The specific & controlled movement demostrated in this section strteches the back/abs/legs/arms/neck, in a curved manor. This is a combined movement of several body sections & like all pilates should be performed with great control in order to prevent injury
Bman, I am sure there are other different pilates movements that do what you are asking. But the movement in the time segment I quoted, are to stretch the body parts differently, & if done in a controlled manor, they help strengthen all the body parts used in this movement.

Mariatulum but couldn't a straight back also strengthen the hips and lower back?
