Thank you so much for this wonderful explanation! I received an Etsy pattern and I had never seen two thread numbers noted together with a + symbol ... so I turned to the internet and found this video which explained everything! I really appreciate it and I am looking forward to tackling my first blended thread pattern. Cheers!
As a professional writer, and single parent, I have always used embroidery as form of emptying my mind, and do mostly freehand, creative work using various materials. But these explanations about how materials work, and how to use them better has really been helpful and clear. Sometimes the narration is a bit fast, but all I do is change the Setting for Speed to .75. Thank you very much for your work.
That's great, I'm glad the videos help Marcia! And sorry about the speed of my speech, I do try to slow down but sometimes I forget. You should see me when I really get excited..... 🙂
Thank you for the helpful video. I just starting working on some of my first cross stitch pieces and plan to try to learn and use the pin method. Why is the loop method not recommended? I used it with a regular embrodiery strand thread and a metallic thread with beeswax as a thread consitioner and it worked well for me. If I did not use the beeswax it would bunch up or I had to move very slowly. With the beeswax though I could move the thread quickly and have no issues.
Hi Isabel! You can't use the loop method with two individual strands -- if you are stitching with two strands and you're not folding them in half, you can't actually do the loop method. The loop method can only be used if you're going to double a strand in half, if the ends are cut there's no loop to catch. Does that make sense? :)
Nice video! Very informative. I am pretty sure Heaven and Earth Designs does not use blending threads, but I have a chart for Disney Dreams (MCG Textiles) which uses this technique! It can be intimidating, so thank you for your video!
Hi Renee, thanks for your comment! I was sure I'd seen people talking about blending threads in HAED patterns, but other than one freebie I downloaded just to look at it, I've never done one. I just don't have the patience to do something that big, particularly as I spend all my time working on new designs myself and stitching samples. And you're very welcome, I hope you enjoy working on your pattern! :)
Hi Kie! You mean to start or finish? Just tie a knot to start, if you look up "quilter's knot" that's a simple way to create a knot. Knots are fine, you just have to be careful not to catch them with your needle tip, but if you're mostly doing say the loop method to start for colours that are two strands (of the same colour) and running your ends under to finish, then there won't be many knots unless your whole piece is worked with blended threads. 😊
Where can I find the kreinik blending threads. I have a project that requires many different ones and I cannot find online a good source. I am in the us. Thanks
Okay I only have black and white. This pattern calls for a black and a dark grey. It's a witch cat. The black is the hat and the dark grey is the outline of his eye and it meets up with the hat. Could I blend the black and white together for that? I only have loops and threads thread, so I have no conversion chart and am just using the most similar colors that I have for a pattern.
Great video however I am currently stitching some cockateils which are 3 strand blended thread. It's a pain. But I'm working it. But one of the colours is a 4 strand blended thread...(14 count aida.) This 4 threads is a back stitch that most of the time isn't meant to go through the holes provided according to the pattern but inbetween. And I have no idea how to work that one. It's like creating a pin stitch with 4 threads for the length of the back stitch. Grrrr.. yes I just growled. I do like the blended krenik you showed.
Yeah that's weird, sounds like the designer didn't do a test stitch of the pattern, four strands is so much for backstitch. You could always take out a couple of colours, it might look better than the 4 strands. 🙂
@@peacockandfig that was what I was thinking. This is the wire on the side of a bird swing. So use 2 strand. Would you then back stitch each square individually or do long stitches?
I'm doing a cross stitch that is 11ct which I believe means I use 3 strands. So when I'm mixing how do I know what to use? Do I use 2 strands of one and 1 of the other? How do I pick? I'd appreciate any help you could give
Hi Natalie! You'll just have to play and see what you like best. 11 count isn't used very often by designers. You can totally use it, it's just you'll have to decide which colour you want to use two of and which to use one of. Usually if a pattern indicates blended colours, it will tell you how many strands of each to use, and what the designer's recommended fabric thread count is. The recommendation is only used to determine how much floss you'll need of each colour and things like how many strands to use for various parts, other than that you can use whatever you like and make your own judgements. 🙂
Hi there! I'm not sure I understand what you mean -- I don't tie the thread to the needle at all, I just thread the two strands then have the tail hanging down. The only time I ever anchor the threads to the needle is if I'm using DMC Light Effects floss -- because it's a very finicky metallic anchoring it to the eye of the needle prevents it from fraying as badly as it passes through the fabric. 🙂
Yeah it does depend on the thread you use, and how you stitch with it (you can't stitch like you would with cotton floss). I find the Kreinik to be super easy to use, I just use a slightly larger needle to reduce friction through the fabric and it's all good. I find the DMC Light Effects thread needs a little thread lubricant to help it not get "fluffy" as you stitch with it, and it also helps to anchor that thread to the needle to reduce friction from it travelling along the needle eye. I've heard great things about Petite Treasures braid and how easy it is to use, I haven't used it yet though. :)
That works too, but depending on the piece sometimes your needle can end up catching knots, and either undo them or snag them so the tension of the piece gets out of whack. But if knots are working for you, go for it. 😁

Glad it was helpful, good luck with your pattern! 😊
Thank you for this 😍 this is really helpful specially for those cross stitchers like me who are still learning.
Glad it's helpful for you Jan! :)

Re: speed of video, this comment was meant to help other listeners, not to criticize. This is an excellent site!
Marcia Crosby Haha no worries! 😊♥️
Wonderful explanation, I watched a few others but still didn't understand, now I do!! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful Deb! 😊
Thanks for the explanation. Using a pattern with this technique for the first time as well as half stitches
Good luck! 🙂
Thank you! I look forward to trying this, and watching all your other videos. :)
Haha good luck with it Gia, and have fun! :)
초보들을 위해 바늘구멍에서 두 실이 어떻게 묶이는지 영상으로도 보여주면 좋을거 같아요 :)
There are plenty of videos, there's a whole playlist for beginners. Good luck, and happy stitching! 😊

Hi, can you teach me how to do a mix stitch? Pls. thank you
I've never even heard that term before, so no I can't sorry, I don't know what it is. 😊
Hey, nice Video! What pattern are you using for the Koi in die beginning? Ist's beautiful
Hi Manuela! That's the Spirit of the Sockeye pattern by Blaine Billman, I live on the west coast so that art style is very common here. I love it. :)
how do you knot it in the back though? that’s the one thing i can’t seem to figure out stupidly 😅

Try 123stitch.com, they usually carry a good range of Kreinik threads. 🙂
Thanks!!
You're very welcome Sara, happy stitching! :D

You could try, see what it looks like. 🙂

Peacock & Fig thanks the trouble is all the instructions are in Korean! I'll just have to wing it and see how it looks
Haha yep, see what looks best to you. 🙂
😭 I was hoping this video would answer my question, but no luck. I don’t want to tie the thread to the needle, I was hoping you had a way around it.

Peacock & Fig You don’t? How does it stay in place? I’m so confused. Thank you for replying, though
I worked with metallic thread for a mermaid cross stitch piece and i hated it so much.
Yeah it does depend on the thread you use, and how you stitch with it (you can't stitch like you would with cotton floss). I just do a small knot on the back…
That works too, but depending on the piece sometimes your needle can end up catching knots, and either undo them or snag them so the tension of the piece gets out of whack. But if knots are working for you, go for it. 😁
