I’m Ryan, the guy in Dallas who asked the question, and I’m shocked and honored he posted this! I created a web serial called MYSTERY OF THE BAT-MAN, so Conroy’s portrayal is near and dear to my heart.

I remember when I met Kevin Conroy at the SDCC in 2017. We talked a little bit about Adam West, and I ALSO told him it was HIS voice I always heard in my head whenever I read those Batman comics, let him know that my friend said he was one of the BEST people to ever play Batman (even though he was never in front of the camera), and that I always thought he was the same age as Adam West (though he told me Adam West was already older than him when he 1st became Batman). It was also nice to see him 1 last time at the LA Comic-Con in December of 2021. Sad he died at such an early age:(

I remember this podcast. He revealed he went to Juilliard with Superman (Christopher Reeve), his roommate was Robin Williams, he had an alcoholic father which gave everyone hope who experiences that. He defined what acting is, which was incredible. It was one of the greatest episodes of podcast.
His career as being the guy everyone goes back to for Batman, it's self explanatory. I grew up on him, he was my Batman. I've never cared for Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Christian Bale , or Twilight. In (Episode aired September 15, 1992)
    • Season 1 Episode 10
"Nothing to Fear", was the episode that has stayed with me forever. Bruce runs into an old schoolmate of his father, it goes a little something like this:
"Your father and I went to school together. What respect Wayne Enterprises use to command, he'd be ashamed if he saw what you turned it into, billionaire playboy! Your father would be ashamed!" And with the fear toxin from Scare Crow on him, it manipulates him into believing it.
He sees himself as a failure. And he only the way he overcomes it, is the moment that stays with us forever. "I am not a failure. I am vengeance, I am the night, I am BATMAN!"
    -Kevin Conroy
He's not really gone, whenever a comic book gets read that involves Batman/Bruce Wayne, we hear Kevin Conroy. He belongs to the ages. His work with that character (of American mythology) lives forever. You will be missed sir, always, may you rest in peace. And thank you!

You know when a certain celebrity passes away and they’ve had this enormous impact on you personally, seeing the news kind of makes you feel this massive gasp and sick feeling in your stomach. Like all the air comes out of your lungs and your gut feels heavy. I’ve had this feeling multiple times before. The first thing being when Lemmy Kilmister passed away in 2015 because he appeared like a god to me with his music. Kevin Conroy with the animated series, Batman beyond, the Justice league, justice league unlimited, static shock, the Arkham series, and the animated movies. This guy was the definitive voice in my head when I even thought about the caped crusader, when I was reading the comics or reading the forum’s online, or even the watered down children’s books in the library when I was little. It was Kevin’s voice. I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I shed some tears when I read the news. And you wish as a fan that you could’ve done something, but after hearing his personal opinions on death and acceptance you can’t help but respect that and just want the dead to rest. But the impact that he had on the character basically made him into the definitive Batman that we all know and love, and for me now going on 22 years old it will be hard for me to believe in someone else playing that voice without wanting it just be a continuation, like Batman should grow with the times at this point because I don’t want to hear a replacement for Kevin Conroy, I want to hear a person to Don the cape and cowl like how Batman beyond was. Rest in peace Kevin you made my childhood

I knew Kevin would have something to say about this. Glad to hear about those fond memories, but also so sad to hear they had only talked just weeks ago before he passed. When Kevin told that story it felt like Stan Lee all over again. I remember the same thing happened with Stan, talking about getting together soon only for him to pass before they could.
I totally get what Kevin said about having that voice clip of Batman telling him he's doing good. I watched a tribute video for Kevin Conroy from a reviewer I'm subbed to and it included a cameo video a fan had that they sent to them of Kevin Conroy (likely some time during the pandemic) doing a little Batman voice for the recipient, but also going on to talk about his thoughts on Bruce/Batman as a character and giving a beautifully inspirational speech about togetherness and love. It made me cry, but it also helped me greatly in coping with his passing. Even in death, that man provided hope and comfort without knowing it. He was an absolute gift to this world.
All my condolences to the Conroy family, and all those whose lives he touched. You'll be dearly missed, Kevin Conroy. ❤

Oof. This is heavy. Kevin shares the exact same memory of Conroy's Batman that I have in being there for the debut of The Animated Series. I remember seeing an ad for the show a week or so before it dropped and it was the Man-bat episode and I just remember being blown AWAY with everything. That was in '92 and I was just twelve at the time. I'm 42 now and I don't usually get emotional, not that much anyway, at celebrities passing away. But Conroy. Ooh boy. Like Smith said: "He was SOOO awesome at his job that from then until now and forever he's always the voice I hear in my head when I read the comics." Both Bats and Bruce. And he'll forever be Batman. He embodies the character better than ANYONE. Even West or Keaton. Just like Hamill's Joker. They ARE/were those characters brought to life. And he'll forever be deeply missed. Thank you, Kevin Conroy for not just being Batman but for being the best Batman but my definitive Batman for over 30 years and beyond. RIP Kevin Conroy 😞😢😞

God. As Mr. Smith so eloquently said here, Kevin Conroy was...no, *_IS_* the definitive Batman for at the very least, a generation. But probably for far more than just one generation. And I'm sure that most people had/have the same experience as Kevin Smith and I did where not long after falling in love with BTAS, whether you watched it as it aired back in the day or you just started watching it for the first time two weeks ago: Conroy's voice becomes the Batman/Bruce Wayne voice you hear in your head as you read his dialogue in the books. So R.I.P. to one of the greatest, most iconic, and most memorable voiceover artists of all time.
But, on another note, can I just say: I fucking love you Kevin Smith. You are by far one of the most amazing and beautiful human beings I can imagine. Obviously I don't know you personally so I can't say from experience. But in today's day and age, with the sheer volume of content, how much of celebrities' lives are out there for us to see, it's not unrealistic to be able to make a fairly accurate judgement of their character and what they're like as normal human beings. And this video here is a perfect example of who Kevin Smith is. Even as someone who is already a gigantic comic book fan, he makes me want to step my game up even more. The pure passion and heart that he puts into everything he does, from the media that he is creating himself, to even just a little few minute thing where he's answering someone's question like this video. His personality never fails to shine through and it is quite clear that if more humans were like Kevin Smith, the world would be a happier, more caring And loving, more artistically and creatively beautiful...overall, just a much, much better place.
So, in summation (lol) R.I.P. to the great, Kevin Conroy, the god. And thank you Kevin Smith for all you do, and for you just being you. You, sir, are more than a national treasure. You're an intergalactic, nay interuniversal, nay interdimensional treasure.
    Okay. Diatribe complete.

growing up, I always loved how time would pass and Kevin Conroy always returned and reprised his role as batman in different animated movies and video games throughout the years. every time he came back, it was just as exciting as the next. He's been batman for so long that I can't imagine anyone else voicing batman. He's been batman for almost all my life and i was so used to his voice as batman. I got many batman figures, when I look at them i just picture Kevin's voice in my head. This sucks that he is gone, and i am really bummed, , you can tell that the role of batman was something he was really passionate about and he perfected being batman and Bruce Wayne. He put himself in Bruce Wayne using his regular voice and the character forever became like a part of him. When I saw what Kevin Conroy looked like I never would imagine batman's voice coming from him, but when he does the voice and you look at his mannerisms you completely forget and totally see the dark knight. I never wanted to live in a world where Kevin wouldn't be batman anymore. He was truly an extremely talented individual.

It's awesome he mentions the scene with Ace that makes him cry because I believe out of AAAAAALLLLLLL the scenes he did as Batman, THAT scene is by far the most powerful one he did as the character.

Kevin Conroy, his voice, his casting, his absolute god tier portrayal of a character directly and indirectly lead to some of the greatest stories ever told, stories that I and others will never forget, stories I feel are a part of me. They’re not factual, but they have truth in them. Losing in Kevin Conroy feels like I’ve been told that we have lost bad bad. It feels like I am living in Gotham, and the guy who’s been protecting Gotham is no longer around. It actually does feel like that. And Batman, contrary to belief, actually does have a power. He never, ever gives up. He gets his ass kicked a lot. He loses a lot. His ideas and beliefs are constantly challenged and constantly mocked. But he still fights on. In the Justice League episode “Wild Hearts” Joker takes advantage of a girl with psychic powers and he almost kills Batman. Batman doesn’t give up. Millions of people are saved. And later, the same telepath is dying because of her powers. Batman finds her and holds her hand so that she doesn’t have to die alone.
It was Kevin Conroy who brought that protector and guardian to life. I never got to meet him, sadly. But he’ll always live on for me in every one of his performances.
Kevin Conroy also plays an older Bruce Wayne in Batman Beyond, and he tells his successor, “It’s not Batman that makes you worthwhile, it’s the other way around. Never tell yourself otherwise.”
Kevin Conroy made a hero. Kevin Conroy was a hero.

This was extremely moving. I think I’m going to pop-on Arkham Knight, play it on the hardest difficulty and go out the way Batman was supposed to go out during the Knightfall Protocol. It seems fitting. Thank you for your story, he’s the voice I hear when I read Batman also 🖤

This show changed so many lives. It changed animated TV. Before BTAS, cartoons were your typical affair with the villain of the week and the purpose was to sell toys. BTAS gave these villains backstories and got across that not everyone is born evil but we are broken by tragedy, our circumstances and everyone is capable of having a bad day. A generation of children from different races, cultures and other backgrounds that watched this show are now grown with their own children and helping others in their communities as lawyers, doctors, firefighters, cops etc. Not because they could be Batman, but because of Batman’s ideal which is to help others.
Thank you for everything Mr. Conroy.

I sent them all to my brother while he was in the army training at fort Polk. it's the batman I get in my head when I think of batman . I was giddy when I found out Mark Hamel and Kevin were reprising thier roles in the arkhsm games.

Kevin Conroy is the voice of Batman in generations of heads now and forever. That scene you mentioned with Ace... ohh boy. I am just... a little part of him lives on, not just in memory, but active memory as the voice of a strong but kind man who dressed up as a bat to seek justice, whether it be personal justice or societal justice. So few people get to have that kind of an impact on generations of people. I have two kids 6 years old and when its time, he'll most likely be the voice of their Batman all their lives as well because I'll be whipping out Batman TAS for them.
Kevin's passing hit even the viewers hard, its Chris Reeve all over again. I can't imagine what its like for those of you that met or knew him. Rest In Peace Kevin.

Michael Keaton will always be my number 1 Batman. Those 2 Tim Burton movies made me a fan of Batman. When the animated series came and I saw that intro, with the same batmobil and the musical theme as the Tim Burton movies with the Elfman score... I felt like the animated series was like a spiritual successor to the Burton movies.

When I was a little kid, I made my dad get me Batman's utility belt. He did what he could, and he got me a belt with a Batman symbol as the buckle. Now the belt itself was toast, but I attached the buckle to a vegan leather belt. The belt buckle is so old, on the back it reads "Copyright 1975 National Periodical Publications." I'll wear it for Kevin Conroy.
