You probably have a lot of photos. Everyone does these days. Now, what the heck do you do with them? How do you find... well... anything? The answer is if you watch and follow along, it's gonna look like this:
Follow these directions and when you're done you will have a folder for every year (or group of years) in your Photo Library. All of the events that took place in that year, will be broken down and organized into Albums. This process DOES require you to use a Mac because we are going to utilize the amazingly brilliant feature known as SMART ALBUMS.

What a great video! I spent the whole day following your technique on organizing my photos. One, worked great. Two, gives me some organization that I would not have without you. Three, got me playing with my new Mac and listening to my new Airpods so bonus. The one thing that I found from another video after doing this work is creating a smart album to find all pictures that have not been put into albums. I think if you add this to your video, you would have covered 99% of what's needed by most. This happened to me as I had many duplicates and ended up trying to delete most of them with a few that didn't quite make it.

In the past I've always organized my photos by year but with Catalina going to year, month, and day views I'm not sure I see the value of separate folders by year.

I followed your clear directions exactly and ran into a problem after selecting favorites when I chose command N and a new album was created but nothing was in it. • @-jowetts-1000
    @-jowetts-1000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Once again a great class. I do have one concern though and that is around organising similar events into an Album. For example, I’m a member of an MX5 Club and I have an Album which contains a Folder for each run. In this way, I can easily find all the runs relating to the MX5 Club without necessarily having to remember the year of that run. This works equally well when I want to keep all of my granddaughter’s drawings in one place and then have a folder for each year. Thus it is the event type that is important and the year or event title become secondary.
Now this organisation method doesn’t work with the principles that your tutorial outlines and in fact deleting all these Albums as a first step would loose all that gathered information. So is there a way of using the Smart Albums without necessarily referring to the year but to similar events? If there isn’t, then I’m going to suggest that such Album structures are kept whilst integrating others that could work well with just a year as the top level Smart Album.
    Cheers Ray

I have tried this organization process after watching an older version of your tutorial. I changed my mind on organization so deleted photos in the smart album then deleted the empty smart album. When I made the new smart album I ran into the problem in the "NOT ANY" line that you mentioned in this tutorial . Apple tech said that once a photo had previously been in an album my smart album technique would not work. Apple tech also said to upgrade to Big Sur to correct this problem. That leads me to this problem. I have also heard that many people have printer issues after upgrading to Big Sur so I am hesitant to up grade. Do you have any tutorials about how to avoid this problem of Big Sur not recognizing the printer? . Thanks...I did love this smart album organization technique using "is not in any" . Thanks

Thanks David. This tutorial helped me understand the Photos Mac Application and I could organized thousands of photos since 1983. Still having challenges with the duplication and several wrong photo dates and places but it's not a big deal any more.
    Thanks again.

I am so glad that I have found this as my Photos are a complete mess! I have a question though, in your video you stated that you were only in the first part of the year so you were going to work with the previous year. Do we need to do that as well? So, it is currently March of 2023, after making my 2023 folder, do I begin working with that folder or the 2022 folder? Last question, has Apple Photos changed much after the upgrades? I am currently running the most current IOS software on my iMac and wondered if anything in this video may not look the same in the current version of IOS for Photos. Thanks.
