    Wow, I bought a lightpad and a seaboard when I when they first came out… then didn’t make time for them… the I heard Roli went bankrupt … so really pleased to see so many people still using theses !!! I dug mine out and connected to my ipa pro and LOVING THE EXPRESSIVENESS …my only wish is I had bought more blocks while there were easily available….thanks for the demo. Such a great system demonstrated so well 🙏

    I am planning to buy the seaboard. I use logic and ableton. As i understand you have to have different settings for everything in the dashboard (for ableton, logic, for different instruments like equator,diva,swam instruments and so on). So i have to change those settings manually every time thru dashboard? If so i would be spending more time in the dashboard app than in my daw. Am i geting this right? Thx

    second - it really hard to make nice straight press and slide to have beautiful effects. it is really unpredictable and takes several attempts (

There's a black friday sale on the Roli website for all of the blocks and im interested in getting a seaboard block but the seaboard on sale is separate to the studio version and its a whole £100 off - is it worth getting the studio edition or is the difference not that worth it?

    Hey, Taetro, thanks for the review. One thing I don’t understand. How did you do it within Ableton Live? It’s not MPE-compatible.

    • @wyattasbury4535
      @wyattasbury4535 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Anton Chebykin The blocks themselves are compatible with ableton, there’s just a certain way you set it up, but they also have templates for it to go in ableton.
      You can play equator with Roli in Ableton as an MPE controller. And Cypher and Strobe.

    • @EnriquePage91
      @EnriquePage91 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to setup a (or multiple) track(s) that listen to each independent channel so that when you play the ROLI gear each channel is processed on your daw by the same “instrument”. So each track should “ideally” be a midi track of the same instrument. That’s the general idea to make MPE tracks on “NON-MPE” DAWs.

    • @mikabreto
      @mikabreto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wasn’t aware that Ableton Live had a specific NEED to be MPE-compatible. AFAIK, MPE compatibility is a function of a MIDI controller, not the DAW. MPE events are just MIDI events, so as long as the DAW can record incoming MIDI, it can handle MPE. Or am I mistaken?

    • @VAL-mo7bc
      @VAL-mo7bc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      if I got it right, then the hardware is exactly the same, they released the new studio software to combine the three synths coming with the blocks(player edition,not full) and gives you a new interface with software upgrades for better performance. if you already have ‘old’ roli gear, you can upgrade to the new software for free via their website.

    • @rewoundmusic2312

    • @mikabreto
      @mikabreto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      stéphane soler same question here. If I wanted to be cynical, I’d say the only difference is the letter M. It stands for More 💰 as in spend more. Why push a firmware update when you can just get your user base to spend more money to buy the “newest version”? I can’t imagine that the M version has any internal components that are different. I could be wrong (and more cynical).

    Great video! This is making me consider Blocks for the first time. One question: I noticed you plugged in the Seaboard Block via USB. Is there some reason you didn’t use Bluetooth? Does the Bluetooth work well? Latency?

    • @ollieroks
      @ollieroks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You Must be new. Bluetooth NEVER works well. Even if you turn everything off.

    • @bodhibeats8257
      @bodhibeats8257 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t have any Bluetooth MIDI devices, so I guess that makes me new. But MIDI over Bluetooth shouldn’t have the latency that audio over Bluetooth does. Are you just making a general, slightly dickish comment, or do you have experience with the Roli Blocks?

    • @jessebarker6264
      @jessebarker6264 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bluetooth works fine on the Mac in my experience but it isn't an option at all on Windows for Roli products. But really I always plug in via usb on both because why worry about battery and connection if you don't have to : )

    • @mikabreto
      @mikabreto 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a Korg nanokey Studio, which is a versatile little thing. I use it over Bluetooth with my iPad, and I plug USB into my Mac. I don’t notice any latency when using it with Bluetooth into my iPad. I don’t notice any latency between the Lightpad Block and the Noise app on my iPad. Maybe the Roli team needs some Bluetooth tutorials. I use a music app called apeMatrix on my iPad, and it has a MIDI monitor among other great features. Anyway, I tried using the Lightpad Block as a MIDI controller over Bluetooth. When I tested it, and viewed the monitor output, I noticed that it sends “Unknown message” and that between the four different screens, it sends MIDI messages on channels 2-16. And the mapping is rather odd. The 16 pad drum screen starts on channel 11 bottom left row, then moving across the bottom row to the right, 12, 14, 13. What? And what’s up with the unknown message it transmits? Roli needs to step up their game and release a MIDI setup utility. Korg has one for their controllers.

      Yeah, knobs are great for playing, if you have three hands!!! Unfortunately humans have only two of them and if they're on the keyboard you can't twist anything else. That's where Roli shines. Knobs are great for post-production or manipulation of recorded material, indeed.
