ….. nvm. I think I got it. It all comes down to using a bunch of different references and art style studies and compiling it into your work as you see it

I saw you from ig a week ago and now your suddenly posted a vid and showed up on my home screen. Its very helpful tho + extra point for humour. I also do my art layers and keeping it in a minimum (unless dramatic shadows sometimes it goes over my minimum lol)

i have a hard time simplifying refereces bc i feel like all the detail is important and i have a hard time prioritizing what to include, what i found that can help me is actually tracing over the reference to see the big shapes and then using what i traced as the reference to draw it myself

the thing i learnt is that practice doesnt make perfect if you arent practicing the rgiht way. I drew every day for 17 years, and practiced so often. Yet my friends who only drew once a month was way better. Drawing everyday just makes you better at drawing faster as now i can draw super fast. But if you are drawing everyday but not actually trying to change the way you draw like if you are blind to mistakes then you arent gonna improve. I never knew that i should flip the canvas, i never knew how to make my art look more 3d ect all i did was draw everyday. So the key thing to drawing is practicing the right way not just practicing

thus is probs the best vid about art tips ive watched. its simple but elaborated & its digestable and understandable also using ur art journey as an example
one of the hardest things for me to accept in doing art was, strangely, that using references/tracing to learn was not cheating. when i actually started studying art more seriously, i realized that tracing to learn was actually extremely helpful. although, of course, as you said, artists should never post traced art if it isn't for the sole purpose of learning from reference pictures or other artists.

I'm personally starting the DrawABox course thingy which makes you draw 150 boxes in perspective (among other stuff). As someone who struggles a LOT with perspective and don't have good depth perception it's helping a little bit. So there's an extra tip, hopefully the coiling thing helps others, I needed a bit more practice than that to fully understand it.
The biggest reason I don't improve is that I'm not finding any time to draw... doing 0 drawings a month can be a bit detrimental if you want to improve fast. I'm gonna have to get a sketchbook and write down your tips :p
I also started drawabox a few days ago, but I've been a tad bit lazy. It helped me realise how bad I am at making consistent lines(well, they're straight, direction is the problem) Whenever I do digital art, Ctrl +Z has been my best friend coz of wrong line placement. I highly recommend drawabox.

I'd recommend referencing AND tracing and then referencing again. This process is more exhaustive but you're technically drawing the subject around 3 times. One before trace, one to trace to understand subtle forms and wire together the processess in your brain in what they did to simplify, then draw beside the reference after the trace and see how you improved pre-trace.
Same way people will trace over master studies, don't just do the lines, but trace consciously and throw a few wrapping lines to help you understand form, because as a beginner, the ultimate thing is form.
Drawing requires you to think a lot so eventually, people stop thinking and start drawing intuitively which isn't good. You need to put thinkies into it

just note its okay to trace aslong as you wont use it as a piece of public content, u can trace or copy an artstyle to get a better understanding of it but obviously do this while keeping it to yourself as a practice piece.

to be honest, i'm a self-taught artist, so tutorials never help me as i already know everything they say & understand colors and blah blah blah. at the same time if there's one specific thing i need to think about when it comes to art & want to learn something specific, my adhd kicks in and i literally can't tune into a video focusing on it whatsoever. this is a lifesaver, and so is your channel. this is super underrated in general & with an attention-grabbing video like this you're sure to grow fast! I just want to put this out here but it's absolutely okay to trace images from real life. For example, let's say you have a hand pose in mind - there is nothing wrong with taking a photo of your own hand and tracing it. You're making art more enjoyable for you that way.
Personally, I trace over 3D clip studio paint models. There is nothing wrong with it, PLENTY of artists do this. It makes art quick and fast and allows people to focus on coloring. Also tracing helps you improve your skills. Eventually, you trace the same thing over and over and you start to notice things about the anatomy.
Before I started using the 3D models I would find a photo reference and trace the shapes of that photo and try to draw it on my own as a way of learning the anatomy and getting familiar with shapes. If you want to learn anatomy I highly recommend youtuber Marc Brunet as his anatomy tutorials are super helpful.
